"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Race: Ogden Marathon (26.44 Miles) 03:51:25
Total Distance
26.44

Garmin had me at 3:51:38 for 26.44 miles. (Official time: 3:51:25).  I'm disappointed that I didn't get the 3:45 I was looking for today. But I am happy with a 14 minute PR. I continue to get faster with age! My excuse for being off pace today is that my right IT band started flaring up around mile 8, and continued to get worse as the miles went by. Frustrating because it's been almost a year since I last had any ITB issues. Maybe the cut back in miles over the last three weeks caused it? I don't know. I was hoping that it would remedy itself by the time I got to the drop off point at the top of the canyon around mile 17, then I could make up some time on the downhill. But it just got worse. Still, getting through and finishing was as big a victory for me today as a 3:45 would have been. Maybe more so. Around mile twelve I briefly considered the possibility of getting my first DNF as I just couldn't get my mind around another 13 miles with the pain. I adjusted my form/stride to try and alleviate the situation, and that seemed to help. But the new, wacky form took it's toll on other parts of my body; by the time I got out of the canyon I was cramping all over. A major highlight of the race for me was around mile 22 where Allie Scott had made signs on bright poster boards for each of the FRB'ers running Ogden today. I saw this big yellow sign that said "JD" on it. I was so out of it, I had forgotten Allie was doing this and I thought to myself "hmm, what a coincidence, I'm JD too." As I got closer I saw Allie just in time to put the pieces together and swing over to say thanks and give her a high 5. A much needed boost. Thanks Allie!

My splits ranged from 8:15 to 9:00 mpm, except the last two miles, which were 10:22 and 10:00. Would I have made my goal of 3:45 today if not for the ITB issue? I don't know. I do know that my lungs and breathing felt great. I could feel that energy that I do during a good workout. Maybe if I wasn't in pain I would've gone out too hard the first 18 miles and then blown up for the remaining 8 (like I did at TOU last Fall). It doesn't matter. Race day is all about what the day brings. During those last couple of miles I swore that I would never run another marathon. Now, a few hours later, I'm trying to decide on a Fall marathon so I can torture myself again. WHY? WHY DO WE DO IT?

Congratulations to all the runners out there today!

HOORAY!!! You did it!!! Congratulations! I'm so sorry to hear about your ITB! That really stinks, but I love your ever-continuing positive attitude. It was fun to read this, and Im so happy Allie was there to give you that boost. It's amazing what just a little sign will do for you. That stinks about all of your cramping, but CONGRATULATIONS on a HUGE PR!! You did Amazing! So happy for you. As for why we do it? well, we all know the answer to that never-changing question in a runners head. And as far as which one to do this fall?? TOU Of Course!!!

From Kelli on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 17:53:58 from 71.219.75.178

That is an awesome PR!!! I am so sorry about the IT band issues, that can really throw a race off. I am amazed you were able to run through that pain.

I am not sure WHY we do it, we do seem to forget fast. The accomplishment of the entire thing masks the pain.

From Andy on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 18:02:02 from 198.60.114.178

Great job JD. A 14 minute PR is quite an accomplishment.

From Tracy on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 18:06:24 from 173.23.75.96

That's a pretty big PR! I like all the positives that you had in this race, and even though you're disappointed with your time, I still think that's one great race!

I also like the fact that you're already hungry for another one!

From Snoqualmie on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 19:57:35 from 24.18.192.33

Whoa! a 3:51 and a 14 minute PR with crampy legs! Awesome accomplishment! I'm so sorry the fun-o-meter got sabotaged, but you know deep down how fun this is, RIGHT???

I loved the part about thinking, "hey, I'm JD too." Marathon brain!

Enjoy your recovery-- and all the free eating!

So exciting about your HUGE PR! And, of course, your strong mental attitude getting through the pain and finishing with the ITB stuff. So weird that that would happen on race day ! Congratulations, JD! Take care of the leg, and enjoy the relaxation. Job well done.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 20:46:01 from 24.8.167.243

Congratulations on the PR and on finishing when you felt like you wanted to quit at one point. I'm sorry about the ITB pain. I'm sure you would have easily got 3:45 or better if you hadn't had the pain.

From crockett on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 21:19:32 from 71.36.64.205

Nice job, great leap in PR. You do huge minutes improvements and I do measly seconds improvement. Fill good about the progress. Solve and rest that ITB. Tough to beat. Huge congrats!

14 minute PR is awesome! And I totally can relate to you. I missed my goal by 2-3 minutes b/c of my ITB..Frustrating!!!

JD -- what an amazing run! You showed your true metal in this race. The fact that you got a 14 min pr is incredible, that is so huge!! Now you need to buy a foam roller, take a couple down weeks and then get excited for the next goal! Congratulations!

From Metcalf Running on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 10:52:51 from 207.225.192.66

Great job JD. Not bad for a Beatles fan.

From JD on Tue, May 18, 2010 at 17:20:36 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks all! If I can take 15 minutes off each marathon I run, I should be able to go sub 3:30 in early 2011! Lol!

From c h a d on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 20:29:58 from 67.42.252.25

You should be proud of this race, JD! Running through IB pain is no easy thing. I bet it was the taper.
