Long-Term Running Goals: not to run any more marathons. Personal: Yes, I am a Virginia Tech Hokie. I pretty much live and die with VT football, so hide the pups indoors this fall if the season goes south.
I grew up in NJ, competed in middle school XC, was primarily a 400m sprinter (& XC) in h.s., and an 800/400m mid-distance runner at Virginia Tech. Graduated VT with an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and currently am involved with the youth.
This blog is dedicated to my family and friends. I have 2 (er 3, sorry Tambo!) wonderful sisters and 2 very supportive parents. Kim is a Graphic Designer in D.C., and at one time rode and trained horses; Melissa is an English Lit teacher at an all-girls h.s. in NJ, in addition to being the XC/track coach. She really likes comma splices. Tammy is an Elementary Teacher and a crazy good soccer/basketball athlete, lives across the block from my parents, and is very funny. All 3 have run at least one marathon. I believe Tambo has run more marathons than I have. I am ok with that. I am very proud of them all. Oh yeah, also 2 screwball huskies, Apollo and Zeus.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows that it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed.
Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle, or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter if you are a lion or if you are a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running. |

| | My Sunday run mates were out of town this weekend, so I hopped on a dirt trail in the Snow Canyon area, figuring that the St. G road course would still be there next weekend. I began the run a little after high noon with 2 frozen rock-solid 24-oz water bottles. A little hot at first, then 12 miles into the run dark storm clouds rumbled into the region and ate the sun. I was expecting/hoping to get dumped on but didn't. Anyway, this was an encouraging run - good effort throughout (though only ~7:30 ave?) and no heat/hydration issues. Bottles ran dry w/ 2 miles to go. From the period just before the run to just after I went through 100+ ounces (3 qts.) of water! Looking forward to a good week. | | Comments(6) |
| | Up-tempo run this evening. Starting at the Dixie Center trailhead, I headed east into Washington, then doubled back. The legs were sore from the get-go - perhaps I should've backed off - but about 0.5-mile into the run I hit a rhythm and just went with it. 9 miles at ~6:15-6:25 pace, which isn't much to write home about, but the effort was there. Stretched for a good while afterwards, which is helping. | | Comments(5) |

I ran, 20 minutes following a large sugary dessert. This may of been a mistake, as I was hitting 6:50's for what should have been a recovery run!
561x2 steps over 1609m in 6:45 = 166 step-count. Too low. Signal to me that I was fatigued.

| | Interesting day. Firstly, in a sleepy stupor, I half recollect a telephone conversation with my sister. Something about wiring my life savings over to her account. In the evening, plan was to find a trail for 13-15 miles. But one thing led to another, and I returned home with 45 minutes for a run. So impromptu workout, fartlek-style up some hilly hills in the neighborhood, and recovery pace down the flipsides. Worked on the turnover too. | | Comments(3) |

| | 15 miles, morning trails at Snow Canyon (West Canyon mostly). It was hot. The legs required a mile or 2 to get going, then I found a decent groove. Following the run though I was out of it the remainder of the day. | | Add Comment |
| | 4 miles. Initially planned for ~10, but needed a relative rest day. | | Add Comment |
