Another day at the gym on the treadmill.  My annual membership to 24 Hour Fitness is $20 so I figure it costs me at most $.13 per visit (20/150).  There is no way they are making money on me after factoring in the water and electricity I use each visit.  Gyms should really figure out how to send the energy from the stationary bikes to the treadmills.

I run on the treadmills at 24 hour fitness too. You also have to factor in the cost to repair the treadmills after running on them so hard that they start to smoke, or just stop working in the middle of the run. I've broken several. I'm sure that's happened to you, too.

Lucky for us, the hundreds of people who sign up for Gym memberships and never use them pay for us that actually do.

That's funny. How can $20.00 be your annual membership? Did you sign up in 1957?

That broken treadmill second from the end was broken by me. About three weeks ago I ran 13 miles on it - the last 10 in 59 minutes. The last mile it started to smell really bad and then it just stopped about a quarter mile before I wanted to finish. It's been broken ever since. So, if you factor in wear and tear on the equipment, they are probably making even less off you.

Maybe that's why they can't fix any of the equipment when it breaks.

Not quite. In 2005 the Trolley Square 24 Hour Fitness opened and they offered a deal where I paid $800 up front to cover 3 years ($22 a month) and then $20 a year for the rest of my life. I suspect they want me to die or move to Montana. Since I signed up I think I have used around 17 different locations (Colorado Springs, Palm Springs, Palo Alto, San Francisco (2), Berkeley, Salt Lake City (3), LA area (4), Seattle (3), Provo (1)) Quite possibly the best investment I will ever make.

5 years ago a co-worker and me wrote up a scientific report with graphs and everything showing how much more productive healthy employees where than non-healthy and presented it to the CEO of our company. Because of that my company started paying for our monthly gym memberships. 2 years ago when the economy sucked and they were laying people off, cutting the bonus program and 401K match the only thing people protested about was the gym membership so they didn't drop it.

Best report I ever wrote!!! :)
