21 hot, sweaty, sleepless miles with Jenny.  I'm glad I had her to pull me through.  I had insomnia so badly last night, and ended up only sleeping about an hour and a half.  I was okay through about 11 miles, but the last ten were a struggle.  My head was buzzing.  But, I made it, and still managed to average 7:13 per mile.  Jenny left me the last couple.  She was spunky today!

Anyone have suggestions for sleep aids?  I'm afraid to take them because I don't want to rely on them to help me sleep.  I don't have insomnia that often, but when I do, it seems impossible to fall asleep.  Melatonin work for anyone?

another great week for you. nice job with the LR despite being in a sleepless fog.

i've been dealing with insomnia for ~3 years. never had an issue before that and then all of a sudden i am awake (WIDE AWAKE) 2-3 nights/week. the most frustrating thing is you know how tired future you will be, but yet current you refuses to fall asleep. i haven't tried any sort of sleep aid, mostly because i'm worried about side effects during the day and/or difficultly waking up on time. i don't know if those are even legitimate concerns, i just haven't taken the time to experiment with it.

the thing i've found that works best for me is to embrace the awakeness rather than try to fight it off and force sleep. i get up and do something -- write, sort through photos, draw stupid pictures...i've even gone for short walks. basically anything to engage my brain for 30-60 min that doesn't require a lot of thinking or induce any stress. after that "reset" of sorts, i can usually fall asleep. i still lose an hour, but it's better than losing 3-4 just lying there staring at the ceiling and feeling annoyed (i've done that many times). if you find something that works well for you, i would love to hear about it.

again, good job with your training. you are really rocking it.

Thanks, Allie! I usually deal with my insomnia the same way. I go downstairs and read, and eat something because I am always starving. I think the looming long run got me really worked up. I knew I needed the sleep, and I knew I couldn't postpone the run.

I was trying everything to fall asleep. Church stuff usually works wonders. I even tried reciting all 13 articles of faith from memory. Nothing worked. I should have just got up for a while. I was afraid of falling asleep and not making my run.

Hate the insomnia. I don't know where it came from, but it started hitting around puberty. My whole family are insomniacs. We regularly text or talk at 2 in the morning. Probably too much anxiety.
