Made it to Honolulu and got out around 3:00 this morning on a normal day (75, humid, very windy).  I did my normal route for the area up around Diamond Head.  I wanted to a medium long progression run this morning.  Started off easy for the first few miles then started to gradually pick up the pace.  It was nice to hear the ocean as a ran even though I couldn't see much of it at this time in the morning.  I had mapped out a run on the computer but got to one part around 5 miles where there was a seriously steep/long hill (at least 15%) so didn't think this was good for the progression pace so just started heading down random streets.  When I came back and mapped it on the computer it ended up being 11.8 instead of the 12 miles I planned.  Anyway, I hit the turnaround in 48:48 and then started picking up the pace more aggressively.  Felt good running this pace and ran the last couple of miles at what was probably tempo pace.  Ran the last half in 43:07 (7:15 pace) which I felt pretty good about over the hilly course.

Now I wish I hadn't read your blog as I just lost all my job/work motivation thinking about running Diamond Head.

Nice job being so consistent with the running despite lots of travel. Do you always have to travel as much as you have lately? That can surely make it tough to get into a good training rhythm, but you seem to have found a way to get it done.

Nice work Jeff! Looks like you mapped out the course well. Also very good pickup the last half. Progressive runs will teach your body to supply energy stored in the muscle. Going aerobic to almost anaerobic is a good way to build endurance and speed.

Are you there on business?

From JimF on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 13:12:07

Tom, definitely a lot more travel than normal. I work for a govt contractor so this is busy time of the year as the govt is wrapping up their fiscal year. Traveling alot this time of year is not the best for marathon training but at least I get to run in some cool locations.

Kory, yes it is business. I am only out here for two days so most of the week will be flying to/from. Thanks for the info on the progression runs. Still not feeling the speed but hopefully it will come.

Your speed will come just keep building that endurance which will change your fitness level to a higher degree.

I wish I could be where you are :-)

Nice run! Way to keep consistent admist the travel.

Nice run! You have been running very well lately and I agree with Kory that these types of runs will pay off for you.

I love the loop around Diamond Head and back down into Honolulu. I liked running up the backside and down around the front for the better view as you come up over the rise where the surfers are down below you!

Have a safe (and fun) business trip...not a bad place to "have" to go.
