Woke to the same bum leg and worried about running this 10K  but I told myself I could make myself do anything, especially for only 6.2 miles.  I warmed up for 3.05 miles at 8:27 pace, I think.  Removed the headgear and overlying shirt, gloves.  Lined up at start and almost had an anxiety attack seeing the four REALLY fit looking girls towing the line.  GEEZ.  I felt so wimpy and blubbery.  Well one of the toner looking ones I beat by 8 seconds passing her at 3 miles and then she almost tripped me at 3.3 miles, running on my heels.  Basically the start was scary-- HELLO 6:07 pace, NOT ME.  I think I even saw 6:00 for a few seconds and that was REAL time.  I did NOT want to do this because it is NOT good pacing so  I slowed and then I find that that sets me up for a slower second mile due to the early SURGE.  The second mile was towards the canyon on 800 north with a NICE HEADWIND.  I was mentally not in the game and was asking myself why do you have to run in all this pain?  Why?  SERIOUSLY?  Why not stop?  JUST STOP. Pulled my head out when we turned south, and the wind was to the side.  Ahhhh.  I just passed a muscular girl (found out later she is 25 years old).  She passes me back and I let her stay ahead for a bit longer then pass her and stay ahead of her for the rest of the race.  At just before mile 4 there was a cop car on the side of the road with the crosswalk just in front of it.  I wanted to cut off going around the car to the right because we have to turn left across the street.  I was worried about cutting the course short so I went around the car.  But apparently it would have helped me to be right on 6.2 miles and to get that sub-41.  At mile 4.5 we start passing walkers for the 5k and some I have to kindly tell them I am on their left as they were walking not noticing the 10kers.  I saw two guys out in front of me about 20-30 seconds ahead of me and I tried to gain on them but my leg hurt like the dickens and I couldn't kick it in.  I also felt I needed my gu that I totally forgot to take out of my car before the race.  Dang.  I did get water at two of the three stations.  It tasted great!!  I finally heard Troy with .1 to go, even through my music, so I picked it up the last turn having to DODGE around at least ten 5kers.  I saw the clock at 40:55 and I knew I was going to miss the sub 41 but oh well 41:02 is pretty close and with a 17 miler yesterday/bum leg I feel pretty good about it.  My leg is currently throbbing-- mostly my inner quad.  It has a good sized lump on it. That can't be good.  It is as if someone punched me in my leg and it swelled up but when you feel it you can feel the muscle is swollen.  It is stemming from my right hip and radiates to my heel and toes.  Burning, pulsating kind of intense pain.  The massage therapist said is was VERY tight.  So for me it is massage, massage, massage until Utah Valley Marathon : D.  I am sure hoping it can respond well to therapy.  Splits:  6:26, 6:46 (mental game into the wind),  6:35,  6:29, 6:31 (thinking I  so HAVE THIS so not sure why I couldn't turn it up the last mile.  It was a long stretch, slight incline, very slight, majorly MENTAL), 6:46 (how in the heck?  GOT GU?  NEW RIGHT LEG PLEASE!!),   .22 miles at 6:25 pace (hard to go fast passing runners and turning, I don't think I picked it up until the last .05 miles).  Good training run. Now time to heal.

Loved your report and congrats on the PR and outrunning a few young, fit-looking gals. You rock! I know EXACTLY how you feel, standing on a starting line with amazing looking girls and suddenly feeling very self-conscious of my not-so-fit looking self. Way to show then how its done! You are amazing! Shouldn't have run around that car lol then you could have gone under 41 for sure! Nice race!

Way to go speedy!

I'm in the massage, massage, massage mode until Utah Vally too. It's stressful when you don't feel confident your body can make it 26.2 miles. Good luck and see you there.

From Burt on Sat, May 28, 2011 at 16:30:08 from 206.19.214.144

I thought you were in the rub it out mode. Is that the same thing?

From julieesplin on Sat, May 28, 2011 at 16:34:46 from 75.169.177.203

Yes, same thing, massage, rub, dig, oh, and a little sleep is always good too.

Nice race! Good job keeping your head in the game. I am amazed at how well you work/suffer through all of your pains/injuries. Good luck at UVM.

I love your race report! That is just exactly how I felt today! What is up with that last mile, huh? Great job today! So close to sub 41.

Good race today, I loved reading the race report!

From JulieC on Sat, May 28, 2011 at 22:59:17 from 71.35.249.72

I forgot to mention---My daughters both placed first and second in the kids k (about .8 miles)-- Amber was first (8 years old) and Brooke (10) was second. Amber was right behind the first boy (Lily's son) the first lap. She ended up getting passed by two other boys but WOW she was a little speedstar!! Brooke (she doesn't like to run) was trooper to hang in there with her competitive younger sister.

Oh and soon after I wrote the above we all went to Raging Waters in Salt Lake for a pretty much pick of our slides for three hours (it was not even 70 degrees). The sun came out a few times. We are a crazy family!!

So good to see you today! You did great!

If you need a good massage therapist, I know one in Orem and he is so good. No lie.

Great job on the race, I feel for you having to deal with a bum leg and trying to run fast. IT STINKS! Now you just need to run easy and get some good massages and you will do great in the marathon. You are a strong lady!

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 29, 2011 at 13:08:49 from 67.2.101.26

You have the mental toughness of ... well ... the only word that comes to mind is JULIE!!! Seriously, I am in awe of how you are able to control the situation.

Congrats on a fine race!!!

Heal leg, heal!!! (Because Julie is going to bring it in 2 weeks whether you do or not ... so it's in everyone's best interest if you just stinkin' behave!!!) :) :) :)

From RAD on Mon, May 30, 2011 at 12:14:25 from 98.202.17.113

Wow Julie - wow! You are an amazing woman! What a great race and way to kick the young'uns bums! :) Only missing your goal by 2 seconds with a bum leg and all the weaving you had to do is incredible. awesome job!

Take care of that leg. If it is burning all the way down do you think it could be the fascia? Ask the massage therapist if they know and fascial releases. When mine did some for me it was heaven - afterward, had to endure the other place during it - and made a huge difference! When they are releasing it, you feel that same burning sensation along the length of the fascia. Anyway, just a suggestion. See you at UVM - hopefully!

From JulieC on Mon, May 30, 2011 at 13:16:25 from 67.41.189.12

I think you are right Rad. Today I ran another 10k for fun and MAN is it burning all the way down, mostly deep in the right calf to achilles and front and back of the pififormis. Honestly (this will sound weird, maybe just to guys) but I think it is INTENSE ovulatory pain. Because if I press on where my appendix area is and release I have significant rebound pain. I have had this before and it usually last 3 to 4 days. Not sure if they are just happening at the same time to make it feel even that more intense--ovulatory and piriformis syndrome. Burn BABY burn!! So I will definitely get the fascia release done this Thursday at my massage appointment. The problem is it really messes with my stride and then I turn my foot inward and then the achilles becomes involved along with the calf. The funny thing is I usually have this problem on the left side. Rarely the right. Thanks for advice Friend!! btw I felt amazing in todays race despite the bum leg. I am so ready to be at the starting line of UVM!! : DDDDDD
