AM - 8 miles, Last Chance Workout! Warmed up 2 miles around SHP, then down to the track. Cheerleading practice has already started - but they are staying out of lane one (so far). Workout was 5 x 1000m (400m) + 5 x 200m (45s). Splits - 3:04, 3:04, 3:02, 3:02, 2:59, 32.0, 30.8, 31.3, 30.8, 30.4. I have a little weakness in my left butt (pulled something getting out of bed on Sunday morning), but it doesn't really affect me while running, so I'm 0% concerned about it.

PM - 4.2 miles. My concern about my butt went up to about 5% during the course of the day, but it doesn't bother me when I'm running... I only notice it when walking slowly, and I don't plan on doing much of that this weekend. The concern-o-meter would have to get to about 9000% before I'm really worried :-)

The fields are stacked for Saturday and the weather is looking like it will cooperate. Here's the entry lists. Outside of the Olympic Trials Marathon, it has to be the deepest road race in the USA this year... ~85 women and 120 men with solid credentials. The key will be to run smart - not get out too fast and have something left to mow people down in the last 5-8K.

Wow! That's going to be a crazy race. I feel bad for those poor 1:14 guys :)

From Derek D on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 10:59:28 from 166.147.88.30

Way to keep sharp! If most of those on the lists show up it will be crazy deep. More people for you to run with! The whole atmosphere is going to be awesome. I can't wait and I'm excited for you.

The marathon field is really strong as well. Apparently there are about 20 Kenyans in the elite field according to the article in the Duluth newspaper today. Plus a couple dozen good American guys. Should be a great day for racing.

You nailed the workout Jake! I'm sure it was all those HS Cheerleaders that really pushed you to an awesome last chance workout. :)

Also just for the record your 1000 are faster than my 800's. Sheesh your amazing!

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:06:38 from 155.100.226.54

haha thanks - they had some music going so that was something to look forward to every lap. although they did no cheering today, just stretching.

it seems a little ridiculous that i did 10x1000m w/ zero rest faster than that a few days ago. its amazing what you can in races.

From scottkeate on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:13:50 from 216.49.181.254

What an exciting opportunity you have to rub shoulders with such an elite crowd. I love how you keep throwing yourself into the ring with amazing athletes. I wish you the very best and have tremendous confidence that you will run a smart race. You know your body and your capabilities so well.

I haven't done a thorough search for what you're putting out there as your goal for the race. What's the goal?

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:29:39 from 155.100.226.54

"B" goal = PR (sub 1:05:45)

"A-" goal = low 1:05s

"A+" goal = sub 1:05

I'm gonna go out at 4:55-5:00 pace and see what happens. Long Beach was easily the best race, performance wise, that I've had so far, but even in that one I went out wayyyyy too fast for the first 6 miles. A slightly more conservative start and having the pack to work with will hopefully help this time around. Obviously running 30 flat for 10K doesn't necessarily equate to sub 65, but I can hold pace pretty well in the half-marathon, so I feel confident that I'm not setting myself up for a blowup by going out at that pace. Its a great opportunity to run fast. And even though it doesn't count at this point, it would mean a lot to me to go under what was the OTQ standard. It would be a nice benchmark to hit going forward.

From Andrea on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:43:45 from 72.37.171.52

A++ goal - sub-1:05, then tempo run at 5:50 pace with Andrea the last 3 miles of the race :)

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:45:25 from 155.100.226.54

A++ is 1:03-something but I'm a year or two away from that! I thought I wasn't allowed to come back and run in w/ you?!?! I can pull it off I think!

From Andrea on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:46:32 from 72.37.244.100

Haha - if you have enough energy to run 5:50 pace after your race, you did not run hard enough!!

From Rachelle on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:54:46 from 199.190.170.22

I agree with Andrea! :-)

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:59:41 from 155.100.226.54

I agree too. I don't plan to move more than a hundred meters from the finish line to watch Andrea come in :-)

From Derek D on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:59:59 from 166.147.88.20

Jake: if you want I'll meet you at the track for 12 x 200 after my race. Just in case you haven't had enough. I'll bring the chair, beer, and stopwatch:)

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 13:03:17 from 155.100.226.54

haha Derek if you can carry a chair around afterwards that means you left too much in the tank too! i think the smart thing for all of us is to just go sit in the lake afterwards, although that probably means we'll also all freeze to death.

From ACorn on Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 20:18:39 from 24.2.76.146

Very excited for you to run this Jake! You've obviously made some great fitness gains in the shorter distances lately and that should serve you well. Don't forget to have lots of fun!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 06:50:37 from 69.131.141.92

Yep, I'll be very disappointed if you don't squeeze in a quick workout after your 13.1 mile "warmup."

Good luck, looking forward to reading about the race!
