I'm a cross training master!!! :) Haha, I wish. But yesterday I went out and bought a suit and goggles and I went swimming today!  I was really nervous because I had no idea what I was doing. It was only my third trip to the gym, 1st to the pool, so I didn't know where to go, and what to do when I got there. So I just kind of watched the other girls to figure it out.

I ended up swimming about 20 laps, resting for 20-30 seconds between some of them, especially towards the end. I lost track though, so I was wondering how else people keep track of their swimming... do you just swim laps for a certain amount of time? I would like to know some way in which I could see improvement week to week that doesn't involve counting.

I don't have form of any sort yet, but my brother told me for the first few trips to just concentrate on my breathing and that will be more than enough to work on, then when I feel comfortable with that I can work on my stroke. I saw people watching me and wanted to yell out "Don't mind me, I'm just a runner!" Haha.

All in all I had a lot of fun! I could have gone longer but today was really just a trial day. I think I could use swimming as a low-impact workout the day after a long run, and maybe one other day a week.

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday. Time to watch my Baltimore Ravens!

Excellent swimming! Your brother is right. It is very important to get comfortable in the water first. Swimming is EXCELLENT!!! Great sport! Always know too that you can use a kick board and do laps that way. It keeps you moving when you need a break. I bet runners world has a conversion for it. the pool is either 25 or 50 meeters or yards.

Great job!!! :D

Does the pool have one of those big deck clocks?

Let's say it takes you a minute to swim a lap and you want to rest 30 sec. You leave when the second hand is on top and when you get back you rest until the second hand hits the bottom. When you get back rest and leave when the hands at the top and keep alternating between leaving at the top and at the bottom.

Then you're doing 50s (assuming your pool's 25 meters or yards) on a 1:30 interval.

After 30 minutes you've done 20 laps. And you didn't have to count. Just warm up before and cool down afterward.

As for improvement, see if your rest time stays consistent.

And if you get over your aversion to counting. Count how many strokes it takes you to get to the other side of the pool and strive to get your stroke count lower.

Excellent advice Mike!

I agree with Marion, great advice! I will definitely look for a clock next time I am there. If so, I will try that out. I tried counting today but I was trying not to breathe in water, drown, or swim into the other guys lane and kept losing track!

All of the swim clocks I have ever seen are really big and white with blue and red hands. Very visable :)
