"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Definition # 373 for IRONY: having piles of time all Winter long to run in sub-freezing weather, but when the first mid-winter 60F degree days come, being too busy with work to get out on a run.

10.5 miles / Easy commute run home the majority of which was into the wind. Mostly sun, 58F. First run in months with short sleeves, no gloves, and no hat or cap. Felt a little weird the first couple of miles.

12.2 miles / 8:34 avg. From work. Mostly sunny, temps in the mid 30's. I've been really dragging lately, and today was no exception. I've been battling some weird cold for the last month. It doesn't ever seem to completely go away, and I've felt run down. I was hoping that with the light mileage during the last week or so I would be up for a good workout. I tried today but never really felt any smoothness or got into a good place. My right piriformis (?) has been nagging at me over the last year but really started to be a hindrance on todays run. It felt worse during my slow miles.

Anyway, my small workout went like this: 3 mile warm up then 3 x 1 mile @ HM pace (7:34, 7:50, 7:53). 1 mile rest, then 2 x 1 mile @ HM pace (7:53, 7:55). 1 mile rest, then 1 mile @ HM pace (8:00). 1 mile cool down. As you can see, my intervals just got slower and slower as I just felt worse as the run continued. My rest miles were much slower than usual. Just didn't have it today so this makes me extra glad that I put some effort into the run. Made for good practice trying to push through discomfort.

am - 7.3 miles / 11:32 avg. BST going North form the Kaysville Wilderness Park. Mostly cloudy, temps in the mid 40's. Great trail run to give my feet, legs, hips, and mind a break from the Winter roads. Dynamic trail conditions with soft packed snow, some mud, some dry rocky sections, and choppy ice in the canyon bottoms. Good debut for the new shoes. These are the first heavy shoes I've run in for a couple of years. I got them just for conditions like these. My minimal MT101's are great trail shoes, but better suited to dry trails. I thought these Montrails might be good for the 50 miler in March, depending on conditions come race day.

pm - 6 miles / 8:18 avg. In the dark on the Mystery Field Track with young dog under starry skies and temps in the low 40's. Unintentional progression run. Splits: 8:38, 8:25, 8:18, 8:16, 8:08, 8:06.
