Lunch: Springside Track - 10.5 miles total w/ 8 x 600 w/ 200 meter jogs avg 2:04.6

Decent workout today. I've never done 600s but it was a recommendation from Coach Krong for 10k training. Megan is gone to a conference, and I had to take Oliver to the vet so I wasn't able to get out when I got up. Air was nice and dry but it was still around 80, but it wasn't too bad. Warmed up 3.5 with some on/off 200s at a tame pace to get the legs moving, some half-hearted drills, and a few strides. The pace (5:30-5:35) felt very hard today. Two weeks or so ago 5:25-5:28 pace for 1000m felt hard but managable. The recovery jogs were admittedly very slow and even had to walk a few paces in the last half.

My 5 mile race a week from Saturday will tell me what I can do at Beach to Beacon. Right now a PR is the goal. I'm off from my sub-35 goal unless some magic happens and I run under 28:30 for the 5-miler.

PM: Exploring - 4.5 miles, averaged 8:07. Checked out a tempo loop I marked out a few months ago. Way too hilly. I'm not that much of a beast. Guess the cemetery is my only option, which is fine.

i'm a fan of half-hearted drills.

nice job with the workout. i have never done a 600, but i imagine it probably feels like a slightly-less-miserable-than-normal 400 followed by a miserable 200...a 5k/10k strength builder for sure.

I agree - 600s are kinda tricky. I wouldn't put too much stock in how u felt with such an awkward distance/workout.

Your training recently has been phenomenal, Jason - I have no doubt that you will knock these 2 upcoming races out of the park.

600s should be called something like "weird 400s." My spike in mileage to get back on track from two low weeks and dehydration is likely weighing me down. Beach to Beacon starts my 16 week buildup starts on Aug 2 for my key 10k. I've probably never gone into a buildup with my current level of fitness. Can't complain really.

I have some friends that are probably getting married in Maine next year, so I already pitched the idea that they should coordinate the wedding with Beach to Beacon.

Yes, that's the other thing I was thinking. 6 x 800 would have been double with 400 recovery at tgat pace. I hate 800s though, which means I should run them more. I'm getting some decent hill training every way I turn. No more 75-100 foot gain runs for 6-10 miles.

Beach to Beacon will be on my list every year despite not having a great race last year (not the race's fault). I'm going to run by Shalane while she's doing strides this year. I had to jump out of the way last year because I almost went head on into Gemma Steal. It would be a fast course for you. The hills really aren't hills. Maybe a 10 second loss for me last year and I almost walked off at mile 2.

In college (at a time when none of us probably even had girlfriends) my friends and I put together a plan for a wedding morning race. The deal was everyone threw in $50, and you'd race a 5K teamed up WITH your date. Lowest combined timed took home the jackpot. This led to many hypothetical conversations about whether you'd show up with Rachel Bilson (remember, this was during the peaks years of The OC) and sacrifice the race, or recruit someone like a Dibaba sister to go with you. Long story short, there have only been two weddings out of the group (thank goodness, who has time for more than one every couple years!?!), but I think Beach to Beacon 2015 would be the perfect opportunity to finally make that dream a reality. ESPECIALLY since the hills aren't that bad and there is also ziti on the line. I'll alert the bride to be.
