My daughter needed a lift home from Park City, so I went up there after work to buy some shoes and wait for her.  In the interim, I bought some running shorts, and spent an hour running around the roads and trails in the vicinity of the Canyons resort.  It was much cooler than the valley, so it was nice.  I tried out the crocs, and they are very comfortable to run in.   The left one slipped partway off one time.  For about 5 minutes my left toes felt funny, but by the end, everything was normal.  I feel no after-effects this morning.  The crocs are baby blue and cost $5.  That's quite a savings from the normal shoe purchase price.

Also, I have completed my registration form for TOU.  I even wrote the check, but I haven't put it in the mail yet.  This weekend the price goes up $25.  I'm in...but still wobbling on the fence a little bit.  I looked at all the close marathons in the time frame, (Pocatello, Salmon, Layton) and TOU seems like the best choice.  My base is pretty good, but the long runs aren't there.  Other than Ragnar and one half marathon last month, I haven't "gone long" since March.  I guess I'll have to get up early Saturday and go for 17 or something.

Nice! TOU was on my calendar if I didn't get into St. George and I still kind of wish I was doing TOU. I love Cache Valley and this seems like an excellent marathon.

PLenty of weekends to get in the long runs! And your base is good and I think that matters more than you give it credit!

I would like to see the BABY BLUE crocs!

Kelli, I'll be sure to post a picture. I'm not concerned about completing the marathon, but performing. I'd love to move up to an earlier registration for Boston, i.e. sub 3:10. Either way, I'm excited to be in for a penny. I mailed off the registration today. I ran the last 14 miles with my sister last year, and am looking forward to doing the fun part this year.

You are strong and fast, I am sure you can do it. I really do believe that base can carry people a long way. I have decided there are two ways to train for a marathon: speed or endurance. I think they both yield good results. But what do I know?!?

We are out of Boston for another year since my husband does not have St George to get that BQ. He hit 3:17 in Salt Lake so I think St George will be there (and even in the faster range you are seeking), but not in time. BUMMER. But, I will not go back until he can come with me. He just needs to turn 40.

put it in the mail! in my opinion (kelli, cover your ears), TOU is easily the best choice from the options above. you have a few more good weeks ahead to get some solid training in.

if you are interested, i will be running 17 miles on saturday. 8 kilometers of those 17 miles will be in the form of a race known as the "half road half trail 8k" in city creek canyon. it should be really fun...

finally, the crocs. most excellent. definitely saves a lot of money.

Kelli, too bad the registration opens too early for Scott. His STG training must be going really well. When's his b-day? I hit 40 this fall...

Allie, that sounds good. What time are you starting? I'm putting together a truncated plan for this thing, and wonder your thoughts on 4 shorter runs plus a long each week vs. 3 longer runs plus a long. The weekly mileage goes 40, 44, 48 53, and 45 with long runs of 16, 19, 15, 21, 13 and the race. Any input?

From allie on Tue, Aug 09, 2011 at 23:40:42 from 24.10.191.18

kam - i would go with the 4 shorter runs + a long, as it will give you more consistency. consistency is #1! the mileage build-up looks great -- yourlong runs look very similar to what i am planning (17, 18, 15, 22, 10). i also like how you hit your peak mileage two weeks out -- shorter tapers are better, imo. i usually only do a 5 day taper.

about saturday - the 8k starts at 8am. i'll probably run about 3 miles beforehand, so the bulk of the miles will come after the race around 8:40 or so. probably 5 miles up city creek and 5 miles back down.

Sounds like you two have the world figured out! You are both smarter than the average runner,

Scott turns 40 in April of 2013, he has a ways to go. But I believe in a 3:10 or less for him in St George unless something goes terribly wrong. You just never know.

Good luck with your run this weekend. City Creek is great, love the shade!

From Kam on Fri, Aug 12, 2011 at 10:08:33 from 67.2.32.146

Kelli, Allie has the world figured. Too bad turning 40 won't do Scott any good; he'll just get back to his previous qualifying time of 3:15. We all lost 1 minute this year, and lose 5 more for 2013.

Allie, I'll be looking for the girl in Burt's most recent photoshop around 8:45 in city creek. Is the race staged from memory grove or by the gate?

From allie on Fri, Aug 12, 2011 at 11:30:58 from 161.38.218.168

kam - the map is a bit unclear as to where the race actually starts and ends, but it will definitely be near the gate, or close to the place where the road makes a "u". just so you are aware, i won't have my elephant with me. see you in the morning.
