I was going to run an 11 mile tempo run today. I warmed up about 2.5 miles. I started out well at 5:47 through the first mile, and 5:50 through the second mile. I didn't feel like I was pushing that hard, but my right hip kept hurting and was not warming out. Right before the 2.5 mile mark I felt shooting pains from my hip down my leg that caused me to stop.
I'm not recovering, and I'm pretty sure that I have bursitis in my hip. It's been bugging me since I started marathon training, but the pain kind of comes and goes, and doesn't usually bother me while I'm running. It's usually a couple hours after my run that I notice. It has really flared up since Wednesday. The pain is right on the trochanter (is that how you say it?) I don't think it's anything too serious, but the fact that it is getting worse is not good.
I decided to take the rest of the weekend off, and see if the flare up will calm down. I can't afford to take any significant time off, so it's just going to be pain management until the marathon. I know I need the mileage, but I don't feel like I recovered well at all after the half marathon last week; especially when you add in traveling.
I'm going to change my training a little. It's important for me to get mileage, but I know I'm doing too much at high intensity. A middle of the week fartlek workout seems to be too much, especially followed by a long tempo and a long run on Friday and Saturday. I think I'll either run intervals Monday or Tuesday, take two days recovery, and run tempo on Thursday or Friday. I think if I take out the third workout in the middle of the week I will feel better.
On happy news, the race director for PF Chang has talked with my agent, and they are paying my travel, hotel, and race entry. Yay!! I am nervous now that training has taken a bit of a nose dive this week. I need to get right back into the swing of things next week. It is not very long until the marathon. |
