AM- Ran Run Downtown 5k today, breaking my PR by over 20 seconds and taking 5th overall at a very competitive race.  One of the best 5k's of my life.  Good day.  Full race report on my green shorts blog. Race results here.

I have such an ultra-mindset that I don't even put any non-trail ultras on my race schedule (shown at left).  I wonder if that's a bad thing.

Jon, that's FAST! Well done man!!

Congrats on a really nice PR

As a person who coaches primarily 5k runners, this makes me question everything I think I know.

Congratulations!

Great race report. Congrats on the huge pr. Imagine what you would have run if you hadn't done 18 yesterday and your knee was ok. Then, imagine if you were to do some speed work... You showed the young guns what's what:-)

Thanks, guys.

Rob, I wouldn't suggest ultras and high mileage for high school runners, though. 16 year olds aren't built the same as us old guys.

Bam- yeah, I could definitely do faster still. But it's just not worth it for me given my race priorities and limited time/energy. So my 5k's will have to be off my 100 mile training :)

Dang Jon, turn on the jets!

From Jason D on Sat, Jan 19, 2013 at 13:12:53 from 24.1.80.94

You should try to hurt yourself more often, Jon. Nicely done. A huge PR in the 16-minute range is a very fine improvement. It shows, as you have said, that high mileage and workouts like 10 mile Tinmans go a long way (you had mentioned your last PR was off similar training).

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Jan 19, 2013 at 13:17:32 from 24.10.249.165

I looked back over your 5k times from four and five years ago. You are way faster now.

From Jon on Sat, Jan 19, 2013 at 13:31:53 from 107.203.52.135

Rob- actually, that observation is probably skewed by Striders 5k. Don't know if you've done that one, but it's brutally, hands-on-knees steep uphill for the first 1.5 miles. My only reasonable 5k was a 16:35 at a 4th of July race in 2009. But yes, I'm faster now, for whatever reason.

Ultra mindset/16:01 5K.

Truly an amazing combination. Nice running!!!

From Dale on Sun, Jan 20, 2013 at 11:26:46 from 69.10.215.11

Next time, go out and catch a toe and fall hard a couple of times in the week before your 5Ks. Evidently, that's a valid pre-race taper strategy.

Nice race.

Screaming fast 5k, congrats. Amazing how you seem to keep improving in the short stuff.
