Thought I would note something so I can look back and see why my miles have been so low. Came down with a nasty chest cold/sore throat. Started slightly on Sun/Mon then hit full bore Tue. it hurts my lungs to walk up a couple flights of stairs and I am coughing like crazy. I guess my legs get another week of recovery. I just hope I have not lost too much fitness and can ease back into training without too much distress.

Ready to try again. 3 miles on the gym treadmill. 1st mile 8:20, last 2 8:00. Just trying to get a feel for how I am feeling. Not too bad..

I continue to be a slacker.  Ran before work yesterday and almost froze, but still felt good to get out and run.  AP 7:29

Hit the treadmill at the gym this morning, pretty good run.  1st mile 8:27, 2nd and 3rd 8:00, 4th 7:30, and last 8:17 to cool down.

Still have yet to determine how much fitness I have lost.  I can pretty much fake these short 3-5 milers.  I still have some pain in my abdominal region but if I can still run on it I will.

Finally got a semi-quality run in,  I was planning on going 10 but at 4 felt some fatigue in the legs and did not want to overdo it.  Looking back I probably would have been fine, but sometimes when you are recovering from injury you have to play it safe and listen to you body.

Went to the JRP starting at the iron bridge in Lehi, headed south.  Everything felt fairly smooth just kept it relaxed and averaged in the 7:50s for the first 7 miles then finished with the last mile in 7:26.  I have missed going out and enjoying the solitude.

On a side note I got a new running partner a couple weeks ago.  I got a black lap puppy and we have been going out the past couple of weeks on some pretty long hikes through the snow and in the fields behind the house.

Got up this morning and headed to the gym before work. I felt bad leaving all the snow in the driveway and the puppy for my wife to take care of, but I had to be at work in Salt Lake at 7:00 and with the snow I did not have much time. She has the day off so she will get a good workout I guess.

Felt really good to get a run in before work.  First 4 miles 8 min pace, 5 the mile 7:47, last 1.25 7:30 pace.  Just a good base run, hopefully I can start running more consistant this week.

Hopefully I am getting back on track, well the treadmill at least.  Due to the snow I opted on another treadmill workout at the gym.

First 5 miles at 8:00 pace, then miles 6-7 at 7:30, with the last mile at 8:00 again.

I am again cautiously optimistic I can start training again and gradually build up on the miles.

Once again an early morning treadmill run at the gym.  I just moved office to Draper which is a lot closer to my house.  It is nice because the gym is right by my work and when it is not so icy and snowy out the Porter Rockwell trail is like a quarter mile from my office.  I could probably even run to work if I was really ambitious.

4 miles at 8:00 pace then miles 4-6.5 at 7:30 with the last .5 at 7:03. 7 miles total- Just working on building my base again and feeling things out.  I hope to average 7 miles per day this week.

Another day running, woo hoo I am on a roll.  Went to the gym again this morning and did 7 there on the treadmill.  I have to have the TV on and headphones in just to keep me interested.  1 mile warm up at 8:00 pace then 3 miles at 7:30, 2 at 7:03 , and a cool down mile at 8:00 pace.  Didnt feel too hard, but hard to imagine hitting 7:03 pace for marathon pace in a couple months.  Just got to gradually build up again and stay healthy.  Hopefully I can continue to be consistant.  Come on warmer weather and dry roads.  The roads where I live were a sloppy mess this morning.

Had to drop the car off at the mechanics in Lehi, so went to the Legacy Center with my wife.  Ran around the track inside, holy turns,  Turned it into a progression run mostly because I wanted to get it over with.  Miles were as follows : 8:39,8:19,7:58,7:50,7:41,7:33,7:17.  Pretty much tried to run easy and push one stretch of the track to marathon pace for a little stride.  The pace felt like I was going faster than what the watch said.  It will be a busy, busy day tomorrow so I hope I can get a run in early.

Good cold run this morning.  My son's baptism is this morning so I headed out early to get the run in.  My eyelashes and eyebrows were covered with ice when I got back.  Started at the iron bridge in Lehi and headed south along the JRP.  The trail was flooded at Willow Park so I headed up on main st. to the 4 corners.  Then North on Redwood until the road the Police driving range is on then looped back to the iron bridge.

My garmin's battery died at mile 4, I was planning on going 10 but when I mapped it when I got home it was only 9.  Legs were feeling some fatigue.  I didn't push the pace and was averaging around 8:20 when my garmin died.  Probably averaged somewhere right in there.

We might go snowshoeing this afternoon so I will get some more time on the legs.  It was a beautiful sunrise this morning.  It's a good day to be alive...

Went in early to the gym and got a quick run in before work.  Not quick as far as speed goes, but still nice to get a run in before work. I was feeling kind of "creaky" getting going, must be getting old.  Maybe it was the damage I did with all the delicious "junk" I ate last night watching the superbowl.

1st mile 8:37, then the next 5 at 8:00 pace, with the last mile at 7:30.  Ended up feeling ok at the end of the run.

Woke up with no energy and a full day ahead. My wife went to the gym early and I had to get the kids ready for school and take care of the puppy in the morning. I was planning on heading out in the afternoon, but still felt sluggish like I was coming down with some sort of sickness. I took the puppy out into the fields behind the house as she had way too much energy from being inside all day.  Ran probably 1.5 through the snow with the pup.  I probably just had a migrane as I am feeling much better today.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
7.000.000.000.007.00

Woke up feeling much better, I think maybe just a migrane last night and probably some old bones. Went to the gym this morning, 1 mile warm up at 8 pace then miles 2-5 at 7:30, with mile 6 at 7:03, cool down the last mile at 8:00 again.

Run felt pretty good, not breathing too hard, but still a sweaty mess.  I think it is still pretty hard on my body to go from 3 miles a week for the past couple months due to injury then back to 7 miles a day.  I probably need to take it easy every other day then get quality workouts in the others until my body is adjusted to training again.

I feel my old bones, too. I was off for about 6 weeks recently as well and also have just kind of jumped back into things. Key for me has always been recovery days, which we need more and more of the older we get. On those days, don't worry about your pace; just leave the watch at home or take pride in your ability to take it slow(er). Your bones will thank you for it come race day.

We're planning a Lake Mtn. group run a week from Saturday around 6:30-7:00 a.m. if you and anyone else can make that work.

Got home very late last night from the Jazz game we went to with the team I help coach.  Had a lot going on today, but I eventually found my way out this afternoon.  The snow let off for the most part with just some flurries the first half.  I thought the roads were clear, but it was VERY slippery in places.  My altras were acting like ice skates in places.  AP for the run 8:09, hard to get on a roll trying not to fall.

Went from the house out towards the highschool, up the hill towards the Ranches  Legs were fatigued by the end, oh well, first double digit run of the new year.  Got to start somewhere.

Woke up early this morning for a dark and cold run from the house. Same route down the canal trail then south on the road. Wanted to do some strides mixed in with the run. I tried to do two strides every mile except the first and last.

Run was ok, my injured ab/groin really did not like the sprints.  I am feeling it now this afternoon.  I averaged just under 8min per mile.  My garmin is not holding a charge anymore and shuts down between miles 6-8 depending on what I am doing.  I was thinking it just wasn't fully charged, but I am positive it was this morning and it still died.  Not good...

What kind of a Garmin are you using? I have a 405CX and I had a similar problem after I'd had it for a few months, like I would charge it all night long, it would say it was 100% charged, and then it would die in the first mile of the run. If that's your problem, I did a manual firmware update, reset my watch to factory settings, and a couple of other things that I can't remember. It took me a while, but I figured it out through Garmin support. Don't toss your watch just yet. Good luck.

From JimmySG on Tue, Feb 12, 2013 at 13:46:03 from 204.113.19.55

I believe it is a Garmin 305, I have been just now looking around on the internet for some suggestions to salvage it. Keeping my fingers crossed as I don't want to have to buy another one and I am addicted to the one I have. Have you heard anymore on the group run this weekend, I got the go ahead from my wife?

From Neasts on Tue, Feb 12, 2013 at 13:58:38 from 71.213.42.178

I'm definitely planning on Saturday, say 7:00? I have the rule of 3, meaning we've got to have 3 for a group run. I'll ask around and see if anyone else would like to come. Our workouts/pace seem to be pretty similar, so believe me, if I can make it to the top, you can too.

Let's see on your watch. On the Garmin support site it says:

What troubleshooting can I do when my Forerunner or Edge will not power on or take a charge?

The Forerunner or Edge from time to time may not power on or take a charge. A soft reset can be performed to unfreeze it. No user information will be lost by doing this reset. The reset is most effective when the device is connected to the computer.

The AutoLocate instructions listed below pertain to the following fitness devices:

Forerunner 910XT, 310XT, 305, 205, 301, 201 or 101

Edge 305 and 205

To reset Forerunner or Edge:

Connect device to computer

Press and hold Mode and Lap/Rest for 10 seconds

Release both buttons

Power device on once device starts to charge

Once the device is powered on, update the device’s operating system using myDashboard. Once the device is on and updated, do not remove from charger until the display shows fully charged.

Really good run this morning for a treadmill. I think just taking recovery runs the day before a good workout is going to continue to tbe the key until I can overcome all my injuries and maybe get younger. 2 mile warm up at 8:34 pace, then 4 miles at 6:53 pace, then 2 miles at 8:00 pace to cool down.  The pace did not seem too overwhelming and hope to lock in the pace into my legs as a conservative half marathon pace on flat ground.

I plan on running a half next month, our local Shamrock Half Marathon, which is a difficult hilly course.  I use it as a gauge every year to see where I am.  It would be nice to break 1:30 on the course.  We'll see...

Awesome tempo! The Shamrock Half course is definitely tough, but conquering Lake Mtn. will make Deception Hill and Evans Ln. and Kiowa Valley climbs all seem like paltry molehills. I think 1:30 is a completely reasonable goal. Wind is always going to be the unknown factor in March, here.

I'm still planning for Sat., still trying to get another runner or two.

Garmin died again after the first few miles, just tried to enjoy the scenery and not worry about pace.  It was fun to float back down the road, had some delicious chocolate milk. I got home to the pup and it was so nice out, I took her out for a 2 mile shakeout run.  Good times...

I thought I would be able to get away from Saturday's run up the mountain without any leg soreness, wrong.  Felt fine on Sat. then sat in the car all day yesterday on a long road trip then woke up this morning and they were pretty sore.  Took the puppy running through the fields behind the house early this morning, then went snowshoeing up the canyon with the family during the day.  Got home and didn't feel too motivated but it was so nice outside, I went for a quick run while my dinner was cooking in the oven.  Felt very nice to be out and got most of the soreness out of my legs.  AP 7:26

Chickened out this morning and went to the gym to run inside.  I've been such a baby with the cold runs in the morning lately.  I was planning on some speed work mixed into the workout this morning, but had a knot in my hamstring and the legs did not feel totally recovered so I did not want to injure anything.

1 mile @8:19, then 4 miles at 8 pace, 1 mile at 7:30, then the last again at 8,  all at 1.0 incline.

I had to listen to my body this morning.  I can run through tired legs and have to train my legs to do so, but this morning it felt like I could injure something if I did any speed work.

Woke up bright and early and went for a jaunt down on the JRP from Willow Park in Lehi. Headed north 2 mile warm-up, then 6 @half-marathon pace. My stupid Garmin's battery died about a mile and a half into the tempo.   I luckily anticipated my Garmin dying and wore my watch also.    I was averaging just under 7 min. pace when it died so I ran until my watch hit 21 minutes, to give me a minimum of 3 miles, then turned around, finished the second half of the tempo in 20:33,  then 2 miles to cool down. Ap for the run 7:29, 6:55 for the tempo miles

I was trying all kinds of mind tricks to not run in the cold this morning as it was about 14 degrees, but I suited up and out I went.  I wish I had a camera when I was done with all the ice on my eyelashes, and beanie.  It looked like I was 80 years old.

Met up with a few other crazy people for a run up Lake Mountain.  Got up bright and early and got to enjoy a spectacular view once we got to the top.  Cruised around the top checking out other towers and areas then cruised back down the mountain.  We added a few extra miles at the bottom of the mountain.  My legs were feeling good until the last few miles as I could tell I was low on fuel.

Now my legs are not loving me very much as I had to head home and go to work sitting in a car for 10 hours.

Got to meet some really great people from the blog and hopefully we can go on some more adventures sometime.

Jimmy, did you know that you were such a good hill climber/trail runner? When those teensy little hills in the Shamrock half come up in the next two weeks, you won't even feel them compared to this! Next time, you have just got to speak up if you're feeling low on gas like that. I always carry extra gels for exactly that reason, and I know je10 had some extra jalapeno pizza in that pack of hers. :-)

Went on the Camp Williams loop from my house this afternoon.  I have been very busy the last two days and did not make it out.  Took the day off of work today to spend some time with my wife.  Wanted to get a decent run in today, went out to Redwood then up the hill past Camp Williams then down past the memorial park to the JRP.  Headed south on the JRP until 2100 north, then headed back up the hill to home.  Ran fairly strong the whole run.  Had a nice headwind once I hit 4 miles then all the way back home.  I ran this run this past Oct. here were my splits from the last run:

 7:49,8:00,8:12 (up the big hill),7:22,7:38,7:29,7:55,7:53,7:55,7:56,7:34,

Todays splits:

The Narrows up there by CW on the JRP is such a nice, quiet place; I hardly ever see anyone there ever. That course is pretty much all hills, either up or down, and that is a lot of improvement. I firmly believe that the more hills you do, the faster your street times will get.

Met up with Chet during our lunch time, for a run on the JRP.  My legs were pretty fatigued when we started.  He wanted to to 2 miles @7:08 pace. 1 mile warm up then started the 1st mile repeat, almost let him go as my legs did not respond at first, then got into a groove and got it done, 7:03, 7:04, with a mile cool down back to the cars.

It was very nice to run with Chet again and catch up on old times.  We'll have to try to do it again more often, now that I work out of Draper.

Did another mile and change with the dog in the fields when I got home.  She jumped up two big rooster pheasants which got her motivated to run more.

Got up early this morning to the sound of wind.  I got dressed to head out for the run and my poor tummy started protesting the milk I drank last night.  I did not have time to see if it would settle down, so I changed into my inside clothes and headed to the academy for a treadmill run.

Only had one emergency potty break about a mile in, then the stomach was ok for the rest of the run.  First three miles @8:13, the miles three to ten @8:00, then the last 3.1 at 7:47, to just average 8:00 for the run.

Brought a dvd and watched the office the whole run.  Had the gym all to myself.  I might try to get some extra miles in later.  I had to get back, eat, change coach Jr. Jazz at 9:00 AM.

On the road at 5 am this morning. Headed south from the casa until I hit 3.5 then turned around. With the time change it was a dark, solitary run. It was good to have some time to myself to think.  Didn't push the pace and just ran, GPS died 4 miles in and I was averaging about 8:30 pace.  Legs and past injuries have been bothering me some, hopefully just need some rest and not pushing it today I can rebound quickly.

Enjoyable run this morning, went from the house out towards the highschool up the hill into the Ranches.  Turned around when I hit 5.5.  Was thinking about some speed work thrown in the mix this morning but my hip/groin area was having none of that, so I just ran a steady base pace.  Got to watch the sun come up and enjoy the morning.  AP 8:11

Slept in this morning until 7 then went out on the Camp Williams loop run from the house. Up and around Camp Williams then down to the JRP, then back up 2100 N to the house. Warmed up three miles until I hit the top of the hill and once I hit the light started a tempo run. First three miles 8:25,8:32,8:54- Tempo miles 6:44,6:52,6:45,6:53,6:46,6:47, two mile cool down 8:39,8:14.

Wanted the tempo miles to be about at half-marathon effort.  Felt pretty good, the last mile I was starting to hurt as I was heading back up the hill on 2100N.  Glad I got this one in and hopefully it didn't aggravate anything too bad and I can continue to get some quality runs in.

Now I get to work all day and into the night.

Out and back from the house all by myself this morning.  We had basketball and football games this morning so I got up early and got this one done.  Headed up 73 to the Ranches then ran south to the 4way stop then ran towards Eagle Mountain until my watch hit 7 miles.  Right when my watch hit 7 the battery died so I turned around.

Had a Davy Crocket sighting about mile 9.  The shamrock half marathon was this morning so I found the mile markers and ran a mile up then back to make sure I got 16 for the morning.  Probable averaged 7:50 for the run.  It was mostly uphill the first 7 and got some good miles coming back with the last few miles in the low 7s.

I was wanting to run the half this morning, but still not feeling healed up and knew I could not hold back on the race and would probably hurt something.  Plus with the games and cost involved I did not even sign up.

Had to do the unthinkable this morning.  Woke up to about 6 inches of snow at my house and no plows in sight.  I have a lot of obligations today so the run couldn't wait, put the 4 wheel drive on and headed to the gym.

Had the gym all to myself and ran 18 on the treadmill.  That has to be a record as I don't see how anyone can stand to be on one any longer than that.  Put the office in the dvd player and away I went.  First 9 miles @ 8:00 pace, then 3 @ 7:53, then 3 @ 7:49, then 2 @ 7:30, with the last mile close to marathon pace 7:08.  AP for the run 7:51

Got home and took the pup on for a jog through the fields with my snow boots on for another 1 mile.  Overall I can't complain, got my longest run of the year in and my legs came out of it in ok shape (so far.)

Went from the house this morning south, hit the little half loop, then up the hill into the ranches.  The gas station is exactly 6.55 to make a half-marathon distance.  After the first mile I did a quarter mile pick up every mile to about 6:20 pace, faster or slower depending on the hills.  Legs were feeling pretty good.  Didn't kill myself and tried to stay relaxed.

11 miles this morning, ran solo from the house to SR73 then headed up the long hill into the Ranches.  Once I hit the top of the hill at 3.5 miles started into a tempo run.  Turned at the gas station, ran to the next gas station and went east towards the high school.  Turned at the bottom and headed back home.  Once I hit the light at 73 just ran easy the rest of the way back home.

Ended up with 6.5 tempo miles: they felt hard today - 6:48,6:52,6:54,6:39,6:59,last .5 7:00

Highest mileage for a week ever and legs are feeling pretty decent right now.  I was worried going into the run this morning how my legs would do on the long run this morning.  Woke up pretty early for a weekend and hit the inlet park at the south end of the JRP.  Up and out running before the sun came up.  It was nice to run with no beanie or gloves.  Hands were a bit cold the first half of the run before the sun came out and warmed things up.

Took the first 10 fairly easy to test out how things were feeling, averaged 8:02 pace for the first 10 miles.  I was feeling pretty good on the way back especially after climbing all the hills up behind Camp Williams.  Garmin died out there but the trail has mile markers every half mile so it made it convenient to get my splits with my watch.  Averaged 7:31 pace the first 3 miles of the way back, then got splits every mile from there on last 6.5 miles went like this : 7:38,7:32,7:23,7:27,7:07,6:55, and 3:24 for the last half mile.   AP for the 20 miles 7:43

Felt good pushing the pace on the way back, I could have used another goo pack.  I took one at the half way point.  It was a nice course as it is an out and back and the rolling hills mixed in helps.  With rested legs and good fuel I should have some good races this year.  Over two months until Utah Valley Marathon...

Long day at work today, didn't have much time this morning. Almost went back to sleep but changed and at least went out for a little. Im sure the possible 10 pounds I put on after pigging out for easter weekend motivated me out the door. Ended up not running this morning and had to sneak a run in tonight befor bed.  Ran to the city park in the hood which is a half mile around.  Was wanting to get some quarter mile repeats in on the grass to ease the pounding on my legs.  Ended up doing quarter mile repeats with an equal amount of recovery in between.  All the repeats were either 1:23 or 1:24 so stayed pretty consistant.  I was planning on at least a few more but it was dark and I went down on a loose piece of sod on my last recovery jog and didn't want to injure anything so I called it good and jogged home.

It was pretty fun getting some faster turnover going with the legs.

Waited until around 8am to hit the JRP trail starting at the Iron Bridge.  Wanted to get some tempo miles in.  2 mile warm up - 8:44,8:49, then 5 mile tempo 6:52,6:48,6:51,6:50,6:47, 2 mile cool down 8:36,8:27.  AP 7:37

I was hoping to have a lot more pop in the legs after taking it easy this week.  The warm up and cool down almost hurt more than the faster miles.  I kept telling myself to relax on the tempo run, the mind is a crazy thing, once I got it in my head I was just going to do 5 miles faster that was all my body would let me do.  I also thing it is past time to buy some new shoes.  I just hope they last a few more weeks without causing any injuries, as I want them somewhat fresh for the race.

That is not good news about the hernia. You ought to see the doctor first to make sure that's what it really is, and THEN suck it up and do Utah Valley. :-) Does all running aggravate the problem or just fast running?

On your wife's foot, I used to have similar problems until I used the Strassburg Sock (got mine at Fleet Feet) and also switched shoes to ones with a decreased heel lift. No problems since.

This afternoon's run was one of the most brutal ones I have been on.  The wind was screaming from the north.  I wanted to fight the wind on the way out and not on the way back, that meant doing the Camp Williams Loop.  The first 3.5 miles were pure torture especially up the hill on Redwood to Camp Williams the headwind was brutal and would almost stop me in my tracks at times.  I forced myself not to stop and made it up the hill.

Just kept it easy in the narrows on the JRP and cruised along until I hit 2100 N. the climb back up to Redwood was also not fun and the wind was just beating me down.  Finally got back to my house and went in, I was feeling lightheaded for quite a while and felt totally wiped out even though I only averaged 8:20 per mile.

2 mile warm up around 8:00 pace, I felt good during the warm up so I decided to go ahead with the tempo run. I wanted the pace to be between 7:10-7:14. Locked in the pace and felt pretty comfortable for the run, I was planning on going 6 but felt good so I extended it another mile. 1 mile cool down. Early solo run on the JRP starting at the Iron Bridge.  2 mile warm-up to Willow Park 8:14,8:16, then 8 mile marathon pace tempo 7:09,7:07,7:10,7:08,7:08,7:04,7:08,7:02, AP for the run 7:21.  Tried to keep all the tempo miles in between 7:08-7:12.  I like doing tempo runs there as it is honest course as it is an out an back and some rollers but not too crazy.  Run felt comfortable hard.  Left leg below my calf got a little tight the last couple miles.  Hopefully just a minor little tweak.

Went with my wife down to inlet park, out and back on the JRP.  My wife did six then got on the bike and met me to ride with me for the rest of my run.  I was trying to get a feel on how my calf would react and cut it short if needed.  I was tight the first little bit, but my 7:50 pace felt like I was running 8:30 pace so kept going, pretty much was a non factor for most of the run.

Felt pretty good for most of the run, ended up with a 7:47 AP without pushing it too hard.  Wanted to do 20 but I was glad I cut it short, got on the bike and rode home and my wife drove our car.  So an extra 10 miles on the mountain bike into the wind.  So at least my legs got a good workout without all the extra pounding.  I can already tell I got too much sun out there...

I don't know about you, but I'd always prefer to get the run in first and be tired toward the end of the work day, because work is its own motivation (it has to get done whether I want to do it or not). It was a beautiful morning. Good job getting it done.

Went for a lunchtime run today in Draper. Parked at the corner of 1300 East and Highland Drive. I was hoping for 10 today and thought the parking lot was farther from the equestrian park, nope only .30 miles. Oh well...  had a fun run solo, and got to hit the trails to break up the work day.

Did the same route up corner canyon which I did with Neasts and the gang last week.  Had a moderate effort on the way up and just floated down.  AP for the run 9:29, total time 1:09:15 just for my reference if I do it again.  Was going to add some miles at the end but once I hit the car I did not want to go any further on the paved trail.  Legs felt fine during the run so that's good.

Met up with a large group(9) of other crazy runners for a early morning trail run. My wife saw what time I was setting the alarm for and she said it was "ludicrous" I had never even been up Millcreek canyon before so it was nice exploring somewhere new.

I was planning on only doing one lap, but the legs felt ok and the miles flew by with the other runners so I decided to add another lap. I really love to run on the trails and have spent a lot of time up in the mountains but this was probably the longest trail run I have done. Hopefully after the Utah Valley Marathon I can take a respite from hard training and spend some more time up in God's Country.

Got to meet some more people from the blog and had a great time...

You did great out there this morning. I don't know about you, but those trails thrash me in a different way from road running, I think they're both hard.

Did you figure out your watch? If not, use the menu to go to settings, data fields, training field 1. Mine has 3 fields, so if I click on that, then it takes me into the screen where I can set what I want. The big field is blinking, so click the bevel again, and scroll down to "Pace" and tap the bevel to choose it. That one will show you what you're doing at the moment. Then use the bevel to select the other two data fields. I like to have one for "distance" (total mileage so far) and one for "average pace." On the second data screen, I like to see elevation, although I don't use it that much. Hopefully this isn't more confusing than the manual. :-)

Woke up and my legs were pretty tight and I have been neglecting my puppy so I grabbed her to have a nice jaunt through the fields by the house. She had a blast running, chasing birds, and swimming in the canal. I just enjoyed the morning, my legs loosened up after about the first quarter mile, don't want to do any tempo work today but will try to add some extra miles in this afternoon.

Went down to the JRP for my standard Sat. long run, started at the Inlet Park.  Had some fairly tired legs at the start, ran the first 9 averaging 7:56, and feeling fairly smooth.  Wanted to get some marathon pace miles on tired legs hopefully without doing any damage. Ran the last six at MP - 7:12,7:04,7:07,7:06,7:07:7:11, felt pretty good about those miles, did not run with a GPS, just my watch and the mile markers on the trail, so I am hoping the pace is getting locked into my legs.  AP for the total run 7:37

Got some good advice from Sasha concerning the upcoming Utah Valley Marathon and how to properly pace it.  Thanks!

Recovery run from the house this morning, ran to the canal trail then up the dirt road up past the quarry till I hit 3 then came back home. Legs and body were really sore this morning, just took it really easy, like averaged 9:30 pace. Planning on some more easy miles this afternoon on the grass.

PM: Headed to the park with my middle boy, he rode his bike the half mile there then ran a mile on the grass around the park with me, he played at the park while I did another mile, then joined my for the last mile, then we ran/rode home together.  It was very nice to spend some one and one time with him and spend the afternoon together.  He is so fluid when he runs, if he ever gets serious about running he will do some great things.

It was a harder run for me this morning.  I was having a bit of a time getting going.  There were a lot of hills for most of the run.  I tried to keep a decent pace up the steepest hills.  My legs were feeling pretty fatigued by the end of the run.  AP 8:06, but felt like I was giving an 7:35 effort.

It's my wife's birthday today so I waited until my lunch time to run so I could get the kiddos up and off to school and make her breakfast this morning.

I was torn on what workout to do today. I ended up with a migrane last night and have been feeling super tired lately so I did not end up going running just tried to get to bed earlier.

Decided on a 10 mile goal marathon pace run today.  Went to the Porter Rockwell trail in Draper.  Started at the Draper Park and did an out and back.  There is a fair amount of hills in the run, so I just tried to keep the effort even and see how it felt.

Miles were as follows: 7:06,7:15,7:13,7:15,7:22,7:03,7:05,7:14,7:09,7:07  AP 7:11

I was shooting to hit between 7:10-7:14 so I was pleased.  Didn't red line but it was not exactly a walk in the park (which I did do once my run was done.)  If nothing else I did my first double digit marathon pace tempo for the year.

Wow, nice job on the tempo. Your mileage and pace have really taken off. Now it's just a matter of tapering smart and not questioning your ability (because a taper usually sucks); you've put the effort in the bank and UVM is withdrawal day. There will be NO barely missing the qualifying BM mark this time!

Another long run on the JRP starting at the Inlet Park.  I was planning on 17, but ran into a friend after 14 and ran a bit with him.  Probably added another .5 with him until I convinced him to go the other way with me.  No GPS just watch, just tried to keep the pace comfortable and not injure anything.  I was averaging 8:05 per mile up to 14 then the little add on messed up my mile tracking.  Kept it pretty much the same the last few miles.  Run felt ok this morning, not crazy fresh legs or anything but ok.

I was proud of my wife as she finished 11 as I did my run.  She will be good to go for the half.

Really need to start going to bed earlier and catch up on my rest.  Got home from work and the pup was itching to get out.  Ran with her for 4.5, in the rain, felt really good, ran up the dirt road to the new water tower, then back looped around in the fields and had a blast chasing the dog through the sage brush in the rain, soaking wet and wooping  her up.

Little more than a week and a half until Utah Valley then it is fun run time.  Longing for some mountain time.

Last run before the marathon on Saturday.  Had a good time reviewing all the good runs building up for this race, and all the personal growth I have gained.  We all have our reasons for running and they seem to change for me with time, but in times of grief and joy, I always feel comforted when I run.  Must have been the great sunset, but it was a great night to be out.

Still trying to process the race this morning.  Stayed with my in-laws in Orem the night previous.  Very little sleep as we had a tiny bed and it was burning hot.  Up at 2:30, ate some breakfast used the potty and had my wife drop me off at the bus drop off.  I was having my usual pre-race tummy issues but was there with enough time I thought it was all over by the time the race started.

Felt really good the first few miles, smooth and relaxed.  Miles 1-7, 7:04.6:58,7:01,7:03,7:06,7:07,7:08, I could tell in here my stomach was not doing well, I kept looking for the bathrooms which were supposed to be every 2 miles but did not see one.  I didn't want to go, and kept hoping it would go away but it was hard to keep a good rhythm.  Hit the hills at 8-9 7:33-7:39, just kept it pretty smooth and didn't try to push it too hard up the hills.

Miles 11-13 - 7:07,7:26,7:13, I wanted to go out more aggressive to at least give myself a chance to qualify for boston it things worked out.  I asked Sasha what I would need at the half to give myself the chance and he said 1:34 should cut it.

I was right there, BUT, my stomach had other plans finally found a bathroom before the start of the half and watched my average pace just plunge.  I crossed the half after the long potty break around 1:35:30 ish and knew I would have to push it the second half.

Miles 14-7:50 potty break, 15 7:24, I knew I was in trouble here, stomach kept having issues and there was no port-a potties to be seen.  Tried to stop as I had thankfully packed some TP in my pocked (first time ever, what a blessing)  no where to go and had to keep plugging along mile 16 - 7:44 Mile 17 8:47, saw some bushes on the side of the road and there was no going any further, went into the bushes and my music cut off, my ipod got caught on some branches and flew off into the trees, lost  a lot of time briefly looking for it and doing my business.  Saw my mileage on the GPS and decided just to come back later and look for it.  Made a little flag with some TP to mark the spot where it flew off.

I knew at this point my chances of breaking 3:10 were pretty much gone and I was pretty mad about the no potties and losing my I-pod, tried to use some anger and maybe run faster, miles 18-19 7:22-7:15,

I was in trouble here and decided to just use it as a learning experience and enjoy the scenery.  Not getting any speed out of the legs and decided to save them and just call it a training run for the rest of the way in.

Miles 20-26 7:31,7:33,7:44,7:42,8:05,7:42,7:22, had a good finish but did not turn off my watch.

Met up with my wife at the finish and had a memorable time with her.  So proud of her.  Saw a few people from the blog at the finish.  Legs are a bit sore but should not be very bad this time as I took it easy the last few miles.

On a positive note, I beat my spring marathon time from last year, I have not been able to do any speed, real tempo runs due to injury and realistically expected to be around 3:20, and drove back on the course to mile 16.51 and found my I-POD hidden in the leaves.

Time to hit the trails....

I have been letting my legs recover from the marathon last week, still feeling some residual soreness so I have just been going on hikes this week.

It is our annual ward 5K and I wanted to run it with my kids today.  Brought the dog along with me, TJ (6) rode his bike, my wife Laurel ran it, and I ran with Spencer (10) and Trenton (8).  Took off and Trenton and Spencer were in the lead pack, a high school kid took off and we didn't see him until the finish.  I wanted to see what my kids could do so I told them to run it as hard as they could, but be smart with the course as it is Harvest Hills and the course was pretty much hills the whole way.

1st Mile7:58, my boys were pretty much running side by side and looking good,  Mile 2 - 8:12, still holding strong I kept trying to motivate them and keep them running strong.  I was impressed with Trenton as he was staying with us and looked good.  Mile 3 - 8:13, lots of uphill this mile and my kids were battling with a few other grownups from the neighborhood.  I told them to push it up the hills and then the finish was all downhill the last .25.  I was so proud of the way they pushed, now there was only one guy in front of them.  I was cheering them on and having the time of my life (well pretty much.)

Last downhill push to the finish Trenton said he just could not go any faster and I urged him to push.  He broke the mental barrier and pushed it in and caught the guy in front of us.  Spencer had took off and was just in front of us as we finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th overall.  I was so proud of them and believe Trenton could have some incredible races if he trains and focuses on running.

AP for the run 8:05, as a bonus my legs held up fine and will start to run again next week.

My 2nd and 3rd legs of the Wasatch Ragnar,

Leg 23, started about 2am, I really enjoyed myself on this run, no music, didn't check my Garmin, just delighted in the ability I have to run under a big moon in the middle of the night under the stars.  Started out fairly easy and progressed from there, ended up with a 7:16 AP with 429ft of elevation gain in the 5.5 miles.

My last leg (35) is the drop down from the top of Guardsman's Pass down into Park City, legs responded ok but once again just tried to enjoy the run and not kill the legs too much, averaged 7:03 for the run but was in the low 6's for much of the first few miles, due to he 2791' of elevation loss.

Overall I had fun and got to get to know some of my neighbors better and made some great friends.  I never go into these with a competitive team and just have fun and eat some delicious junk food.  Now a day later my calves are a bit tight but did some jogging and walking with the family and I hopefully will be good to go again this week after a few days of taking it easy.  Go team Wasatch Your Back...

Whew, it is a hot one out there. Got done at 3:30 and the sun was very hot in the dirt trails. I was wishing I had a hat during the run. Glad I was solo as I would have blinded anyone around as I went shirtless and used my shirt as a bandana half way through the run.

Needed to break up the monotony of the day at the office so I did a solo trail run up Corner Canyon in Draper.  Did the same route we did with Neasts and the gang a few months ago.

Just trying to get the last bit of soreness out of the legs from Ragnar, mowed the lawn yesterday and felt today was the day to get back to it.  Just wanted to keep running the whole time today, mission accomplished, didn't walk once, just kept it consistant.  Took 32:15 to get to the gate at the top, and 1:05:15 total.  Just wanted to keep track for future runs. 1200 vertical feet

It was really nice to get out and hit the trails.  A smoothie sounds about perfect right now.

Wednesday Wire with some of the Wasatch Wranglers.  First time running up Wire.  It was a lot more power hiking on the way up than I imagined.  There were a total of 5 of us, who met up at 5:30PM which meant for some hot running as it was in the mid 90s.  If nothing else I can say I won a race as I was the first one to the top in 39:35.  I was sweating up a storm and got seriously humbled on the way down as the other guys tore down the mountain with what appeared reckless abandon.  I thought I was moving ok but they just ripped right by me.

I did pick up some pointers for downhill running watching and talking with them.  Maybe some day... I do not know the total mileage I heard somewhere between 5.5-7, so I will put 6, but it felt like 20.  Total time with stops at the top and everything 1:27:47

Epic group night run to the top of Mount Timpanogos.  There were 18 of us, felt good on the way up, and just chatted with the other runners.  I didn't bring my garmin so I did not have the exact.  Saw Crockett on his way down and on his way up as he did a double that night.  I got to the top in 2:13, felt fairly easy on the way up.  Hung out in the shed for about 15 minutes, we got to the top around midnight.  On the way down I stopped and helped another runner fix his headlamp and also chatted with another runner for about 15 minutes as he was struggling.  Ran most of the way down by myself.  I could feel my groin/hip flexors tightening up on the way down and could not get any speed out of my legs and I was done by the end of it 1:58 down..  Hung out at the finish with the other crazies and had a great time.  Got to figure out what I need to do, hope it was just a bad day for the legs.

I really thought I would not be able to walk in the morning but my legs are ok now.

Holy moly, had to log something tonight or forget my password due to not running for so long.  Been dealing with some tweaks I needed to ease up on.  Went out with the pup in the fields above the water tower.  Hopefully I can get some decent runs this week to feel this out.  On a plus note I have had a lot of energy to work on the house, painting and putting in wood floors.

That one mile was well earned. I never was so tired running as I was the week we refinished all of our hardwood floors a couple of years ago...

Wednesday Wire with the Wasatch Wranglers crew. 5:30 am start, just one lap for me. It was good to have a run to see how my body was feeling but not totally kill myself. As usual I can usually get uphill decent and made it to the top in 40:39, I was taking it pretty easy the first half then pushed it a bit more the second half up.

Ran pretty much by myself on the way down.  I am almost getting the hang of running trails downhill.  At least it felt better and smoother than the last time I ran it.  Probably should invest in some trail shoes as my instincts are slicks on the bottom.  Good times and by body did not protest too much.  Hopefully I can keep it up and get some more adventures in soon.

Early morning Timp. Summit with Ben, Nate, and Neasts.  I was a little worried after bonking pretty hard on the way down a few weeks ago on our night summit.  Got there at 4:00AM and the parking lot was full.  Had to shuttle some cars down the road and did not get started until about 4:30.  I pretty much ran with Ben the whole way up.  1:58 moving time to the top.  Felt pretty strong on the way up. There was a lot of waiting on hikers on the way up and down.

Hung out at the shack at the top, refueled, and took some pictures then headed down, we stayed together on the way down.  Felt fairly strong the whole way down, 1:34 return trip. With all the waiting on hikers and not killing ourselves.  Legs are feeling pretty good now, just need a nap.

It was like we were rock stars running up past the hikers....

Great job out there today, Jimmy. You and Ben were like machines off in the distance that I could occasionally glimpse only because you were wearing bright colors. I've since found out that several stakes' singles wards from northern Utah County were up there to check out the sunrise, so that explains all of the student-aged population. Awesome day!

It was a great morning, still can't get it into my head how Nate pulled a double, maybe someday..

Figured I would at least document, so I can track the progress. Pulled my injury again last Tue. 07/23, at a basketball game at work I was talked into, lately it has taken about a week and a half to get back into running condition without doing too much damage.  Hopefully this week I can hit the mountains and trails again without pulling anything.

PM: went on a 3 mile hike with my wife and our dog to the upper watertowers above the house.  Ran about a half mile, felt ok.  Itching to run again, don't want to pull anything but needing a good run.

Well, that is not good. Funny, my husband and I were asked to come last-minute to a ward co-ed softball game last week and the only thing I could think about was making sure I didn't pull a muscle or roll an ankle rounding bases. We need to just say NO to these kinds of things!

About a mile or a bit more running back and forth between my oldest football tryouts and my other son's first day of practice.  The practices were on opposite sides of the school, and I wanted to see as much as possible of both practices.  Legs felt ok, should start running for real again tomorrow.

Morning run up Grandeur peak with some of the Wrangler group.  Feeling the legs out the first bit, felt ok so I kept goint to the top.  Gorgeous sunrise at the top, then cruised down and got to work before 7am.  What a great way to start the day, looking for one more peak this week, well maybe two...

Added another mile at football practice tonight doing the same thing as last night....football is here and my summer afternoons are officially over.

Fun adventure this morning put together by Neasts.  There were six of us on the run this morning to the top of Flattop Mountain.  Lots of trail finding and some scrambling, had a great time and my legs are officially trashed.  Coming down and cruising through the overgrown trail made my shins pretty cut up with little cat like scratches.  Stung for a while in the shower afterwards.  But all in all everyone made it out in one piece and had a blast.  Two and a half more weeks and I get to spend a solid week out in the mountains, can't wait.

I think we may as well call Lewiston Peak the second peak, just for the sheer torture it inflicted on us today. :-) Great job up there today! Really, so much fun. Yeah, the shower was a sting-fest. Next time wear chaps, maybe? :-D

It's been a long while! Have you been taking a break from running? Any plans to hit the trails in the near future?

Well, it is what it is, haven't been really running besides some long trail runs in August and some short ones with the dog the last month or so. I recently transferred to Richfield for work and have been super busy with work before I got transferred and getting the house ready to sell ect... Family is still in Utah County until the house sells and I am working M-Thurs here and traveling back on the weekends.

Not the most ideal situation.  Been working long hours to keep myself occupied.  Went out last night and ran some of the roads around town.  Garmin was dead, so nice to get back out, ran for about 40 minutes.  Did one mile on the highschool track in 7:05 and felt way too hard.  I have been meaning to get out and explore some trails and areas here.  Still dealing with an injury that just won' go away, I was hoping with my time off it would heal.  Oh well, the work must go on.

New record... two days in a row. Ran from where I am staying on a little country road out 2.5 miles then back home. Pretty much starting again from scratch. Got the garmin charged AP 8:03, felt good to get out and run again.

Heading back home this afternoon... can't wait.

JimmySG! Glad to see you're still getting in the occasional run. Your plate is definitely full at the moment. Hopefully we'll all be able to touch base once in a while on a weekend run. And I definitely look forward to reading the results of your trail explorations in your new part of the state. :-)

Took my kids for a hike/run up from Temple Springs at the mouth of the Provo Canyon.  Saw a bunch of deer, then had blast with kids running helter skelter back down in the fresh powder.  They said it was the best part, running parkor style down the mountain.  Just ordered me a couple pairs of altra lone peak 1.5, to gear up for the new year and new adventures exploring new trails.  Just moved to Monroe last week and the mountain is calling my name.

Arrived back home and there was a package of two new pairs of Altra Lone Peaks 1.5 on the front door. Took the pup and hit the roads, first run in my new town of Monroe.  I really think I will enjoy running here, mostly flat, no traffic, and very scenic.  I can also hit the hills or the canyon just minutes from my house if I want to get to the high country.  Now I just have to find some new running partners which I miss terribly.

Well, I had to start again sometime so why not today.  Just went a little over three miles pretty relaxed, ended up on a snow packed country lane until it ended then came back home.  AP 8:36, felt like 7:40's so I have a ways to go.

Four miles with my dog, went from the house down Main, continued past the mouth of the canyon on the dirt road unti I hit two miles than came back.  Really enjoyable on the dirt road, no cars, no inversion, just let the dog off her leash and ran.  I was tempted to go further but I will ease into this running thing... AP:8:28
