Basketball this morning. I'm going to do a 4 mile tempo run tonight, then take it easy the next two days before the Trails Half Marathon on Saturday. Tonight I had Sunny drive me out to Anderson Junction then I did 7 miles back home. The goal was to run 4 mile repeats at a pace which I would consider threshold. I was a little worried about doing this workout, mainly because of the +100 degree temperature. I took some water, but still died in the heat.

1 mile warm-up. My hip was a little sore warming up and I was a little worried about doing the first mile.

1-5:24, this mile has some good downhill, which is really what I need some help learning how to run faster on. I felt pretty good on this one and the hip seemed to loosen up.

2-5:38 not as much downhill, more level. I only rested a minute between the first mile and this one, which now looking back I think might have drained me more for repeats 3 and 4

3-5:41 another mile with some good downhill, I had to move off the road twice, to avoid being ran over by crazy drivers.

At this point I was going to just be done with the mile repeats so I did an easy jog back to La Verkin up the hill and into town.

However, I decided to go ahead and try to do one more fast mile home.

4-5:48 I think this is the fastest I've ever run this mile which ends pretty much at my house.

Once home I did a very short cool down, and it the shower, I had company coming over and didn't have much time.

All in all, I was happy with the workout, and being able to run 4 in the heat. Next time I would like to be a little more consistent with the rest and recovery between miles.

I would not recommend taking it easy at all. You cannot waste training days on a taper right now.

Yeah, I took it easy last week and had my worst 1/2(for the way I felt)ever! I recommend a 20 miler tomorrow, and two 10 milers with 5 miles at V02 max on Friday.

Only the first sentence is true!

Sasha is right now is not the time to be taking it easy, but then again I never really defined what taking it easy was, I would imagine the workouts a day or two before a race would really depend on the runner, the race, and what is the real goal for the race. Don't worry I'm not tapering for a race that is in two days.

Dustin - if the definition of taking it easy is running any less mileage than you have run on average in the last two weeks, then you should not take it easy. I would recommend just training through the race, and treating it as a workout. This approach will make your races slower in the short run, but you will run them eventually faster than you would have had you been cutting down for them.

hi dustin,

take everyones advice with a grain of salt. i would do what your body tells you to do. after bryce and enterprise races i had a couple of really low mileage weeks i don't think it hurt me. some of these bloggers are really ocd but everyone runs for there own reasons and 100 plus miles every week and no rest is not what i signed up for. good luck and maybe i'll see you at the half. my wife is expecting a baby any day so i'll play things by ear.

Good job getting out there with a harder workout today. I like your analysis of how you can improve the workout for you next time. Keep it up and keep building for a few weeks and you'll do great. I like some of Ryan's thoughts - especially considering some of the things you shared last time we ran about your plans after the marathon. Sometimes you need a little reminder about why you love to run - you meaning all of us - and sometimes that's a race, a beautiful run, or even backing off for just a little.

I for one run to watch you guys kick my butt every time we meet. I just love to be humiliated and put in my place each and every time we meet. MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY! Keep up the great work outs. I think quality running is more important then just getting miles. Look at Steve H. I think his track commitment has done wonders for improving his speed. Keep up the good work Dustin!

Congratulations on expecting the baby.

Regarding the low mileage. If a building has already been demolished by a wrecking ball, dropping a bomb on it does not hurt. Same if there was no building to begin with. Low mileage will not hurt if there is no aerobic base to start with. You were only 2 minutes behind Dave Holt in the 10 K in the Summer Games. One would expect you to be a bit over 4 minutes behind him in the half marathon, this would give you a low 1:15 in Bryce Canyon. You were 3:30 slower than that. Why? Because Dave has been running more in two weeks than you do in a month.

Now I can understand that people may have a different degree of commitment to running for various reason. But I do want to get the record straight. Low mileage = unfulfilled potential. Properly done high mileage = exceeding your dreams. Numerous blogs on this site are the evidence.

What a comment session on Dustin's blog! I had my doubts with increasing my mileage and if I would ever see results. I was wrong! Increasing the mileage properly has been great. My race times are faster and my training workouts are better. Good workout today Dustin.
