AM - 6 miles. Ran 5 around campus, did some tests at the PEAK center, then another mile back up the hill to HCI.

PM - 2 miles shakeout.

We have a really good wellness program thorugh the U - by participating in a few easy things, we get a massive discount on health insurance premiums (essentially making it no cost). Today I did the Bod-Pod (measures % body fat) and resting metabolic rate tests.

Last year's Bod-Pod test had me at 1.5% body fat, which was obviously way off. This year - even worse! For a machine that costs more than a brand new car, its amazing how inaccurate it is at the extremes (ie. very lean or very heavy people). They ran the test 5 times and the average was 0.1% body fat :-)  Ahhhh I think I'd be dead if that was anywhere near accurate. The Bod-Pod manufacturers like to say that the margin of error is 1-2%, but that is across groups of people... in individuals, it can be off by 5-6%... so add that 6% on for me and I think that is probably a more accurate number.

Then I did the RMR test - where you just breathe into a tube for 10 minutes. Its very boring! That one said that at rest, I burn 1728 calories per day. That seems to make sense.

Overall, the only real piece of worthwhile information I got out of these tests is that I'm ~6 pounds lighter than at this time last year... but I was already well aware of that fact - Andrea reminds me every day :-) I also tried to get them to test my cholesterol for free... no luck on that request, though.

You're too skinny!!!! I have proof now :)

HA! I love Andrea's comment :)

Speaking of wellness at the U have you heard about this? Free Race!

http://healthcare.utah.edu/bewellutah/activities/5k-run.php

My friend actually organizes and runs the fair for the U. I'd like to go, but it is a long run day for me and I don't want to split up my long run. We'll see. Maybe a good tune up for TOU the next week?

Oh, and .1% body fat?!? wow...machines are so perfect I can't stand it.

I wonder what Asbel Kiprop would score on the BodPod? Negative 1%?

If anything, I'm too TALL :-)

RAD - I did hear about that one. I'm running the 5K up in Layton, though.

I'll take a flat 5K over one that is guaranteed to be hard since its on campus! :-)

From RAD on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 09:26:34 from 98.202.23.178

That is why I don't want to do my long run up there :) I'm lazy! I can take the never ending slow hill climbs out here on the West side, but those fault line climbs up at the U are brutal!

From Bam on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 09:41:09 from 89.204.174.52

You've gotta do something about that 0.1% body fat - that's sitting somewhere in your body, slowing you down.

And do you know what it is? It's all that ice cream you scoff. That'll teach you, fatty.

The thought of that lard. Yuk. I'd skip any ideas you had of a taper and put in an extra 20 miles per week - at tempo pace. Fatties don't win marathons:)

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 09:42:31 from 155.100.226.191

Bam - Andrea would kill you if you lived on this continent :-)

From Bam on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 09:50:17 from 89.204.174.52

She'd have to catch me first - oh yeah, she probably could; better shut up.

From Rachelle on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 10:15:18 from 199.190.170.31

Major props for only running 6 miles this morning. :)

How are you alive??? That .1% seriously does not even make sense haha too funny. I hope you celebrated your genius book of world record low body fat percentage with ice cream for breakfast. :)

It just goes to show that you can't trust expensive gadgets!

Except ipads... I trust ipads for everything.

But would you look at that thoracic gas volume!

From Bret on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 12:58:46 from 64.128.133.66

Jake - have you had them do a VO2 Max test for you? What is your height?

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:01:19 from 155.100.226.191

Nope - I'd have to pay for that, and I'm not sure the results would really mean anything to me.

I'm 5'9" (or as Bam would understand, 1.75m)

From Bret on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:06:17 from 64.128.133.66

Heh - my wife complains about my weight too. I had a VO2 Max test run at my gym for a small fee of $40 a couple of years ago. More out of curiosity - because as you say, it doesn't mean too much. It was 65. So I have that going for me.....which is nice. :)

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:16:00 from 155.100.226.191

Oh definitely - I like having the #s and stuff like that is fun to do... out of the curiosity aspect more than anything else... I'm just not the type that is going to base my workouts around what a chart says I should be doing... can't operate that way.

From Bam on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:16:18 from 89.204.254.116

5'9"! If only I were such a giant. I'm a mere 5'7".

From RileyCook on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:27:05 from 132.3.57.68

Jake, seeing your weight makes me realize how fat I am (and yet I'm eating a brownie while typing this!!) We're the same height and let's just say I'm no where near 138 pounds! That's a great running weight, don't let Andrea talk you into putting pounds on.

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:28:47 from 155.100.226.191

She'll kill you next, Riley!

From RileyCook on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:42:12 from 132.3.57.68

Haha. And I do live on this continent. I better watch out.

But seriously, that's a great racing weight. Weight makes a big difference; I'm also down 6-7 pounds from last year and I'm running substantially faster.

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:49:24 from 155.100.226.191

Yeah unfortunately it just becomes a touchy subject, b/c there is a fine line b/w very good racing weight and falling off the deep end. Fortunately, eating 92 gallons of ice cream per month keeps me on the right side of that line :-)

From RileyCook on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 14:07:47 from 132.3.57.68

There can be a fine line, but by no means is 138 on the wrong side of that line. Whatever you're doing it's working, you're putting up great times and lots of miles.

From AngieB on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 15:59:33 from 159.212.71.173

k I feel fat now after seeing this. I better cut out my weekly in and out burger stop and shakes every night.

From steve ash on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 22:04:43 from 174.52.177.84

Like you I had to make ice cream one of my staple food groups to at least make my weight stable. Especially now at 6'2 and around 136-138 lbs..

Scary because I'm almost 42 and should be putting on a few you would think by now!

From Jake K on Sat, Sep 01, 2012 at 13:59:45 from 67.177.11.154

Steve you are just not normal!! :-) But that's good - better to be on that end of the spectrum than the other. Maybe your metabolism will slow down when you turn 80.

From steve ash on Sun, Sep 02, 2012 at 13:13:17 from 174.52.177.84

Yeah, I know, I've known that for years..

I just go with it now:)
