"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

2:30 PM...98 degrees...stiff South wind...cattle road/bird refuge...10.1 miles...9:48 avg...

The thermometer on the jeep read 100 degrees when I got to where I park on the cattle road to start my run. I'm calling it 98 degrees because it makes all the difference in the world. It was hot. The five miles out were into a pretty good wind. Also, the first 1.5 miles I was lugging along a half gallon jug of water to cache out by the refuge gate. Running with that bottle sucked more than I thought it would. It felt so good to drop it off. I also had my 12 oz. hand held with me. The s-caps I've been experimenting with don't seem to do a thing for me? Anybody have any experience with s-caps? Still, I like running in the heat, and the wind cooled me off a little. I was hoping to go further today, but for a number of reasons I was really dragging so I cut it short.

i've never tried s-caps, so no opinion from me. nice run out in this heat. very smart to have lots of water.

Brain cannot compute data.

I like the Saltstick caps, which I think are similar. But really, when it's hot, it's miserable. Degrees of misery, that's all it is for me. (lol - I'm talking 70s.)

you are crazy and awesome to run ten miles at 2:30 in the afternoon. What is an S-cap? Any particular reason why you chose to do that in the middle of the afternoon?

From KP on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 09:47:20 from 65.208.22.25

are you saying you didn't see any effects from the s-caps, good or bad? i think you need to do a few more miles before you start to notice. (that is just my opinion though). i don't worry about my salt on anything under a half-marathon distance. the only time i've ever had cramping issues was on a trail race that was about 14.5 miles long. the last .5 my calves cramped and i thought i was going to die! but, i also didn't eat a thing before or during the race and only drank about 1/2 of my handheld bottle (that was just water) the whole 3+ hours. i am not the best at nutrition/hydration while running... so really, just ignore this paragraph.

What is an s cap? Nice hot run, JD. Wish we'd get some of that heat up here. It is almost snowing here I think.

Yuck. sounds hard core JD. I don't take S-caps, but I do use the electrolyte sports drink that is made by the people who make Emergen-C (it is completely sugar/carb free). I use it before and after any run longer than 8 miles in the summer. I usually don't drink or eat anything on runs shorter than about 10 miles, but it can be uncomfortable sometimes in the middle of the summer ...

From JD on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 12:09:26 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks. All good points. I usually try to keep drinking eating to a minimum while running, but with the heat in the summer I'm extra careful about the water. (This past winter I ran a couple of 15 milers with no aid). I guess I just wanted to try some s-caps generally to see if they had any adverse effects, which they did not. I'm hoping to run a couple of 30 milers later this summer and I guess the salt will have more utility in those situations. I've realized that a big obstacle to my performance on long runs is that my legs start cramping up. I always just thought it was normal fatigue. I think better fitness will help alleviate the problem, and I've read about a lot of runners having some success with manipulating there diets/intake during long runs. I want to start running ultras in a couple of years, so I'm going to be trying lots of different things to see what works for me.

Nice job in the heat.

98 degress? I would lie to myself and say it was 79 degrees...anything hotter and I melt into sludge

From JD on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 15:02:23 from 70.96.78.157

Lol April. It was like running in sludge!

From KP on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 15:06:09 from 65.208.22.25

s-caps are pretty much a staple of any ultrarunners diet while out on the trail. i've definitely used them on some longer runs and do think they help. my friends that do the long stuff a lot more often than me pop about 1 an hour in the heat if it is going to be a long day.

i do have one friend that says they upset her stomach. she thinks it is the potassium in them so she eats straight salt instead. ick!

if you want more feedback from a regular user, i know nevels is a fan. you might ask him if he has any advice.

This is all very interesting, and timely - I just learned today that one of the mystery ingredients in my Nuuns is actually aspartame. No more Nuuns for me. :(

I just want to add that there may be a what-temps-you're-used-to factor here as well. I do better with electrolytes on long runs or any temps over 60 degrees. By the end of our short summer I can push that up to 65.
