"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Race: Ogden Half Marathon (13.2 Miles) 01:48:42, Place overall: 291, Place in age division: 24
Total Distance
13.20

My alarm went off at 3:00 AM. I got about 4 hours of broken sleep but I felt fine because it was race day and I had no choice but to get moving. NOW I'm tired! Anyway, met my sis in law at her house and she drove us to Ogden. This was her first half and she did really good. I left her at about the halfway point and she maintained the pace we had been running the whole way through. Her time was 1:52:30-ish.  The busses got us to the starting line with more than an hour and a half till starting time. I think next time I'll bring a throw away camp chair so I can take a nap while waiting. What a beautiful morning in Eden! I think that's the town where the race started.

My time of 1:48:41 is based on my Garmin, which showed a distance of 13.2 miles. I'll post my official/chip time when it becomes available.

Mile 1 - 8:54 -  Pretty slow, but I wanted to be extra cautious, and this is where the only real hill is, and the first mile was my warm up. I started in about the right place because I just slowly passed people, pretty much throughout the race.

Mile 2 - 8:37 - getting warmer. I shed my winter hat at this point.

Mile 3 - 8:18 - This is about what I needed to average for the run to reach my goal of breaking 1:50 for the half, so I knew I needed to make up some time. No big deal, I had 10 miles left to make it up.

Mile 4 - 8:19 - Shed the gloves at this point. I think we entered the canyon somewhere in this mile. So far so good.

Mile 5 - 7:58 - Yep, we're in the canyon now, good downhill action, and a friendly tailwind to boot.

Mile 6 - 8:21 - I am being extra cautious in this race. I have a fear of going out too fast and blowing up at the end. I just want to make my goal and feel good throughout the entire run. So far, I've not forced my pace at all and am just kind of rolling down the hill. I had been running with sis in law up until this point. I felt pretty comfortable and starting thinking about the time I still needed to make up to reach my goal so I picked it up a little.

Mile 7 - 7:53 - Gravity assist.

Mile 8 - 8:00 - I like mile 8 because that leaves only 5 miles and it's easy to wrap my feeble little mind around that.

Mile 9 - 8:04 - Just comfortably moving along. Leap frogging with the same 4 or 5 runners at this point.

Mile 10 - 8:03 - Passing some runners now. I do feel a little worked as this is the fastest 10 miler I've ever done at 1:22:27. No worries, I've got some mileage base to lean on. In the past this wasn't the case, I'd be running slower and would be derailing by now.

Mile 11 - 8:04 - Such a beautiful canyon and morning!

Mile 12 - 8:22 - Gee, do you think we're out of the canyon and running on the flat part of the course now? How could you tell? I kind of enjoyed this section on the parkway, it was a nice change, and I could hear the crowds in town at this point.

Mile 13 - 8:16 - Even though the race was almost done, I didn't push too hard. I knew I had my goal and was just trying to stay even and soak in the crowd atmosphere a little.

.2 Mile - 1:33 (7:42 pace) - a little kick right at the finish.

What a great course and well organized event. I can see why it sold out so quick this year.

Well. I have to say that I'm not a fast runner, but this really is a great improvement over my "past" running life. Fast running blog has made a huge difference in the way I currently train and think about running in general. THANKS FAST RUNNING BLOG! Thanks to all of you readers and bloggers.

Now with the half behind me, I'm looking forward to training for the TOU Marathon this Fall.

Great job, JD! I wish I had seen you. I was so just trying to get to the finish line, that I didn't really see who was along the sides.

You had a great race and that's a great time. You beat my Canyonlands half time. You're going to do a great job at Top of Utah, you mileage junky.

From Snoqualmie on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 21:59:41 from 67.171.56.164

You did it!! Watching your training, I knew you would break 1:50 but I didn't want to say so - no jinxing. :) I'm so happy for you. Congratulations!!

From Kelli on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 23:20:00 from 71.219.69.233

Yeah, JD! You beat your goal and you were super smart about it. That is how a REAL runner runs a race. Now, about the feeble mind----there is no point where I feel that way, not even the last .2 or .1 or whatever. Maybe I should bike?

Anyway, you did great and you are fast and getting faster and smart and getting smarter!

JAMES!!!! THAT IS AWESOME!!!!! 1:48! GOOD JOB! I love your description of it all. I want to feel that way at mile 10. That must feel so good. I havent experienced that high yet, i usually start wanting to cry around mile 11 or 12. Your training was well paid off. Ive been waiting all day for your post, im so glad its finally here!! CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT RACE!! now go to bed.

Carolyn - Thanks. I'm still so impressed by your first marathon performance!

Snoqualmie - Thanks for knowing I would do it...I wasn't sure, but the training is working I guess.

Thanks Kelli - You rocked the marathon! (of course). I don't know how you do it, especially given the sleep issues lately. Great job!

Lysa - Thanks. It does feel good to feel good at 10 miles, as I'm sure you'll soon discover.

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:06:22 from 71.219.69.233

Honestly, I have been sleep deprived since I gave birth to my first child 16 years ago! It just gets really hard when you are marathon training at 4:30 am, that is when I feel it. Actually, for the first time ever I got a few hours of sleep the night before. Maybe that is the trick!

Now, for a break! Are you gonna take a break? You run so many miles every week, you have earned it. Plus those lunch time runs are gonna be HOT from here on out!!

From JD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:48:55 from 166.128.146.200

When we're children we can sleep all we want, but we won't. When we're adults we want to sleep more, but we can't.

Not really taking a break. I did run just a half-marathon and I feel fine. I took Friday off and I'm taking today (Sunday) off, so that's a mini break. I'm looking forward to the next training cycle.

Morning runs...yay!

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:50:35 from 71.219.69.233

The marathon is next, right?

From JD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:54:00 from 166.128.146.200

Yeah, not until Sept. though. I really am just beginning to run, building a mileage base. August will be one year of consistent running. Yesterdays half, and Septembers marathon will be reasonable PR's for me to beat over the next few years as I get stronger.

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:54:58 from 71.219.69.233

Plenty of time to train, then! What are your goals for TOU, or are you still undecided?

From JD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:58:08 from 166.128.146.200

Thanks for asking Kelli, you're great. I'm hoping to break 3:45 in the marathon. In 2010, my goal is to beat you in the marathon! :-)

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 19:01:19 from 71.219.69.233

Good deal. I will cheer you on as you beat me!

My first marathon was TOU 2007. I finished in 3:56, so you will beat that! My 2nd was St George 2008 and I shaved off 18 minutes. Yesterday was the third and I shaved off another 12 minutes. Do you think I can keep that up? I will be in the Olympics before we know it!

From Snoqualmie on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 19:28:00 from 67.171.56.164

Hi JD - bunch o questions: have you run TOU before? was the altitude noticeable? do you live at altitude? what are you having for dinner? j/k on the last. Unless it's interesting.

From JD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 19:34:20 from 166.128.146.200

Snoqualmie you're funny! I've run 3 marathons, they were all at St. George. The last one was 6 years ago. I live at 4300 ft. so no issues with altitude for TOU. I had a frozen pizza...it was some kind of spicy chicken. I was sweating like crazy from eating. James likes his chicken spicy!

You're running Seattle R&R in just a few weeks aren't you? All these marathons! You're strong!!

From JD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:38:20 from 166.128.146.200

Kelli - I really don't think I'll catch you at the rate you're improving. Your next marathon will probably be sub 3:20. I hope to break 3:30 someday, but I'm aging rapidly!

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:47:22 from 71.219.69.233

Wait, don't we get faster as we age?

And, BTW, pizza is the best night before the race meal!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:53:48 from 71.229.164.25

So, JD, your goal for this year is to beat me in the marathon, eh? I just may have to come do TOU and see about that.

From JD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 21:51:51 from 166.128.80.136

Kelli - we get faster as we age up to a point, then we slow down. I'm long past the peak, but since I've never really run before, I've got nothing but PR's ahead of me.

Carolyn - I would be honored if you would pace me in a marathon some day!
