AM: Forbidden Drive (SE) - 10.25 miles, averaged 8:06. Did some strides.

PM: Treadmill - 4.5 miles in 34:04. Did 4 x 1 minute on/off @ 10.6-10.8. Funny how 5 x 1 mile around the same pace on the roads somehow feels much easier.

Just read an interesting article about the comparison of perceived and actual effort comparing outdoor running to treadmill running. (There are so many of these articles out there). This one determined that for a number of scientific reasons, that pace on a treadmill is perceived as more difficult than outdoors. You can probably find a bunch of other articles telling you the complete opposite. I think it is an individual thing. I used to hate tm's but I have grown to find them just as useful or even more useful than outdoor running and quite often a good alternative equal to choosing one outdoor route to another. To each his own. However if I had to run on "Forbidden Drive" every day, I think I would choose the 'mill now and then too. :)

I owe a lot to the machine. It really helped me rehab last winter and it is a good alternative to "where am I going to run today?" I just wish I had nicer ones to run on like I had at Purdue, but the fitness center is a really short walk and it's included in rent.

Like Rob I find I can push the easy pace a bit so I don't loaf. I'm sure most of my workouts this winter will be on them. Unless they plow Forbidden Drive. In which case it's screw shoes all the way!

It's a lovely stretch of wide carriage trail. Google it. Got to watch for rocks here and there.
