AM - 15 miles, up to work via Tanner Park-Parleys-Wasatch... lots of hills.

PM - 6.5 miles down to SHP... met Andrea and ran a loop around the park with her. On the way there I threw in a faster mile (4:42, downhill) just to make sure the legs still work. They do.

Yeah soooo... we pretty much have to run this race, huh? Although its the same day as TOU 1/2, and on second thought, you are basically paying $20 for a shakeout run and ice cream cone... so maybe not the best deal in the world. Love the concept, though!

Jake, forget all your previous goals and just shoot for a sub 2:00.

Whatever happened to Surge and Jolt? They were ahead of their time - by the time Red Bull came around and started making billions of dollars, those drinks were long gone. They both tasted terrible, though.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 08:46:10 from 155.100.226.54

Rob - Hobie needs to get a life. Or shoot for a sub 3 mile. Its just as realistic.

From Rob on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 08:55:13 from 206.71.84.68

I ran with a 50lb "weight vest" for a while.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 08:57:47 from 155.100.226.54

And you haven't broken 2:05 for the marathon now that you lost it? Jeez - what a slacker you are! :-)

From Rob on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:17:40 from 206.71.84.68

I blame my full time job, and lake of financial backers.

Is it true that St. George Marathon has talked about offering $1 million if someone can run it in Sub 2:00? Or is that Urban Legand?

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:22:38 from 155.100.226.54

I've heard something about that at one time too - my recollection is that it was more of a case of message board commenters saying "St George SHOULD offer $1 million" to entice the Africans to give it a shot. Since StG doesn't even have prize money to begin with, I'm guessing it probably isn't in the cards for them.

From Paul on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:22:55 from 207.224.39.118

The tragic thing is that Hobie truly is an incredible runner, so it's too bad that he's coming off a nut-job and everyone is laughing at him. Back in the day, he'd show up at any given race and just embarrass everyone. Or he might drop out. You just never knew what would happen. It was always fun to start a rumor that Hobie would show up at a given race, just to watch people lose hope. I'm sure the guys from St George have some stories.

Rob - urban legend, but a very good one. Definitely 9/10

From Lulu Walls on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:25:52 from 155.100.212.98

I think we should all pool our money together and finance Hobie!

Oh and The Sundae race would only be worth it if it was actually on a Sunday!

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:26:24 from 155.100.226.54

Paul - you're right - Hobie is an incredible runner. I've always said that I have a ton of respect for him and the times he ran... his 2:16 at TOU is a legitimately FAST marathon. I just don't love the fact that he's taking publicity away right now from the runners who are on the Olympic team and have a real shot to do well in London. I think we should re-visit the sub 2 hr marathon discussion in September, once the Olympics are over! :-)

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:37:34 from 155.100.226.54

Sundae race on a Sunday = not a race you are likely to see at This is the Place park.

They should at least add in a margarita tent if its going to be on a saturday night!

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:41:53 from 159.212.71.199

Seriously what will they come up with next? I would run it if there was a full service icecream/topping bar at each aid station but since you only get icecream if you finish I'm not sure it's worth it. :)

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 09:44:39 from 155.100.226.54

I can buy about 5 gallons of ice cream for $20 and we can race around our block and jump into the swimming pool at the finish - free of charge.

From Andrea on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 10:12:13 from 72.37.171.52

Can we just LAY by the swimming pool and eat ice cream? I think that's the best plan.

From Rob on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 17:50:32 from 166.137.10.82

Am I the one that messed this post up? Anyway, if someone runs sub 2:00 inSt George will it not be recognized? What if it's Boston with a tailwind? People break the WR all the time, only one person will be the first to break 2:00 hours.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 19:19:49 from 67.177.11.154

Rob - it won't count. Races that drop more than like 250 feet don't count (and they also can't be point to point for WR purposes). St George drops like ten times the legal amount. Even Boston doesn't count for a WR - the 2011 situation had nothing to do w/ the tailwind... it was all b/c the course drops too much and is point to point.

From Rob on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 19:35:19 from 166.137.10.82

I guess that's my point, are we talking about a WR or breaking 2:00. Regardless of whether it "counts" someone would have done it. I'm thinking about Hobie here, he never said he could do it on a WR course.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 19:38:05 from 67.177.11.154

I'm sure Hobie's "attempt" would be on a course with a lot MORE drop that StG

From emruns on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 19:38:08 from 76.27.114.171

So, if you and Andrea, (or anyone else) is interested: Tomorrow is our team's 7-11 run. 7 miles, 7 7-11's 7 free slurpees. Tons of fun if your stomach can handle it! We're meeting at Sunnyside Park at 6:30 pm. (I think. That might be a.m., but we usually do it in the evening.) I'll let you know if there is a time change.

From emruns on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 19:59:06 from 76.27.114.171

I was wrong. It's 6:30 AM. That may mess with your work schedules, but if you can swing it, it would be fun to have you guys come.

From DaleG on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 20:43:18 from 152.216.3.5

That run in the morning to all the 7-11's sounds fun.

Nice runs today, Jake!!! That Sundae Run made me want a sundae. Mmmmmm

From DaleG on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 20:44:48 from 152.216.3.5

They sure are coming up with some interesting races these days. What's next? I wish they'd bring the Krispy Kreme Challenge to Utah.

From prestonmadera on Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 21:28:57 from 67.186.200.142

Sub 2 hrs eh? Shouldn't he at least be the best Marathoner in Utah before he starts talking crazy!?

Sorry to side bust ;)

From Holt on Wed, Jul 11, 2012 at 15:12:45 from 67.2.240.4

What Paul said about Hobie is so true. Awesome runner, wacko. He wouldn't give Logan the time of day when they were in the same elevator at the 2008 trials - and they are (were) from the same area. That said, I can't count the number of races that I saw Hobie at the start line and thought, "crap, now I am running for second."

St. George million - a good friend who works for st. George (specifically their running events) once brought up the idea to us on a training run. It started a great discussion about if someone could go sub 2, but I can pretyt much guarentee that the $ would never happen
