AM  I ran 5 miles on 4800 South over to the river trail and back to my house from Millrace Park.  I'm having calf problems again, and though I was able to make it through the run, it got a lot worse as I went.   I ended up cross training yesterday because my calves were sore and I don't seem to be recovering from workouts very well.  I'm supposed to race in the Top of Utah half marathon this weekend.  Hopefully, I can get my calves under control, because as of now there is no way I can run 13.1 miles in racing flats.  I'm frustrated!!!

I would just settle with wearing light weight trainers. I am considering doing so myself for Hobble Creek. TOU is a great 1/2, I did that race last year. I hope you can work it out so you can have a great race. Is it your first 1/2 marathon?

From Paul Petersen on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 13:29:11

Yeah, a light trainer might be better, esp. given that TOU is a downhill course. I look forward to seeing what sort of time you can put up on that course. Is Teren running too?

From emruns on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 14:53:04

Yes, Teren is running, too. He's all about winning the circuit this year. I'm hoping to post a good time so that I can get some travel and lodging at some bigger races. I've run several half-marathons and 3 20ks. I've only run 1:17 for the half, but my 20k times convert to 1:15-1:16.

TOU is definitely a fast course (aided), and most of the time you get a big tailwind coming out of the canyon. Temperature should be perfect too. I would think sub-1:15 should be doable for you. Just be sure to save up some energy for the long uphill at Mile 11-12. Best of luck.

Based off your Minuteman 5 K I figure you would have run DesNews 10 K around 34:20 or so. Cynthia Fowler ran 34:06 last year, and 1:16:01 in TOU Half. Sub-1:15 would be within the shooting range, but assuming no significant increases in fitness you should expect somewhere around 1:16.
