5 easy miles this morning.  I had a run-in with a skunk- I was crossing a narrow footbridge when I saw something dark coming towards me.  It got within about 15-20 feet- close enough that I could see its white stripe even though it was 4:30 am and there were no lights nearby and no moon.  I quickly retreated backwards.  He followed.  I retreated.  He followed.  By this point I was in a big field, but he kept coming right towards me.  I eventually swung a very wide loop around him and continued on my way, but kept freaking myself out the rest of the run- every stick became a snake, every rock became, well, something not rock-ish.  Needless to say, my heart got a better workout than my legs.  My knee was rather painful, though, so I cut my run 1 mile short so I would have time to ice it before leaving for work.

Jon,

I changed my name(on this site) to 1946. This should avoid confusion.

Happpy miles!

Does your knee hurt worse when you straighten it out? Maybe try an ice bath, and I'm sure your already taking something for the inflammation.

That was a very eventful run, and I'm glad you didn't get sprayed.

i am even more happy that you didn't get sprayed..i would have to smell it for a while.

From Jon on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 15:03:26

I do lots of ice packs but no inflammation drugs- I'm not a fan of drugs- I prefer to know how bad my knee hurts than mask the pain, except during races.

Hey Jon,

It looks like I'm going to be up at Bear Lake the weekend of 6/14. It's probably not terribly convenient, but maybe we could meet in Logan Canyon someplace to run. Let me know.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 16:42:37

Marcie - the smell lasts only a day, at least it did for me last year.

From Jon on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 17:06:34

Chad- I would be up for a Saturday run and could meet you pretty much anywhere. Do you have a location or do you want me to give you options? The only problem may be that my wife is due Jun 11. We are planning to induce by then, but if we can't and the baby comes late (i.e. June 13), I don't know if I will make it. But we can plan on it now and I will let you know for sure as the date approaches.

Sasha- you better tell the skunk spray story- how you got sprayed, what you did, and why your wife ever let you in the house again.

Good luck on the newborn Jon that's pretty exciting for the due date to be so close.

From Chad on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 18:12:31

Jon--I forgot about how close you guys are to the the new arrival. That's really exciting for you guys. With that in mind, we should just play it by ear. If you've got a newborn, you may not want to run as much as you think you do now. If birth is still pending, you probably want to stay close to home. If it works out though, please feel free to make suggestions. I usually run on the road around the lake. I would be up for whatever doesn't require too long of a drive. (Our place is at the south end of Garden City).

From Jon on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 19:01:23

Chad- I'll be taking some time off, so my wife won't mind me going on runs. In fact, I plan to run more in the week after delivery than before. Pretty much the only way I wouldn't be up for a good Saturday run would be if we delivered Friday or if there were some big complications.

As for location- last year Paul showed me a nice run that starts right by Beaver Mtn ski resort- maybe 15 minutes from Garden City. We could go there if it isn't too far for you.

From Chad on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 19:28:04

A Beaver Mountain run would be great. That's not a long drive at all. Send me a private message with your phone # and we'll make it happen cap'n. If Cody is available, let's bring him along!
