A little warmer than it has been the last few days (62) but still nice morning. I did a long run this morning but cut back the distance some since I am tapering down. I felt good this morning starting out and was able to quickly settle into a comfortable pace. I felt good as I went along and started picking up the pace after the half way point. I ran the last 3 or 4 miles close to MP (7:10 - 7:20). One thing that I worked on today was taking gels more regularly than I normally do on long runs. I usually only take one on my long runs but today took one at 6 and 12 miles. I felt fine so hopefully it won't be a problem in the race. I was thinking of taking them at 6, 12, 18 and 23 in the race but I am a little concerned about having stomach problems. The other option I thought of was taking them at 8, 16 and 22. If you have any thoughts on this please let me know since I am trying to keep fueled during the marathon but don't want to cause any stomach issues.

Jim,

Nice run today! Those MP miles seem to be getting easier and easier. You're peaking at the right time.

2 weeks to go...

I am starting to feel better by cutting back a little this week. Hopefully next week will be even better. Jon, you are down to one week, right? It is an exciting time but I still get a little nervous thinking about it.

Nice run Jim. I can usually only handle 3 GUs during the marathon and maybe one right before the start. Sometimes I can't bring myself to gag the last one down. But I know others who take them every 4 or 5 miles and get 4 or 5 down them during the race. Maybe since you haven't been taking them much during your long runs you could go with the 8, 16, 22 plan and then maybe drink gatorade in between (but not WITH the GUs) to try and get the extra 500-600 calories during the run.

Thanks Tom! I think you are right. I haven't been taking many during training so better not try anything too different.

From Jon on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 20:29:38

Yeah, stick with what you have been doing. You can get by with just gatorade, even, if you want. I usually take 2-3 gu's, if any.
