AM - 6 miles.

PM - 6 miles.

Felt good today - loose(r) and a more flowy stride. Nice progress. That being said, I decided to end the racing season (other than a turkey trot w/ my family) and skip the big ones still on the schedule - RnR Vegas 1/2 and Cal International Marathon.

The potential outcomes of another short block of training and races are...

-Run fast, come out unscathed [nearly impossible]
-Run fast, prolong / worsen hamstring injury [somewhat possible]
-Run slow, come out unscathed [possible]
-Run slow, prolong / worsen hamstring injury [probable]

I don't feel good about those odds. I'm going to have the chance to run some great races this upcoming winter/spring, but I need to fix my hamstring so I can fully capitalize on those opportunities. I'll work on rehabbing and just stick to easy running for another month or two, then start the long ramp-up to a spring marathon once I feel balanced and uncompromised. When talking about my top choice for a spring marathon last week, a good friend and supporter ended a message with "Get yourself ready!"... simple advice... and squeezing out another marathon isn't the way to do that.

Hey, did you see the press release from marathonguide.com for Houston?

Yeah, they have a very nice program. I've definitely thought about Houston, but I feel like it's still jumping the gun and just moving to the next possible target, instead of the *best* possible target. I want to give myself 4-5 months and actually do it the right way, especially in the winter when weather can be unpredictable and you need to be very flexible. I'm thinking some shorter checkpoint races - USA XC, USA 15K, then late April marathon.

Great plan. This window of "getting healthy and prepared for the next step" really encompasses a mental break that a lot of competitive runners can neglect where there is no stress to running.

Very true. Training during the winter especially uses up more mental energy, so a long chunk of easy running running is good - ideally you are totally refreshed and stress-free when the "real" buildup starts.

Good analysis and wise decision in my opinion Jake. Your desire to race and improve is only slightly outweighed by your repeatedly demonstrated measured approach to your training. Enjoy some easy running for the winter.

This way you can also capitalize on Ski season.:) Wise choice Jake!

Well... the best part of ski season is usually March/April, when the training ramps up too (I'll gladly find a way to balance all two of my passions)... but let's hope January and February are FINALLY awesome ski months again this year.

I think I have a good situation at work where I can come in a little later and do long runs on Friday mornings this winter... so if the snow is good - weekends can be dedicated to skiing :-)

Wise plan!
