AM - 10 miles. 10K Tempo in 32:23 (5:13/mile avg). Splits - 5:14, 5:24, 5:15, 5:09, 5:14, 5:06, 1:01. Another deposit in the workout bank. I started re-reading Once a Runner (for the 20th time) over the past two nights... that book makes it really easy to get in the right mindset for harder efforts... in fact it makes it fun!

PM - 9.5 miles. So, maybe one workout a day is fun, but I have to admit that getting mentally prepared for #2 is a little more difficult. But such decisions were made long ago, when I decided to run a spring marathon, right? Anyways - warmed up by running 3 miles around SHP then went down to the track. 3 x 1600m in 4:54, 4:56, 4:55 (400m jog), then 8 x 200m in 33.0 avg (200m jog). I was thinking of doing another 1600 rep, but then thought about how I commended Melody and Rachelle for knowing when to pull the plug on their workouts today, and figured maybe I should take my own advice :-)  Without Andrea around, it takes more effort to come to such logical conclusions. In any case, a good workout... I got what I wanted out of it - some LT miles and some turnover work - and I stopped while I was still at a point where I was feeling good.

Its the greatest book about running ever written, period. Not even a contest.

About 8-9 years ago it became very hard to find, and copies were selling for well over $100. After Parker finally finished writing Again to Carthage, the publishers re-printed Once a Runner, and you can get a copy on Amazon now for two dollars!

Agreed - even on Kindle now too. Especially fun to read if you went to school and ran in Gainesville Florida. I have read it a half dozen times now myself.

Tara its a fictional story about a miler named Quenton Cassidy - it takes place during the 1970s era. Anyone who loves running and had ever trained hard will appreciate this book, as it gets across some fundamental truths about the sport better than anything else I've ever read. I can recite 50% of it off the top of my head. Some of the quotes are just ingrained in my thought process.

SloeJoe - you start hitting the track in addition to the tempos and other work you've been doing, and you'll have to change your name to FastJoe!

I remember almost buying it for $100 on amazon. Then a FRB member told us we could borrow his copy- it got passed around a ton of bloggers for the next year. I just got it from the library and read it again earlier this year. Great book!

It was crazy - some of my friends were consdering selling their copies (we ALL had one, so our apartment had 4-5 copies at any given time laying around)... but in the end we all decided it wasn't worth giving it up even for that kind of cash. For the record, I never would have sold my copy, even for $300!

Amazing workout once again!! Targeting lt and turnover wow great job. You are so focused and mentally right where you need to be. AWESOME!! And yes I just bought the book tonight as well ha ha I am a reading geek almost as much as a running one. I can get on the tm with a book and read at a 5.5 to 6 m/m pace

Smart move taking your own advice, Jake. We all know you could have killed that last 1600 - but I'm sure your body/legs are thanking you for not pushing the envelope over the edge. Amazing workouts!

Once a Runner book club! Love it! Not one of you will regret your purchase! Its the greatest book ever. I posted an excerpt (chapter 17) on my entry today. Everything you need to know about running is in those pages.

ACorn - I agree, I wish Parker had never written the sequel. Once a Runner has a perfect ending, the story didn't need to go any further. I just pretend it doesn't exist :-)

OAR is great, but for most folks here on the FRB, Again to Carthage might hit more close to home and be more familiar. It too is a great book about Quenton training for the OT marathon.

I resonnated with Again to Carthage more because is was more similar in situation for me: older now, working man, balancing life challenges with training, focusing on the marathon. OAR was the better written book but since I was not a collegiate miler and came to running later in life it didn't reach me like Carthage did.

Oh yeah I hear you on how the story is easier to relate to... I guess I was just saying OAR is written a lot better. I'd guess that Parker knew Again to Carthage didn't quite have the magic of OAR and that's why it took him 20 years to finish writing it :-) One of my roommates in college had it on pre-order from Amazon for like 5 years

ATC was more relatable, but OAR was 100 times better for me. Funnier, more quotable, just darn enjoyable.

Wow, solid day of training and way to pull the plug, sometimes that's the hardest thing to do. At this point your fitness is so good the only thing you could do wrong is put yourself in a hole. Nice work!
