AM - 13.5 miles. 2 up, 10 mile AT tempo in 53:29 (5:21 / mile avg), 1.5 down.

Almost a failed workout. Got into SD after midnight and only was able to get a few hours of sleep. Woke up pretty tired and it was pouring rain outside. I almost bailed a half mile into the tempo, but after 2 slower miles ~5:30 I got into a good rhythm out of nowhere and the rest of the run felt good. Mostly ran the loop on Harbor Island over and over... No traffic there. Happy to get this one in. Hopefully the conference I'm at wont be too boring!

PM - 8.5 miles. Still raining (all day!). I double checked to make sure I wasn't in Seattle. No sign of the space needle. Ran around the harbor, to Petco Park, etc. Just exploring around.

There are islands in South Dakota? :)

Ughhh you finally get there and RAIN. Well at least it wasn't freezing rain. Nice workout per usual. Glad to see you running fast again after those easy days!

Great job "hanging in there" and knocking out 10 @ 5:21 pace. Amazing. Harbor island is a great place to run. Enjoy your trip.

55 deg and pouring rain beats 20 degrees and freezing rain! :-)

Derek - "robot mode"... Marathon pace becomes automatic after a while

sorry about your travel troubles, but i'm glad you finally made it.

i hope you got a cool lanyard to wear at your conference.

You are crazy for doing a hard workout like this on no sleep. Very impressive Jake! I hope you get to sleep during the conference. :-)

From Jake K on Fri, Jan 25, 2013 at 09:52:00 from 174.254.83.209

My lanyard says "Jake Krong , MD"

I'm trying to figure out what the MD stands for. Marathon... ?

I'll definitely make up for the lost sleep :-) the good thing about getting a good amount of sleep consistently is that one or two nights doesn't put you in a hole.

Ha ha! Marathon Dominator for sure!

Another deposit that's sure to reward you with some healthy interest. Well done for sticking in there when it would've been easy to knock it on the head - they're the sessions that count double.

This one is from Paul's interview. The last part is always good, but the first part fits very well in this case: ". . . it’s good and it’s eight to 10 mile tempo, at marathon pace or maybe a bit slower some days due to not feeling it. You have to back off and train to what your body’s giving you".

From Matt Poulsen on Fri, Jan 25, 2013 at 19:38:25 from 98.202.242.213

Great job Jake. And especially a great job forcing yourself to do it when all you wanted to do was give it up. That kind of workout builds character, confidence, and mental toughness. Remember Bob Kennedy's quote about where all the 2nd place guys train? Well done.

From Jake K on Fri, Jan 25, 2013 at 19:55:35 from 107.16.130.217

Everyone has these days when for whatever reason, it's just mentally tougher to get going. Nobody can maintain 100% motivation all the time. But it feels good when you get it done on a day when you easily could have thrown in the towel and no one would have known.

Jason - that's a great point. A lot of workouts, especially tempos, really need to be run on feel.

My parents are down there this weekend, they are pretty disappointed in the weather . . .

From SlowJoe on Sat, Jan 26, 2013 at 07:19:07 from 69.131.141.92

Glad you made it. I guess 10 mile tempos aren't hard enough, so you added in the rain and lack of sleep!
