Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

wow - 6 am and 80 degrees and 86% humidity.  I had forgotten how warm and muggy summer mornings could be.  Much warmer than yesterday morning.  Anyway - recovery run and I was content to stay nice and slow - 8:20's to 9:00 range.

Met a few people at Barton Springs for a short run with some MGP thrown in.  MGP mile 2 consisted of some good rolling hills.  As we get into the thick of training in a month or two these runs will increase in MGP mileage, up to 10 miles at MGP with some easy miles thrown in.

Today's run was 2 easy, 3 MGP, 2 easy.  5:30 am but still 80 degrees with high humidity.  Jumped in Barton Springs - 65 degrees year round - afterward for a fantastic cool down.

Splits:  9:06, 8:30, 7:14, 7:24, 7:04, 8:04, 7:36.

I plan on running 10 miles tomorrow morning and getting my mileage up to 60 this week.

6 am - high 70's and  something like 90% humidity.  I ran the Rain Creek, Lost Horizon, Jollyville route.  Some good hills between miles 2-5. Mile 5 includes a significant and long climb. Around mile 7 I had to take quick walking break as the heat started to take its toll.  I was fine after wards, though.  Not sure what that was about.  I slowed down a bit, too.  I could feel my legs were a bit tired from the past few days.  I may do a 5 and 5 double tomorrow to give them a break.  Splits:  9:30, 8:08, 8:04, 7:50, 8:30, 7:41, 7:58, 8:14, 8:15, 7:50.

I woke up this morning to thunder and considerable lightning.  I went back to bed.  I was able to squeeze in a 7 mile run at the indoor track during lunch.  I don't have splits but it took about 54-55 minutes - so average in the 7:50's.

81 degrees and high humidity at 5:45 am.  Ran fartleks with the group today - 2 miles warm-up, 4 miles of 3 minutes 10k pace  w/1 minute recovery, 2 minutes 10k pace w/1 minute recovery, 1 minute 10k pace w/1 minute recovery - with the whole set repeated 3 times.  1 mile easy followed by 6 x 100m strides followed by another 2 miles easy.  The last 2 miles I went back out on my own.  10k pace was around 6:30 - 6:40.  Full splits:  9:01, 8:31, 7:33, 7:19, 7:16, 7:16, 8:07, 8:40, 8:29.

5.5 easy - content to stay in recovery range - 8:20's.  Not sure what the heat index out there is but it must be close to 90 with 90% humidity.  Fun stuff!

We started out at Barton Springs pool and met up with the group at RunTex.  It was warm and muggy - 82 degrees at 5:30 am.  We ran the Mt. Bonnell route and did some extra credit at the end to make 15 miles.  I had wanted to get in 16 but with the conditions and bump up in mileage this week I was content with 15.  Jumped in Barton Springs after the run.  Splits to follow.
