AM - 8.5 miles up to work, easy.

PM - 8.5 miles home, also easy.

I was looking through the historical data for OT standards and # of qualifiers yesterday, and ended up making this chart: 1980-2012 Olympic Trials Marathon History. For the most part the men's standards have remained consistent, getting slightly harder over the years... while the women's standards have jumped around all over the place. I like to visualize how things have changed over the years. A lot of people though that tightening the standards and getting rid of downhill courses after 2008 would cause the # of qualifiers to drop, but the opposite actually happened... it was probably the strongest cycle since the early 1980s and 2012 was the fastest OT marathon ever. Now that the bar has been raised again, it will be interesting to see what happens. I suspect (and hope!) that athletes will rise to the new challenge and it will end up being a very good thing for the sport.

Also - Camille Herron just posted some more information about the USATF meeting, trials standards, and future sites of US Championships. She was keeping me in the loop via email during the meeting over the weekend. Good stuff here, worth checking out if you are interested in how this whole process works. It looks like there will be some new additions to the national circuit, including some team championships at 8K/10K. Very cool... I think FRB could field some teams that could compete very well against the top-notch programs/clubs.

I really enjoyed your analysis Jake and I completely agree that athletes will respond. I would not be surprised to see even more qualify with the new times than in 2012.

Good stuff Jake. You're a bigger running nerd than me. That's an accomplishment. I hope you can get a qualifier out of the way then join me,Allison, and Andrea on a nice 2:42 min jog (for you). That would be cool go do it together.

From Andrea on Tue, Dec 04, 2012 at 11:50:57 from 72.37.171.52

Looking forward to that "jog"!

I can't wait to strap a hydration belt around my waist and run 2:42 w/ you and the girls :-)

This is something that would be of interest to Allison - I was doing a little (nerdy) time adjustment on some HM courses... races like the PHX 1/2 w/ a little bit of (eligible) downhill (assuming you aren't running into a headwind) are considerably faster than a course like Duluth. So 1:17:20s @ Duluth would probably be sub 1:16 on a slightly DH course like PHX. Allison and Andrea aren't as far away from 1:15 as they might think they are.

Interesting numbers. I guess they are just trying to shoot for a certain number of qualifiers each go-round? I didn't realize the men's time went from 2:22 downhill to 2:19 unaided, that's a big jump.

Great workout yesterday.

Its hard to ever really know what they are after. I think you are right and they'd like to have equity in terms of the same # of males and females.

Yeah, 2:22 downhill vs 2:17:XX on an unaided course is a HUGE difference.

Whoever qualifies for 2016 will definitely have earned it!

Interesting stuff Jake.

Nice sets of miles today, too.

Great miles Jake. And great analysis. Very interesting. I agree -- a FRB team could tear it up!

From prestonmadera on Tue, Dec 04, 2012 at 22:14:59 from 67.186.200.142

Get that FRB team going! I would gladly by a commemorative pom-pom to cheer you all on!
