OktoberFAST 5K!

Awesome morning... our little track event turned out to be a great time. We ended up having 9 runners, several volunteers, and a handful of awesome spectators!

My race recap... I thought I'd be able to crack 15 flat, but it turns out that is a more difficult task than it seems! My kilometer splits were 3:00.1, 2:59.8, 3:02.2, 3:03.4, and 3:03.9. Total time was 15:09.5. For another solo effort, I'm not exactly thrilled with the time, but I have to be happy with it. Its 13 seconds faster than my time trial about 5 weeks ago, and in reality its the fastest 5K I've ever run (Draper Days was probably short this year, and the Fight for Air doesn't count b/c it was aided). I fell off the pace in the last mile and didn't really muster any type of kick. But, in the past week I've time trialed 5K and 10K PRs. I'm looking forward to the half marathon next weekend... I think I'm ready to really pop a good one... hopefully an honest PR on a fair course. [~9.5 miles w/ warmup & cooldown]

Here's the results:

Jake 15:09.5
Adam C 17:07.3
Andrea 17:16.3
Adam W 17:40.7
Chad 18:17.4
Dave 18:31.1
Sandy 19:01.9
Kam 20:09.1
Ashley 20:32.6

Allie did an excellent job taking photos. I've put all of her pictures on my picasa site: OktoberFAST 5K

Paul and his kids came out to spectate, as did Adam W's family, and Kam's son (who helped me with the timing... thanks!).

Afterwards we had some chocolate milk and then ran a couple laps around Sugarhouse to cooldown.

We are definitely going to do this again - October 29th - Spooky Fast 5K. Mark your calendars! (It was originally the Boo Fast 5K, but Andrea decided to change the name, and I don't argue with her! :-) Sorry Adam!)

Thanks to everyone who came out this morning. You all ran great, and that was a lot of fun!

17:16?!?! I am really impressed by another big PR for Andrea. That's sub 17 at sea level!

Check the Picaca link for more actions shots... there are pics of everyone.  Saucony was awesome to hook us up with some race bibs, stickers, and some token prizes, so that was really nice of them.

PM - 3 miles shakeout. Legs feel really good.

did you enjoy all those dud photos?

that was a great event you guys put on this morning. good turnout for the first one and i'm sure participation will grow with future races. nice job on your race -- i'm sure it was hard to do that solo but you still ran an incredible time.

Nice work Jake I think you and Andrea have set great example of what work and dedication can really do:)

You two did a great job with this. Thank you so much. That is a great collection of pics as well. I'm looking forward to 2.0 or maybe a BOO Fast 5K? Sorry you missed your mark but you also didn't mention that it was pretty hot for 9am in Oct I'm sure that played into is a little as well.

Smokin’ fast time, especially for running it solo. Great job!

How fun. I wish I could have been there. To watch!

From Bonnie on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 20:33:14 from 150.135.114.237

Congratulations Jake, what an awesome idea and your fitness is really moving along!

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 20:34:29 from 67.177.21.60

Thanks guys. We've been talking about it this afternoon, and looked at our training schedule from now until Philly... a 5K on Halloween weekend seems like it will fit in perfectly... so its a go for October 29th... same place, same time, same fast 5Ks!

From Adam RW on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 21:58:40 from 67.182.248.141

Jake, I agree with everything you said about the 29th. Except the "same fast 5Ks." I'm thinking next time around there is going to be "some faster 5Ks", at least one person under 15 and 3-5 under 17... Maybe even one or two of those under 16.

From Andrea on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 22:13:16 from 67.177.21.60

Adam - based on your remarks, it sounds more appropriate for the race to be called Spooky Fast 5K! (Get it? I know, totally dorky)

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 22:17:24 from 67.177.21.60

You got that right Adam. And you are going to be one of those sub 17s!

From Adam RW on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 22:38:16 from 67.182.248.141

Andrea, I got it and agree that it is a better name and remember I'm a scientist so dorky is about as good as it gets :)

Jake, Thanks for the note of confidence. I haven't been under 17 on the track since 2000 so it is about time I get there again.

My wife said if she has a list of numbers names she can call out laps for all the runners next time.

awesome race! if you need any 50 year old geezers for the October 29 edition let me know!

From Chad Robinson on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 03:27:45 from 208.110.158.227

Jake - Thanks again to you and Andrea for a fanstic event (and nice chatting with you - apparently Julie C is crazy enough). I am sure some healthy competition could have pushed you under 15 (and is was a bit warm). I am definately in on the next go around. And good luck next week.

Holy crud. That is dang fast.

From Little Bad Legs on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 23:33:36 from 68.186.75.3

That is sweet! Way to organize such a quality event--I wish I could join in for the next one (or any of them for that matter). Your miles this year are paying off BIG TIME!

From David Nelson on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 23:47:17 from 50.135.48.254

Nice to meet you guys yesterday, thanks for letting me in as a late entry. Beautiful morning in Salt Lake, and the football game was fun (since our state's team won). I did a race report, for what it's worth:

Good luck in Long Beach and Philly!

Cool little race and the Halloween race should be a BASH too. Good job man your running awesome.

From Nate on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 13:01:14 from 67.252.184.93

Sounds like a cool small event. I'm always a fan of super low key no-frill races

Nice work! Gotta love running pr's in time trials.
