Ran  just over a mile (9:20 pace) to Kim's house and met the speedy threesome-Kim, Mel and Jane.  I love punishment : D.    Their warm up pace is my MP pace.  So sad.  I stayed with them.  They were warming up to "race" a 5K per Melanie's schedule.  Their goal was 6:15 AP.  I am choking right now.  I told them since I am close to home and can see (we left at 6:10 am) I didn't mind if they left me.  We ran a 2.25 mile warm up -added to my earlier warmup-  my AP was 8:06 for 3.72 miles (splits: 9:20, 7:57, 7:22  this is a warm up?, .72 in 7:36).  We ran the IHC American Fork Hospital 5K route.  I haven't run in it for three years and its this Saturday.  I always seem to have to work that weekend and I do this year.  There are no mile markers up but I know the course and its very simple--a square route--first mile a gradual uphill not very steep, mile two a brief steeper hill then uphill for a bit, mile three rolling downhill  to flat to the finish.  Since I am out of shape I wasn't sure what I would run it in.  I ran my 5K(3.1) in 21:16.  The others stopped before reaching a true 5K (3.06) so I guess I can subtract 16 seconds to be even with them. Got to take some when I can.   : D So 21:00 even.    That's my pace minus how long it took me to run .04 miles longer.  The others came in at 19:15 and 19:30. A 6:15 and 6:22 pace.  Their first mile was a 5:50!!!!  Mine was a 6:34.   Second mile I gave up.  I was all alone and it was uphill and moonshadowed.  It was a slow 7:12.  Last mile 6:51.  AP =  6:51.  It felt controlled but seriously this pace for 26.2 miles!!????  NO way.  Not ever in my mind.  And that's what they are going to do SGM in.  I got to get my energy level up and get healed again.  My muscle aches have WAY improved since taking vitamin D and B12.  I think I may be on the road to recovery.  Cooldown-- to make 10 miles even.  Splits:  7:47, 7:58, 7:43, 7:30.      AFTER MY RUN:  I had a "date" with my neighbor (VTee) to show her the new bike trail and ride with her for a few miles.  She has never road her bike longer then a couple of miles except in spin class.  We are both over 40.  She is very tall and lean.  Beautiful.  It was such a gorgeous bike run with fall in the air.  We just did a leisurely pace up thru Art Dye park and passed Lone Peak HS and thru the Golf Course.  Some steep inclines and she was such a trooper.  Such a lovely time to take it easy and talk.  We ran into my friend Amber (Sandberg) from my Ragnar Team.  She is in awesome shape.  She is the one I tried to stay with at Hobble Creek.  We talked for a bit then continued on our trek. Bike miles:  11.3.   What a good day so far  :  D.

Nice 5k, , , they are always soooo tough for me!

How ironic, a few minutes ago I was looking online at the course map for that American Fork 5k this weekend, since I will be up north and need 3 fast miles, , , ,maybe I will run it? So it's uphill for the first 2 miles? That doesn't sound oh so fun to me, but I do need a good push. There wasn't an elevation map, just the square loop showing the streets. . . . what's your suggestion since u ran it this morning? Should I: 1. sleep in, save $, and go to the track or 2. run the 5k and go for a great time to build confidence and leg power???

Amber-- It isn't uphill as much as it sounds. IT's gradual until about 1.2 miles where there is a teenzy uphill and still gradual then down. Very good honest course. We were running it in the dark/moonlight so perception is different. You will think "is this a hill?" for sure. NOTHING TO VEYO. Now I can't believe you may run it as I will be working right there in the hospital. But personally save the money and run it on your own at 6:45 am (I think it starts at 9am). I will be glad to cheer you on from the start then come back down stairs to see you finish strong : D. There usually is not much competition, a fast guy or two. I won it one year about 9 years ago in 21:33. Glad I am faster this year. Too bad Mel and Kim didn't know you would be here. They are running 13 miles this Saturday.

i know i am barging in on this conversation, but i think you should do the 5k, amber. a good 5k time is a great confidence builder heading into the marathon...at least it is for me anyway.

of course, do whatever you feel best about...but if you do decide to run it, let me know. maybe i will come to AF and say hi.

julie - great run today. feeling ready for SGM? you are looking strong. also, i still have your crocs for you!

btw I am NOT in shape...just hangin' on but seem to be on the mend with the extra iron, vit D and b. my turnaround is a little late but I am gonna put up a big fight. Oh yah I wrote my nightmare marathon on Amber's blog, I was wearing pseudocrocs without a back to them. Thanks for holding on to those. If you happen to come down for the 5 k I will be working there on mom/baby. I am going to come cheer amber if she runs.

Interesting that we had a similar workout (although i take the term "warming up" very seriously!!!!) Those chicks are FAST!!!!! Crud. And to think that you ran as fast as you did with all of your crap going on. I am very impressed. You are truly amazing.

After this marathon (which I really believe will go much better than you think), you need to take some serious recovery time! You will be right back with your friends and hitting amazingly fast speeds right alongside them.

Just an off day, Julie. You have run a half marathon at faster than that pace--and your time to run a marathon at that pace will come! Heal up and you will be ready and confident for the next marathon(although I don't think this one will be so bad at all),

Kelly, its a good thing I ran a loner mile+ to Kim's house beforehand. Their first mile was a 7:40. They always seem to be in a race when they run now. What happened to the good ol' days? I do better when I warm up at 9s. Time will tell...maybe when they are 41!! That's what I tell myself but doubtful they will probably be even faster. what to do a SGM...I want to start slow, not break out into a 7:30 pace.

April-- my fast warmup most likely caused my downfall. I really need to do 9s for at least 3 miles not a close to race pace mile warm up at 7:22. I know...I am such a wimp these days.

I am only 31 and I can't crank out a low 7's mile for a warm-up without running into trouble. I do much much better with a few slow warm up miles before dropping the hammer. If I start too fast it usually dooms the rest of my run! My strategy for this upcoming marathon is similar to yours--start easy and go from there and see what happens--I'm definitely not going to go flying out the gate. My training has been too so-so.

I agree with the starting out slower. Our running group always does at least 3 miles (sometimes 4) and we average low 9's most of the time. It makes hitting the fast miles easier.

I do have problems going out too fast in races, that is why I choose to start in the back, it keeps me slower for a while whether I want it or not. Aside from messing with my placing at TOU, it has never been a problem!

Julie and Allie - thanks for your 5k advice, and I wimped out and did my own thing on the BYU track. I'm sure I would have pushed harder on a race, but ya know, it was all I could do! THanks for the comments though, and Julie you live right there? oh man, it would have been fun to see your stompin grounds!!!
