AM - 15 miles up to work. Had to give it an honest effort in the last mile once I realized what time it was and that I had a meeting at 8am. Scrambled into the building, took a super-quick shower (good thing I don't have to dry my hair)... and none of the MDs showed up for the meeting... FRIDAY!!!

My parents are driving up from Arizona today and my aunt/uncle are on their way here from California. They'll all be here for the next week... they rented a place in the Heber Valley... so we'll be spending some time up in the Uintas, etc. I'm headed out that way this afternoon until Wednesday. Really looking forward to some time in cool air and cold water!

PM - 7.3 miles home

I got my bloodwork done yesterday (follow up to the last time I did this back in January). Despite the increased workload (volume and intensity) I've put on my body, everything actually looks better. The big thing I was interested in was my iron level, and while they were very good to begin with, my ferritin is now over 100. Thyroid stuff was perfect, kidney function (another thing I worry about w/ the high mileage in hot weather) was also better than in January. So... I guess I'm doing OK. I figured as much, but its still nice to have some concrete numbers to back that up.

Bam - it definitely fills me with confidence to be able to put in this workload, feel good while doing it, and then get some feedback (ie. the blood work I just got done) that I'm not destroying my body, but actually making it stronger. Now its time to put down some numbers that actually mean something (ie. race results!).

It should be less smoky on the other side of the Wasatch (I hope!)... that will definitely be nice.

The secret is... there is no secret :-)

I take a daily mulitvitamin and a slow-release iron supplement. Honestly I don't know what the total amount is b/w those two things (Andrea - do you?)... its probably ~50mg / day. I haven't gone on a spinach bender in a while, but sometimes I'll go for weeks at a time where I'll eat a ton of it :-) Red meat in moderation... but lots of meat/protein in general.

I don't have the "perfect" diet by any means... but my doctor's advice was to just keep doing what I'm doing b/c its clearly working well for me.

Each iron pill is 45mg and each multivitamin pill is 9mg but I don't know how much of each you are taking.

You also probably eat red meat 3x a week on average.

so about 50mg/day... I take the iron pills about 5-6 days a week... I can probably cut that back to 3-4 now.

I agree, it seems like its working so don't change a thing. I used to take iron while I was wrestling but haven't in years. You've peaked my interest in getting this done as well. Although I'm about half your mileage and that is only recently so probably not as much of a concern.

Good bloods, Jake. Be careful with the iron supplements, especially as your ferritin is high. Perhaps you should lay off the the extra iron -the 45mg pill- for a while and just take the multivitamin. Then get another test after 3-4 months.

I know you're doing rucks of miles etc and there are problems associated with about 20% of male marathon runners etc. But in men, 40 ng/mL is a decent enough reading. Men tend to be good at storing iron and too much iron is not necessarily a good thing. Might be worth you investigating it.

Bam - I agree... I don't wan to go any higher... I feel like I'm at a good place... Recovery is fast... I'm in the sweet spot and just need to maintain where I'm at
