Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in  2025.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

17 degrees this morning, did not feel like going outside or to the gym.  5 miles in cool but sunny and calm weather. (Guide Blue)

4 miles after work with Moxie in nice weather before Men's group, continued efforts to work off stress. (Fastwitch White)

With this run, I have reach 50,000 miles for my lifetime.  This includes years 2000-2004 where I estimated 3,000 based on paper logs, and 47,000 in just under 15 years (>3,130 miles/year average during this period from 2005 to 2019).   Before this period I was primarily a tennis player and weight lifter...big life change (Lots of miles on the tennis court not included in the total above).

Congrats, Jeff. I'm curious to know what led to the big life change? Did you just want to try something different? Do you still play any tennis?

A few aspects of the change in my athletic focus. First to tennis…I had played competitive through High school and college and then into my early adult life on USTA club teams, making it to regional championships. Once kids came along, tennis took time away from family as the only time I could play was in the evenings/weekends and at least 3-4 times a week to even stay proficient. Additionally, the team captains and environment was getting toxic and nasty competitive and taking the fun away from the game from most of the players. At the same time since college I focused heavily on weight training and trying to “get big”. I got stronger and bigger but not really fitter and was growing my waistsize.

We bought a treadmill after our first child for my wife to use when she got pregnant again (the NordicTrack is not good for a pregnant belly). I started using it then some work friends asked me to join them a couple days a week at lunch. I started to like running. A friend at work ran the Pocatello Marathon and I started reading Runner’s World magazine and committed to my first marathon in 2005. I was hooked as I was more personally fulfilled with the competition and challenge of runner, the environment and other participant’s and the mental and physical changes (fitness) I gained in running.

As to tennis now, I still like the sport and have enjoyed watching it and plan to get back to playing probably more in retirement. I have not really played in years at do miss it at times, but not enough to stop running in exchange for the time commitment.

Moxie's lifetime miles are also pretty impressive :-)

Yeah, she will hit 9000 in a little over 9 years. She loves to run and gets mad when I do not take her, she knows when I am getting ready and gets really excited to go out.
