"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Mountain run.

First test to see if my body will allow me to do some ultras in the next year or two After a three day rest following some dental work, I figured it was a good time to try for something a little longer.  7:00 AM. Ran from my house to Francis Peak (radar towers @  9500+ ft) and back. Temps 70 degrees to 85 F by the time I got back. Carried 70 oz's of water in a camelback, 4 Gu's and a 5 oz flask of EFS (Product out of Salt lake City), this little flask packed 400 calories and 100 g's of carbohydrates. The fueling experiment continues. I ate gu at miles 6 and 8. At mile 10 I started on the EFS and consumed that over the next 3 miles. Then gu at miles 18 and 22. I maybe could have used more calories and or/electrolytes as I started cramping up (as usual ) around mile 22. My left ITB flared up and I ended up walking much of the last 4 miles. Very frustrating because I felt really good on the climb up and most of the way back. Just to have the whole run shot down in the last 4 miles! My water supply would have been adequate if not for the additional time it took to finish with the walking. I ran out of water around mile 24. When I got back home I felt probably the most uncomfortable I have ever felt after a run. It took like 20 minutes just to feel like I could think straight again. Anyway. I'm thinking I need to carry some solid foods with me on the extended runs?

Home to Francis Peak / 13.53 miles / 3:04:46 / 13:38 per mile avg.

Francis Peak to home / 13.52 miles / 2:33:36 / 11:23 avg

Total run 27.05 miles / 5:38:23 / 12:30 avg.

6116 ft up / 6106 ft down.

Some notes: Very little traffic going up this morning, heavy traffic coming down (ATV's, motorcycles, etc).

The view from the top almost knocked me off my feet. Especially looking over into Morgan county. The view goes on forever with endless hazy mountain ranges in the distance into Wyoming.

Horseflies like sun. As I was coming down the canyon, I had my own personal entourage of a dozen or so flies buzzing me from all directions, for miles. Only got bit once though.

Shiny, white, dome shaped radar towers have magnetic qualities which can literally pull you up a steep mountain against your better judgment.

great run. smart to experiment with different fueling strategies. maybe next time you could carry a giant can of kidney beans?

feeling recovered from the dentist?

From JD on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 16:37:09 from 32.176.104.132

Thanks Allie. You're a hoot!

I feel recovered, mostly the soft tissue that once surrounded a pair of teeth feels recovered.

Bravo on a very tough run! You'll figure out the hydration/fuel system soon, and then you'll be unstoppable!

From auntieem on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 17:07:46 from 24.18.77.246

Wow! Dude, you are incredible. 27 miels! This sounds weird, but on my longer training runs for the 5K, I used Pay Day candy bars, cut up into bites. Worked good. I also carried a GU.

From Jon on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 18:21:36 from 75.169.156.117

Have you tried S-caps? More sodium might help prevent cramping.

From JD on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 18:38:41 from 32.176.104.132

Thanks Sno - I just wish I could pull out a long run every week the way you do.

Auntieem - do you use a fork to eat your candy bar? (Like George on Seinfeld - lol).

Jon - I tried S-caps on a twenty miler a couple of weeks ago. I might not have been using them correctly as I didn't notice any benefit. It could be that they were unnecessary for 20 miles. I'm going to get more and read up on the best way to use them. Do you use them, have they helped?

From jun on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 20:51:47 from 97.126.224.130

I live and die my S-Caps. I take one about 45 min to an hour into my run. Then, I take two the next hour, one the next, then two, etc. I can't remember the last time I had any real problems with cramping.

It also does sound like you need to up your calorie intake. Generally, its pretty good to ingest about 250 - 300 per hour. I tend to take about 200 - 250 and I know I need to be better at adding more. Just some thoughts.

From JD on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 21:01:37 from 166.128.177.235

Thanks for the input Jun - do you get all those calories from gu's or what?

From jun on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 21:03:24 from 97.126.224.130

I eat a gel every 45 min. Generally, no. I like to take along beef jerky (the bite size chunks are the best and easiest) and granola as well. Substance is good.

From JD on Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 21:07:49 from 166.128.177.235

Substance is good. I like that. I was intuitively feeling that way today, like a burger or something might have helped a lot.

From april27 on Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 09:08:54 from 99.188.251.180

I think it was also good that the weather on your side. NOt that 70-85 is cool bt it is a lot better than 90! Ewwww

I think this run should encourage you as far as doing ultras! You did really well!

From Lysa on Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 09:27:53 from 174.52.18.143

Wow JD! That sounds totally intense! Nice job doing that distance even if you feel it did end badly. That is amazing. Live and Learn right? You will do better in the end next time. You are a stallion

From JD on Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 11:41:20 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks April and Lysa. My report comes off sounding negative, but I actually feel really good about the run. Anytime I can get out and run for 5 1/2 hours in the mountains is a great day.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 13, 2010 at 10:10:08 from 24.8.167.243

That's freakin' awesome, JD. I am impressed.

From JD on Tue, Jul 13, 2010 at 12:13:15 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Carolyn - My wife happened to be out in the yard as I hobbled my way towards the house at the end of the run...she didn't seem too impressed. In fact, it's the first time I've seen true pity in her eyes as she looked at me. Lol!

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 13, 2010 at 18:40:33 from 71.219.99.30

HOLY CRUD!!!! Amazing run. It sounds to me that you just need a few tweaks here and there and you will KILL this mountain the next time you try it!

The S-caps have done nothing for my husband as well. I think he even borders on taking too many! What is the other stuff you were taking? Is it an electrolyte type thing?

Now, for the food. I find that Swedish Fish give me a nice little kick! Nothing beats sugar.

GREAT JOB! I hope once you hobbled home you got some good food and rest in ya!

From JD on Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 21:43:42 from 166.183.15.116

Thanks Kelli. I think EFS stands for "electrolyte fueling system"? I tried it for two reasons, they are a local company, and the product squeezed in a lot of calories and carbs (and electrolytes?) for such a small, easy to carry flask.

Looks like your PF issue is heading in the right direction after todays TM run. (11mph!).

From Kelli on Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 23:26:59 from 71.219.99.30

Seriously, you need to hop on a TM and give it a try. It was unreal and flippin' scary!

I like LOCAL, it means we can get a bunch of it.
