8.2 miles. Warm up 3.1 miles (9:05 avg). Race 3.86 miles (7:14 avg). Cool down 1.24 miles (9:17 avg). Met Chad at his house and we ran from there to the race for warm up. Ran into AdamRW and ran part of the warm up with him. Again, me, running with these elite guys (Chad and Adam). For some reason I had it in my head that this was a 5K. I had a full bladder at the start, awesome. The course started by the capitol, on gravity hill, and took us into City creek canyon before turning us around at 1.77 miles. So the first 1.77 miles were uphill. Some of that hill was steep. But then it was all downhill to the finish. Fun. At 5K I thought, "hmm, the course is long" at about 3.6 miles I thought "hmm, guess this is a 4 miler". When I saw the finish line was near and I was at 3.83 miles I thought "hmm, I've sure been wrong a lot this morning." Anyway, the footsteps that I heard pursuing me most of the last mile were from a jolly gentleman who informed at the finish line that the race was a 6K. My overall average pace for the race was 7:14 per mile. The 5K I ran a couple of weeks ago was a PR at 7:18 per mile. So I feel okay about today's effort.
Splits: 7:41, 7:57, 6:43, 5:36 for .86 mile (6:31 pace).
It's interesting that I went out the other day and ran a flat mile at 6:37, and today, with a big assist from gravity, in a race environment, I run basically the same speed...one would assume that I could run all out downhill faster than on a flat surface. Apparently not. Don't see how I'm ever going to get that sub six mile...
Happy Thanksgiving!
