AM - 5 miles. Horsepark loop w/ Andrea.

PM - 6 miles. A quick, very easy workout. Warmed up 2 miles w/ Andrea and Allie and then did a "mile down" starting at marathon pace and picking it up just a tiny bit on each successive rep. Splits were 5:14 (1600), 3:53 (1200), 2:27 (800), 68 (400). Jogged a few laps with the girls and called it a day. It was snowing when I left work and the sun was shining by the time we finished the workout.

Letsrun is calling this upcoming week the "8 days of Marathon"... Rotterdam, Boston, then London. Lots of good articles on their site... I particularly enjoyed this profile on Moses Mosop. SI also did a story on Sammy Wanjiru.

Cheering for you.. Just let it roll. Have a great time!

I can do my first set of 400-200-200 with your mile MP this afternoon! :)

From Jake K on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 08:47:49 from 155.100.226.54

yeah that will actually be perfect!

I hope the winds are in his favor... good read.

Nice 5. I totally beat you this morning. ha! :)

Good articles. Thanks for sharing. How are you feeling for the big day?

From Jake K on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 09:23:02 from 155.100.226.54

Dale - the legs feel great, and I'm (strangely) very, very relaxed.

From Lily on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 09:27:42 from 67.199.178.210

Keep that strangely relaxed disposition as long as you can. I really think it can help you going into this weekend.

You know I had to fact check the "top scientists say we can control the weather with our minds" thing:

In short, it was an incredibly flawed study (no proper control group) AND it was statistically insignificant.

ftp://server.fourmilab.ch/pub/rpkp/wishing.weather.pdf

Furthermore they forgot SLC. I hope some Kenyan shows up and runs 2:02:38.

From Jake K on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 09:52:58 from 155.100.226.54

Good research.

Wikipedia's weather control page doesn't even mention that study...

Maybe if Mosop doesn't get the WR in Rotterdam he'll come to SLC for the payday

From Hamdog Alum on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 11:45:46 from 66.188.108.30

It's incredible, break a world record or you don't run. Basically, your 2:03 doesn't mean crap to us. Oh and by the way your record at Chicago isn't good enough either.

May the wind be at mostly his back since he won't be running a point to point. I'd say if he breaks the world record it could go down as one of the greatest performances of all time considering whats at stake.

From Jake K on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 11:48:35 from 155.100.226.54

I know - its ridiculous... and w/ their new system for the 10K trials, Kenya is going to end up leaving a handful of guys like Mosop OFF the olympic team. Better for Galen Rupp's chances, though!

From Lulu Walls on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 12:33:44 from 155.100.212.98

Just overheard something in the lunchroom... rumor is you might actually WIN Boston. No pressure.

From Jake K on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 12:48:02 from 155.100.226.54

Great... so basically no matter how well I run, its still going to be a letdown for those who don't understand what an absurdly difficult task this is.. which at work, is everyone except you and Bryan!

From Lily on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 12:53:18 from 74.82.64.35

Why do they dismiss the 2:03 so easily? The wind? Not flat?

From Jake K on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 13:00:01 from 155.100.226.54

Rotterdam is perfectly flat. It probably has like 3 feet of elevation change in the whole race. But any wind is a major problem when trying to break a WR, as you know from running in Spanish Fork!

The 2:03s at Boston last year were with a tailwind the whole way, and Makau's 2:03 at Berlin was run on a perfectly windless day. Plus, its just HARD to run such a perfect race, even for guys of this caliber. Mosop will really be on the red-line the whole time if he gies for it. The interesting thing will be if he gets it - that changes the game at Boston the next day, b/c then the pressure will be on Mutai to throw down another crazy good time or else he will get left off the Olympic team.

From DaleG on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 13:00:21 from 71.199.57.238

That's great, Jake. This is about the time before a marathon when all my nervous tics take over with a vengeance.

From ACorn on Thu, Apr 12, 2012 at 15:23:36 from 68.66.168.22

Thanks for posting that link on Sammy Wanjiru. What a crazy life!

Jake, Have a safe trip this weekend and remember to enjoy Monday. Have fun with it and everything else will fall into place.

From Curt on Fri, Apr 13, 2012 at 04:44:25 from 69.20.189.206

Good luck Monday teammate! I'm hoping we get a chance to meet in Boston. Have safe travels and a great race Monday. It's been fun to follow you on here and it's going to be interesting to see how you do. You're very inspiring to many people.

From joebell1981 on Fri, Apr 13, 2012 at 05:58:36 from 12.186.80.1

Yeah - I agree that it is absolutely nuts that Mosop has to break the world record to get on the team - I hope this "bold coaching tactic" works and Mosop does something insane in Rotterdam :) (Under 2 hrs?) :)

Anyway, good luck in Boston Jake! The desire to even make it in to Boston has kept me pushing to get better the last 2.5 yrs - I envy all who are running in it or have run in it :)

From Dan Varga on Fri, Apr 13, 2012 at 07:04:02 from 174.27.234.106

Have a great race! Looking forward to reading about the experience. Electrolytes are your friend.

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 13, 2012 at 08:25:02 from 155.100.226.54

Thanks for the support guys!

Yep Dan - electrolytes are going to be extra important if the current forecast holds...

From Nate on Fri, Apr 13, 2012 at 08:31:37 from 128.205.239.137

Good Luck at Boston. Run smart and hope the weather manages to cool off for you guys. I've cleared my Monday and I'm ready to watch the live feed!
