Got my MRI results back after having a fun time with the campus health center.

It seems I have inherited my father's defective hip joint(s) (don't tell him that; he will think it is his fault and that he ruined my running "career"). I have a cam-type infringement, which means my femoral head doesn't fit neatly in the socket and there's some pinching that is causing the pain. The bad news is it is congenital; the good news is it is cogential--nothing new, but the problem was always a potential, hiding and waiting.

The trainer said to knock myself out running if I wished. If I expeirence pain, I can continue if that is what I want to do (in hindsight, this is not great advice given a hitch in my gait could cause other problems). So I just need to be sensible about my running. Even though it may not be bad exactly, flare ups could lead to downtime, making for inconsitent running. I pushed pretty hard to cross this threshold, so hopefully it takes the same amount to cause it again (which would mean staying under threshold, which is easy to do and I can still excel).

A few ideas: cutback weeks are not optional, no matter how good I feel. Make peace with cross training. Run on the treadmill as necessary. LOTS of hip and glute work (this should go without saying). Be weight conscious, but not obsessive (getting back to the low 160s would mean a lot less force on the joint).

PM: Club Newtone - 6.5 miles in just under 50 minutes, averaged 7:37. Felt really good. Talk to me in the morning though. Walked a mile there, and probably 1.5-2 back. Stopped at Tri-N-Run to get a backup pair of 2XU compression shorts.

Do you really think that is what is causing the pain? I'm just asking b/c you've had that your whole life...has it "flared up" before? My injury never showed up on an MRI and I even had a doctor tell me I needed FAI surgery.

No idea. It sounds common enough and I fit the profile. There's definitely a defect in that joint. Not sure if joint defects are hereditary or not but my father has had both replaced. I actually did have a hip issue July 2011. 10-14 days off. I didn't think it was related until now. It happened after my first half.

I'm going to proceed as if the diagnosis is correct. The sports medicine doctor found the report convincing.

But I've seen doctors grossly misread MRIs as well (we are blinded by specialization).

Thanks! I can't recall the discomfort level from last time. I know it was in the same hip and it wasn't painful, just uncomfortable and unstable.

I hope I'm back to 100% soon too. I get far less done when I'm not running even though it can be an additional 12-13+ hours in peak training.

FAI is such a "trendy" diagnosis so you have to be careful with it. But it sounds like in your case, like Andrea said, it makes a lot of sense.

And look at it this way, your 7:37 pace run was faster than I ran today, so you're probably in 1:04/low 1:05 shape after the time off.

Seems like good news overall (and your run felt good, which is awesome). You will still make good headway on your running with a little cutback - maybe even find it works better.

Those two week off easy runs. Tough to fake :-) I didn't even do a pickup at that pace. I did some .1s at 6:00. Felt like the opening mile of a 5k.

I'm going to keep an eye on it and my options open. Time will tell.

It was helpful Joe. My two weeks post Indy were supposed to be 70 mile weeks. That wouldn't have happened. Probably 80. So, a bit of humbling reality. I was surprised I could make it 50 minutes without dying. 40-50 minutes for a while and go by tolerance. I was a different person today. Megan could hear it on the phone.

Great to see you're getting something figured out. Hopefully you only get a flare up when venturing into uncharted territory. Your body'll adapt.

We're both guilty of neglecting glute work. Be sure to pay when you work on it as a subtle reminder for me. ;) I'll do the same.

I know, Matt. That glute medius pact we made back this summer (woah, strange phrasing, but you know what I mean) didn't take on did it? I do planks and stuff, but this isn't quite enough. Even basic form drills and plyos can be beneficial. I used to do them, but I've gotten lazy.
