Met Kim at 6:35 am.  Ran slowly up to the mouth of AF canyon, mentally preparing myself for 8 MP miles which will always end up faster than that when I am with speedy energizer fueled by no entry to SGM aggression runner Kim.  In fact poor Kim had to conform to my slowness as we headed out.  She ran a mile to my house first.  She wanted more miles.  I also stopped at the Fire Station to take a gu and a drink of water at the park bathrooms there.  Still feeling sluggish as we crested the hill but it was all mental for the plan ahead.  Ran 8 miles.  5 were rolling downhill on the Cedar Hills Pathway, with some on dirt terrain (about .4 miles) and  the rest on roads going up hill.  We stayed on the path at the Cedar Hills Golf course after surging down the hill before AF canyon ( the one I usually am climbing).  That was a nice start and then rolling downhill descent.  The rolling hills is what I wanted as it simulates quite closely the last 8 miles of Ogden.  Ending with three uphill miles the last being the greatest ascent, all uphill to my house.  Splits quite under MP of course.  Hope that makes next week seem real easy when I run my own race.  Here they are:  6:40, 7:02, 6:49, 6:51, 6:56, 7:04, 7:04, 7:13 too much uphill and All mental for me.  At least I didn't completely fall apart.  The first four miles were quite the hoot: 8:55, 9:19, 9:27, 9:28.  Total unmotivated pace and all straight uphill, the direct route to the start of the 8 miler.

Who knows, maybe that IS your marathon pace! You got a pr coming for sure! You must be feeling better?

April, I will try my hardest to PR but it might be difficult as this course is much more difficult than St. George. And yes I feel a bit better, the tightness let up yesterday after a bike ride. Weird, but the sciatic pain comes on with a vengance at times especially deep in the adductor muscle and lower left back. I try to breath thru it. I try not to be down to long. Like Top Gun I got to get out there or I will struggle. The really slow start today helped things even more. I even wore my new shoes. I wore them to work once this week to teach them a lesson in conformity : D. Its working. My oldies are running out of tread drastically and barely have any cushioning so I need to make the change. Kim and I also soaked in the American Fork River up in the mountains, talk about ICE COLD, we were numb in seconds but we stayed in for 5 minutes frozen solid. It was comical. Kim hates the cold. She braved it well and felt great afterwards.

Sounds like a GREAT canyon run. I used to run up and back down AF Canyon. Timpanogos Cave visitor center was my water stop. Haven't run there the last couple years. I got scared of the traffic and narrow shoulders. Great simulator run for Ogden! You are gonna rock Ogden. Glad you got new shoes, hopefully they work well for you!

Hi Smooth. This wasn't a canyon run actually. We ran from my house to the mouth of the canyon at the golf course tip so we didn't have to worry about getting hit or dodge traffic. Going up further in the canyon is too steep to simulate Ogden. The run I ran I compared on course tool is exactly like the last eight miles of Ogden (500ft drop over 8 miles). So hopefully I am prepared mentally at mile 18 to "fly" ha ha ha ha. That was a joke : D
