AM - 4.4 miles horsepark loop, then walked for a bit w/ Andrea. PT before and after. Since Andrea knows more about back/hamstring issues than anyone with a degree in medicine, I've hired her as my rehab coach... since she doesn't have any responsibilities as taper patrol for a while. The plan for next couple weeks is lots of stretching / massage / e-stim / etc. Jogging is allowed on a minimal scale (no doubles, keep the runs ~30 minutes this week), and we'll do a bit of cross training* too.

The absolute earliest I would run another marathon is March, and that is sooooo far away. There really isn't much point in trying to "maintain" right now... its OK to get a bit out of shape at this point. I've already been thinking a lot about how I'm going to approach the next training cycle... in fact I'm excited to get going already! Just gotta wait until Thanksgiving or so. Hopefully by that point I'll be able to run faster paces with no fear of re-tweaking the hamstring. I think if I stick to the plan, that won't be a problem. The last thing I want to do is be pressing through any structural discomfort... there's no fun in that for me.

* = Sorry Rachelle, that doesn't mean crossfit :-) Or yoga, Kevin. Although its very tempting to follow Allie's new training plan for a couple months. With 2+ feet of snow in the forecast this week, maybe we'll be skiing soon!

Hopefully we get a lot of frequent powder this year. Get well soon Jake.

Lots of powder would be very nice! I'm hoping for a '10-11 winter all over again!

I am feeling a lot better, pretty much back to normal. I could run 15-20 today if I needed to. So I'm taking the gamble that showing (potentially excessive) restraint will pay off in the long term, even if that means missing a few things in the short term.

Sounds like a solid plan. But, just something to consider - why not wait until Fall next year to do a marathon? You could do some damage to your 5k and 10k times in the spring and then drop out a 64 half. Imagine going into marathon training with some quality times that reflect your ability. I think you'd run somwhere in the 2:15 region - no bother.

So how's the weight?:)

Sounds like a great plan Jake. But I still think crossfit would aid the recovery. :-)

whatever. i hate editing.

Bam - earliest =/= definite. There's a new marathon near where my parents live that I'm looking into... and last year the SLC Marathon had a ridiculous prize purse. So those would be potential options... BUT I'm not making any decisions until the Oly Trials standards / qualifying window are announced, because if they open it up next year, I will wait until the fall.

My weight is creeping up towards clydesdale status, I presume. I'm not weighing myself for a couple weeks! :-)

Jake, don't ever let your weight get as high as mine. Lol. You'd feel crappy and you wouldn't be able to move very quickly.

good plan. you deserve a bit of a break. gotta warn you I am going to catch you on the mileage board for the year now though. 320 miles a week starting tomorrow.
