I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:
10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger
It's a tough scale. Short-Term Running Goals:
-
Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
-
Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.
Long-Term Running Goals:
- Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
- Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
- Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
- Be a competitive Master's runner
Personal: Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.
Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism. Favorite Blogs: |

This was a great way to stay motivated and get out there and bring the new year in right. It was a little cold but not as bad as it has been and no ice on the roads so good. I enjoyed running clockwise around Sugarhouse park, I held back the first lap and then started to go hard with a couple guys, passing them after the 2nd mile, I was trying to catch a girl in a flat head hat but as we did the 200 yard jog inside the dead end street in the middle of the park, she kept her pace and caught a young kid in orange, I couldn't catch them and in fact was passed by one of the guys I had passed before but I felt I finished strong and enjoyed the race. Brought the new year in by sitting on a bench and watching fireworks and praying for a good year.

Just doing of Long Slow Distance to get in shape for the Winter Circuit. Playing basketball too, as much as that may be leg strengthening, it also takes a little out of the body, but I'm definitely feeling back in shape after dropping 20 pounds and running since Thanksgiving last.

Nice simple course and lovely race from Saltair out and back. Ran easy til 1/2 mile when Bill Cobler passed me and I took a gut check and went with him. 6:06 thru 1 mile and I was surprised how easy it felt. Passed Bill and others and was in no man's land until turnaround whereupon passed older hard-breathing 50s guy. Had my sights on 2 girls, guy in black and close by bald guy in white. James in black?, Reese in white and Laurie. I passed Reese but with 1/4 mile to go he passed me. I had said we should work to catch Laurie and he did, I was passed by Nate but I outsprinted him and Laurie. 12:19 mile 2 and good finish.

| I was generally disappointed with this race since my 5K time reflected I should have run faster but taking into consideration how hard I had to work the week before, the diminished sleep all week and my mileage not being increased I shouldn't feel too badly. I ran the last half 30 seconds faster than the first and I had a really good time going back and forth with Josh Thompson who caught me at mile 2 and we traded back and forth all the way thru 3/4 mile to go when he paced me, encouraged me and then left me behind, I loved it. I just couldn't push myself like I wanted to. This was a race of truth about my training, preparation and mindset and I'm glad to move forward to the 15K where I can push through. |

Ran out and got into no-man's land w/ Micheal fairly quickly, stuck with him through 3 miles, then picked it up to stick with Jules and Chelsea, picked it up on the way back right into the teeth of the wind. Should have probably stayed w/ someone to break the wind but I stayed on pace with Cobler until the last 2 miles, got lactic acid build-up, was passed in the last mile by Micheal, then Nate M, leg tattoos. Felt like I pushed myself and it was good. |

Just wanted to get a workout in. Ran a 1K with Phineas but he wasn't feeling well and complained the whole way and started his illustrious running career off with a last place.
I ran a good race, what I wanted as a rec runner at the moment, with slowly passing people through the first loop and then I wasn't convinced that the race directors didn't mess up the course so I impolitely yelled at the people directing, "This isn't a 5K!" But we did make our way around the 2nd time so I apologized. I was trying to catch 3 guys who were ahead, we entered walking nation the 2nd time through and I closed until we came close to the finish. I wasn't sure if we'd have to do the 2nd smaller loop around the softball field and we didn't. I had passed one guy before the turn but we were all sprinting to the finish, the 2 guys ahead of me closed surprisingly well and I was just glad to be sprinting. The guy in gray I had passed tied me right at the line and then when we were writing out times down he told me his time so I duplicated it. I was 3rd in my 30-39 age group with Nate being 1st overall in 16:44 and in our age group. All we got was a piece of paper but the whole fam was there, 13 overall, including Paul, Amber, E* and B & P. They had a nice French toast breakfast too. |

Just had to get out for this race even though I was only running for 3 days after recovering from a shin splint brought on by carrying my 3 year old on a short hike that turned into a 3 hour trek. I also continued running instead of resting. But live and not learn, there's always a new injury around the corner. I'm not really pessimistic, just the brilliance of running.
So I started the race about 10 rows back and didn't think there'd be that many slower runners and kids near the front. Had to dodge them for 100 yards until i got to the far right side of the road and freedom. First uphill mile is always good to keep you honest, I heard Teren did it in 4:50, making sure he stamped his 10th straight win. Ran my 1st mile in 7:09, was catching up to people, Doug and Mel. Saw the top guys already with gaps between them, then a larger gap and Nate leading another guy. Levi right in there, awesome, he ended up beating 2 Bingham guys and was 11th. Hope I can get back to his speed.
I passed Carol after the turnaround and picked up my effort, and my pace, which dropped to 6:40 for the 2nd downhill mile, 13:50 at 2M. Picked up a guy that didn't want to be passed and we ran together going up to the street turn in. I told him we'll cruise up the hill and then we'll pass people. One guy ahead of me must have heard because we didn't catch him. I actually dropped my friend as I tried to pick it up, I guess I passed a few on the road, two on the downhill, then I seemed to cruise until I maybe passed one before the 3 mile mark, I was planning to sprint in but had a laughable close. |

Did the stupid thing and was a few rows back because I love to dodge the kids. Passed some SLC guys, Doug, and then Mel early in the 1st half mile. Latched on to a good pacer thru the 1st mile. I told him we'd turn the corner and then bridge the gap. We got passed by a younger buff guy and I went with him and dropped my pacer. Loving the downhill I could see the stretch of tantalizing women ahead of me. Slowly picked them off, Kiley and Emily and Michelle and then finally the last uphill mile Abigail. Sprinted with 2 high school boys at the end outkicking one. Should be happy with this effort but it always hurts. Felt like it boded well for Des News but there I just couldn't get my engines revved. Keep pushing. |

| Got passed a lot before started to pass people on N. Temple, but didn't pass as many as passed me. Took a different turn but we made up the block, glad to not have cut the race short like others complained about. Last 2 miles are hard, felt like I couldn't quite rev the engines but I guess I should be happy considering my 5K days earlier and the time. Kudos to all who beat me, even if you ran short. |
