Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

We ran most of the Austin course today. It was cold to start - 30 degrees but fortunately no wind.  My goal was to try and run a bit slower to get used to being out there for 3 hours - ended up at an overall pace of 8:00 per mile with some slower miles at the beginning plus the hills along the course.  Finished with 6 x 100m strides. Next Sunday I have a 20 mile race and I will shoot for 13-14 miles of it at MGP.  Only 6 weeks until the Marathon.

Cold and windy day but sunny.  7 miles during lunchtime.  No Garmin.  I am now dealing with some pain in my right Gluteus Medius.  Only minor when running but painful after the run.  I started feeling it last Thursday and ran a 22 mile run with it on Saturday.  I have an appointment to see my PT this week.

No running today - unfortunately the pain in my hip/glute is still there, and rather than risk the marathon in 6 weeks by making it worse, I decided to take a day or two off.

Went to the gym and lunch and got in an excellent core workout followed by 10 minutes in the hot tub to loosen up this pain.

I saw the PT who diagnosed my pain as joint inflamation.  He did some adjusting and stretching and I felt 100% better.  I was given a clean bill of health and told I could resume training, taking it a bit slower on speed workouts and downhills.

I ran 7 miles around the trail.  I did not have my Garmin but I figure 7:40's - 7:50s.

It was cold, dark and windy - I only got about 5 1/2 hours of sleep, and just was not feeling it today.  Nonetheless, we ran close to 12 miles on the Austin hilly course picking it up on the second half to finish with 7:00 - 7:20 minute miles.  Overall pace was 8:10.

Well, talk about a disappointing week.  Thursday I tweeked my calf and I did not notice until Friday.  I took Saturday off and today was a 20 mile race that I was going to use as a 16 mile MGP run.  I made it  to mile 8 and decided to bag it and not risk the bigger goal of the marathon.  I will need to take a few days off before I run again.  I have a 22 miler coming up on Saturday, hopefully I will be back by then.

Saw my PT today - definitely have an aggravated sciatic nerve going from glute all the way down the leg.  No running for a week, but at this point he is not ruling out the marathon 4 weeks away. We will see how it goes next week.

He found that the lower back muscles next to the spine on the right side were not engaging/firing.  The PT got them to fire again and gave me some exercises.  They really did a lot of manipulation as well.  I spent an hour there.

I need to cross train for the same time that I would have been running.  I did an hour in the evening on the eliptical keeping my heart rate in the 150's.

Glad to hear the doc hasn't ruled out the race. I've been stalking your blog since your improvement is so evident; I'm hoping to imitate your results eventually. It would be a bummer if you missed this BQ opportunity but it looks like you're on your way to getting it soon regardless. Good luck with the injury.

There should be a way to track cross training time/equivalent on this site.

Anyway - 60 minutes on the eliptical with HR in 140's, some 150's.  It takes much more effort to get my heart rate up to the same level compared to 3-4 months ago.  That is a good sign that my aerobic capacity is improving.

Cleared to run today by the PT, will try an easy 5, tomorrow cross training, 9 - 10 miles on Thursday, Friday cross train.  I need to get a 22 miler in on Saturday or Sunday - that will be 3 weeks from the Marathon.

Five easy miles - testing out the injury recovery.  Some tenderness but never enough pain to make me stop running.  My lower back was somewhat stiff after the run.  Amazingly, I got up after some time at my desk and walked with no major problem/pain.  Cross training day tomorrow, will try to run again on Thursday morning.  PT said to go for 9-10 miles.  I will see how I feel Thursday morning.  It is all pretty iffy right now - not sure if I want to risk the 22 miler this weekend or not.

Nice morning for a run - I got 10 miles in with the last couple @ MGP.  I stopped briefly at mile 5 for water and felt little to no pain, so finished out the next 5 at a faster pace.  Also saw the PT this morning again.  The right side lower back muscle was still not firing @ 100% so we worked on that again.

I may cross train or do 5 easy tomorrow and try to get 20-22 in on Saturday.  Could end up with a 40 mile week which would be great since last week was basically no miles and I only have 3 weeks until the marathon.  I don't have a clue on how to taper at this point - build up on week 3 and then taper back down from there?

Hey man, looks like your training is coming along nicely outside of a few minor pain issues. I've had a couple months basically off for various reasons, but I'm back at things now. Hope everything goes well leading up to the marathon ... how many weeks now?

Let's see - coming off an injury, fighting a cold/infection, bad sleep and warm/humid morning = terrible training run.  It was tough, seemed to struggle the last 4 miles.  I wore myself out a bit on the hills and paid for it later.  I can't remember a worse long run in a while.  8:00 is overall pace, 3 or so MGP miles, I have not really looked at my garmin splits.  My legs are really sore - can 10 days off or running be so hard to come back from?

I can't run this weekend because my wife is out of town and I have to watch the kids.  That means I had to run tomorrow's run today and I had to cut it a bit short.  Also, running MGP miles today after yesterday's hard workout had my legs tired by mile 8.  Anyway, I toughed it out and finished knowing I had a 2 day break and a taper week next week of only about 30 miles with no hard workouts.  I wanted to get 45 miles in this week but managed only 40.  I had some quality workouts so I don't think the 5 easy miles that I would have run will make any difference in 9 days when I run the marathon.  I ran the first 8 miles of the marathon course and then 2 back on the trail for a total of 10, the first mile was 8:30 or so with 2 more around 8:00 - these are all going up a steady incline, then picked it up coming back in @ MGP for the next 7 miles.  I ended up with an overall average pace of my BQ pace..

Well, I am pretty much in trouble.  The shoes that I have been training in caused some pain in the ball of my left foot.  I got the Nike Lunar Elites on a recommendation from someone who has seen me run and knows my form.  I liked them a lot and did 60 miles in them in the first week I had them.  But then I started to get some soreness  in my shins and left knee.  I went back to my Newtons today and had no issues and they are my shoe of choice. The don't have quite 300 miles on them so I am crossing my fingers that they are good for the marathon.  It is too late to order a new pair and get a couple runs in.  I don't want to take a chance in the Elites though I think they are a good shoe and would work out over the long haul.

I will run in the Newtons a couple more times and the Nikes tomorrow and see what happens.

I ran 6 miles today, 3 easy, 2.5 @ MGP and .5 cool down.

Well, yesterday was just not my day.  A recent death in the family has been really stressful for us and the injury a few weeks ago did not help either.  But I decided to go ahead and give it a shot and see what I could do.  I had trained really hard and felt that I could do it.   I played it conservatively for the first 17 miles, probably too conservatively.  I was around 45 - 60 seconds off the pace group at that point.  I just kept telling myself to start picking it up a little at a time and then to make a final push down Red River and then Duval like we had on so many long runs.  At mile 24 I still had a legitimate shot but I needed to make up a bit over a minute.  So I pushed the pace and was feeling pretty good but all of the sudden I completely bonked at 25.  I just died.  I lost all form and was pretty much delirious at this point. I am not sure why because I had taken water at every stop as well as a Gel every 4 miles.

Thank goodness that my pal Monique was there at mile 25 cheering others on.  She ran out and got me walking again.  We did a run/walk to the Capitol Building.  Then I took off with what I had left, sprinting to the finish, with Monique yelling at me the whole way.  I pretty much collapsed when I crossed the finish line.  I was taken to the medical tent in a wheel chair.  I was completely dehydrated and my calves were cramping big time.  Several ice bags and bottles of Powerade later I was finally able to get up and walk on my own.

It was definitely something I will never forget – being paced during the last mile and to the finish by Monique in a green afro wig and then collapsing and getting taken to the medical tent in a wheel chair!  What is the slogan – Run Austin – LOVE Austin?  You gotta love Austin.   I was 4 minutes from BQ’ing but I did manage to PR by 6 minutes – so that is something.

This is only my third marathon and I am still learning - I probably don't race enough.  Last year I only ran one 10k, a couple 5ks and a half marathon.  I will continue to train and take what I learned from this experience.  I am only 4 minutes from a BQ.

Wow, a PR coming off a injury and the family stresss...bonking at 25M and still nearly BQ'ing, what a race. Way to hang tough and make it through. Marathons are strange beasts to tame, your next one will be better.

So close - looks like you'll be there next time for sure. I guess not every race can be a 40-minute PR! Nice run despite all the setbacks, looks like you've come a long way.

Tough race. You did great and set a new PR. I'm sure all that training will payoff soon and you'll get the BQ.

Just curious, are you doing the Capitol 10K again? I'm signed up this year and was curious how the crowds were. It looks massive from the photos.

From derhammer on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 23:15:40 from 76.233.36.211

Hey there,

Yes, I am planning on running it again this year. It is pretty crowded but nothing outrageous. The start is on the south side of Congress bridge and they have the both sides of the street blocked off so there is plenty of room. I started up pretty close to the front last year and it was fine. I am not too sure how it is if you start further back. Once you get on to 15th it starts to thin out quite a bit. It is a great race - just beware of the first 2 miles - pretty much all up hill.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 11:14:24 from 131.59.200.82

Thanks for the info. I put my predicted time as 47, so I'm not sure what color bib that puts me with - hopefully not back too far.

From derhammer on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 16:13:40 from 192.156.110.34

The colored bib is a bit of a joke - there wasn't anyone policing people last year. You could pretty much line up where ever you want. Good Luck!

First run since the marathon.  I went out pretty slow and took a couple walk breaks.   Still have a couple issues and some soreness to workout, so I won't start to run regularly for a couple more weeks.  I just wanted to test the waters so to speak.  I have been keeping myself busy with walking/spinning/eliptical.

OK, in typical runner fashion I went out again after saying I wouldn't yesterday.  I woke up and felt pretty good, so I decided to go out for an easy run.  6.5 or so (no Garmin but I know the route) in 53 minutes.  I will go out again, I would like to get a run in everyday this week.  I have minor surgery next Monday, so I won't be able to run for 5 days after that.

Still feeling pretty good - ran 7 miles at lunchtime in 57:00.  Started out pretty slow - nice and easy pace, started to rain on my last mile so I ran a sub 7:00 mile to get back to the office.  Probably cross train tomorrow, depends on how I feel.  I don't want to ramp up to fast - it has been 2 weeks since the marathon.

I am signing up for the Steamtown Marathon in October.  I already booked a room, registration opens April 1st.

March, April, May and half of June will be base mileage months.  I am going to work on maintaining 60-65 miles a week while staying injury free.  I will start more specific marathon training mid-June.

We are at Disney World - ran 6.5 easy before the family woke up.  I walked another 7 miles during the day at  Magic Kingdom.  The kids had a blast.

I did not get a chance to get in a run yesterday.  I am OK with that as 35 miles this week will be sufficient as this is my first running week after the marathon.

On another note. I was looking over your blog. After taking 13 days off you returned to about 40+ miles/week. Just be careful of your return to running. If I'm not mistaken this was your first 'serious' Marathon attempt, at least in terms of proper training. Go back at it slow. I would recommend that you not do any faster paced work for 6 weeks and keep everything fairly light and easy. Build your miles back up slowly. See my blog from April 2008 on to see how to injur yourself post-marathon.

7.5 ish miles during lunchtime. I did not have my garmin or my watch, but I had a pedometer on me.  9400 steps and one mile is about 1200 steps.

Today is only the 4 day after my minor surgery so I am pretty excited to have been able to get out and run with no pain or ill effects.

It's base building time of year - I plan on getting into the 60's consistently before marathon specific training in June-July.

Nice morning though a bit warm towads the end.  Drove down to town lake trail with the intention of running 10 miles.  My legs still seem a big fatigued.  I am not sure if this is normal or not after finishing a marathon and coming back three weeks later.   I managed 8 miles and the last couple were a bit of a struggle.  Hit some 7:40's though.

Today was going to be a 6 mile easy day with some slower miles.  I hit a train near the house and went through some forest trails.  Then I crossed over a stream and went to a part I have never been on before.  It was quite rocky and a significant climb for about a mile.  I got to the top and ran it back home.  Legs were complaining a bit going up.  Ended up getting in 8 miles.  Plan is to hit 40 this week and start working my way back up to 60 a week.

6 easy - my legs are feeling tired with the increase in mileage and not taking a day off in 16 days.  I struggled this morning - 8:10's - 8:20's pace.  I believe I will take tomorrow off.  I am also continuously dealing with a bit of a shin splint on my left leg.  Staying away from any 5 - 10k pace miles until it goes away.

Medium long run today. I didn't know how my legs would feel as they have been pretty tired the last couple of days.  We started off at a good pace and picked it up to close to 1/2 marathon pace the last couple of miles.  8:14, 7:55, 7:49, 7:43, 7:42, 7:38, 7:27, 7:29, 7:31, 7:03, 6:56, 7:28.  Today was 17 days straight without a day off - I am taking tomorrow off for sure!

For some reason it was hard to get going this morning.  The group was meeting downtown for mile repeats.  I really wanted to go but I decided with my shin still a bit sore it would be best to skip the hard workout.  I went out for a 10 mile run and could not really get into a groove until maybe the last 4 miles or so.  The first 5 1/2 miles was quite hilly with a couple significant climbs. I averaged around an 8:28 pace the first 6 miles and 8:05 pace the last miles.  My hamstrings complained a bit along the way.  Amazingly, my shin felt pretty good afterwards.

Shin splint has been getting progressively better since I have stuck with running in my Pumas.  Went to the gym for an hour yesterday for leg and core work.  My legs were a bit sore today.  Went out at lunchtime for an 8 mile run.  8:10 warm up mile followed by 7 @ 7:43 - 7:50 range.  It must have been about 80 out there and sunny.

Fartlek run this morning - 2 mile warm up followed by 2 mins @ 6:30-6:40 pace with 1 min easy - did 3 miles of this.  I started falling off at mile 5 - stopped for some water and the group carried on without me.  I ran the next 1.5 easy and then kicked it in the last .5 miles.  My legs got a bit tired at mile 5 - I probably run my easy runs a bit fast to come out to a workout and do well.

Ran 4 miles to the gym and back for core during lunch.  Recovery pace - 8:58 overall average.

Taking today off from running.  Went to the gym this morning for some leg work and core, followed by an hour of spinning class with hard effort.  It felt good, I think my legs want a bit of a break - the spinning helps loosen up the hips and hamstrings as well.

2nd day off - shin is getting better, I still feel it a bit while walking.  Hopefully after a week or so it will be good to go.  I was running 50+ miles a week on it and it was not getting worse.  I am hopeful it will heal up soon.

Went to the gym for a spinning class which was full - so I did some leg and core work.

I thought I would try and break 19:00 today.  I have had a pretty good week's rest and felt pretty good during recent workouts even while fighting a couple minor injuries like a shint splint.  I met up with 2 other runners from the group that I run with.  We got somewhat separated at the start and I could never catch one of them - and the other one passed me at about mile 1.5.  I got into a groove and felt pretty good but I started out too slow at a 6:13 - there was a slight incline but I should have done a 6:05, I think mile 2 was a 6:12, and mile 3 was close to the same, the last .2 miles I kicked it in at a 4:59 pace.  I could see that I would PR so I went for it - I did not make 19:00 but I did PR by 10 seconds and have not really been doing any consistent speed training. Someday after I qualify for Boston I would like to spend a couple months on 5k training to see what I could do.

Did 2 warm-up and 2 cool down miles.

Shin split is so much better since I started doing the correct calf raises.  I had been doing them for over a month straight legged, but was told last Thursday to do them with my knee bent.  I have been doing about 3 sets a day, 20-30 raises each set.  It has made all the difference in the world.

8 easy/recovery miles in the am.  Summer is almost here - very humid - shorts were soaking wet when I got home.

60 minutes spinning class at the gym.  I have to say that I love spinning - works different muscles, loosens the legs up and really gets the blood flowing in the legs speeding up recovery, all while working the aerobic system.

Shin split is almost gone completely - bent knee calf raises are the key.

Derhamer, I appreciate the advice. I'm willing to try anything right now with my time ticking down to my next marthon... 3 weeks. I'm from Texas myself. I grew up in Katy, right outside of Houston. I know all about humidity and don't miss it at all. Looks like you have made some nice improvements over your last few marthons. I don't know your AG, but your close to that BQ goal.

Great run this morning - probably ran it faster than I should have.  Ran with the group and tried to keep up with the faster runners. 70 degrees and high humidity.  Dropped the bomb on the last mile and half, but I had someone behind me yelling that I needed to run faster at the end if I wanted to qualify for Boston.  It was great motivation because I was ready to just run it in nice and slow.  Splits: 8:25, 8:01, 7:41, 7:27,7:42, 7:44, 7:26, 7:22, 7:30, 7:33, 7:36, 7:28, 7:13, 6:20.  Shooting for 60 miles this week.

Met a few people at Barton Springs for a short run with some MGP thrown in.  MGP mile 2 consisted of some good rolling hills.  As we get into the thick of training in a month or two these runs will increase in MGP mileage, up to 10 miles at MGP with some easy miles thrown in.

Today's run was 2 easy, 3 MGP, 2 easy.  5:30 am but still 80 degrees with high humidity.  Jumped in Barton Springs - 65 degrees year round - afterward for a fantastic cool down.

Splits:  9:06, 8:30, 7:14, 7:24, 7:04, 8:04, 7:36.

I plan on running 10 miles tomorrow morning and getting my mileage up to 60 this week.

Thanks for the encouragement! I am signed up for the Steamtown Marathon - it is the same day as Chicago. The course is very favorable and October "should" bring cool weather. Also, it has all 5-star reviews on marathonguide.com.

Keep running strong!

6 am - high 70's and  something like 90% humidity.  I ran the Rain Creek, Lost Horizon, Jollyville route.  Some good hills between miles 2-5. Mile 5 includes a significant and long climb. Around mile 7 I had to take quick walking break as the heat started to take its toll.  I was fine after wards, though.  Not sure what that was about.  I slowed down a bit, too.  I could feel my legs were a bit tired from the past few days.  I may do a 5 and 5 double tomorrow to give them a break.  Splits:  9:30, 8:08, 8:04, 7:50, 8:30, 7:41, 7:58, 8:14, 8:15, 7:50.

Last night I started feeling a bit of a strain in my left calf.  I did not feel it at all yesterday - maybe I did something while mowing the lawn last night?  I decided to start running this morning and see how I felt.  It was much better by mile 2.  A bit sore now, though, tomorrow looks like a good day to take off.  We'll see how it feels the rest of the day.

Good run this morning - I did take a quick water break at mile 5.5 and to get my heart rate back down a bit - it was again quite warm and humid.  Ended up running on the faster end of easy run pace, in fact, a bit faster. I tried not to pay attention to my Garmin and just run by feel.  Ever have those runs where you think you are going faster then you really are?  Today was the opposite for me, especially on the  last 5 miles - I thought I was running slower so it was a pleasant surprise when I looked at my splits after the run.  Splits:  9:51, 7:58, 7:42, 7:34, 7:35, 7:40, 7:33, 7:40, 7:35, 7:35, 7:43.

I ran by the house at 10.5 miles and tacked on a little bit extra with a quick loop for 11.20 miles- I wanted to stop at the house so badly that I figured it was good mentally to push through a bit.

Took it super easy the first couple of miles as I wanted to test out my right calf.  It felt pretty good so I put in close to 10 miles.  I stopped by the group workout and saw the PT at about mile 8.  He said I had a "stuck joint" and did an adjustment.  The calf felt much better and I hardly feel it here in the office as I write this.   Jumped in Barton Springs afterward for a nice cool down.  Splits:  9:56, 8:58, 8:24, 8:13, 8:25, 7:49, 8:03, 8:02, 7:56, 7:53.

Tough run - humid and humid - lots and lots of hills, too.  8:06 overall.  I got a cramp in my side towards at mile 11 and just wanted to bag it at mile 12.  Tried to keep up with the small group that I was running with but faded @ mile 12.  I did manage to keep going though and add on some mileage at the end.  I think the 10 and 11 milers Thursday and Friday took something out of today's run.  I wanted to push 14 but happy to finish.  We start ramping up mileage on next week's long run - should be at least a 16 mile long run.Splits:  9:06, 8:56, 8:11, 8:18, 8:03, 7:57, 8:09, 7:54, 7:45, 7:49, 7:44, 7:52, 8:22, .30 @ 7:33.  Overall, looking back at the splits, I am pretty pleased given the course, conditions and how I felt at the time.

Woke up today feeling horrible - not sure if it's allergies or what.  Somehow I managed to put my shoes on and drive down for a run.  I had already decided I wanted to do a SS run but with the heat, humidity and how I was feeling I didn't think it was going to happen.  I also decided I needed to start hammering some downhills during my runs to prepare for Steamtown.  Unfortunately, downhills usually require running up the hills first.  I ran the Enfield and partial Exposition loop to get some hills.  All and all it ended up not being too bad of a run even though I was a bit off pace:  Splits:  8:51, 8:05, 7:38, 7:40, 7:25, 7:45, 7:29, 7:20, 7:35, 7:29.  Jumped in Barton Springs pool afterward for a cool down followed by some stretching.

Not sure if it's hotter - mornings have been quite warm though. It is not unusual for my car gauge to show 78-80 degrees when I drive up for my run. The humidity drops off in the evening, of course, but my body is too accustomed to morning runs that it would be hard for me to switch.

I did not have a good day today.  I am not sure what went wrong.  Humidity was at 90% it seemed and the temp was about 78.  I did not have a good night sleep at all and mentally I was not in this run.  It seemed I was working extra hard and not achieving much.  I got a side cramp that lasted the rest of the run at mile 8.  I missed a turn and ended up with 14 vs the 17 I wanted to get.  This was probably a good thing.  I did manage to skip 2 waterstops all together and keep forging ahead.  I suppose I am not too worried since this was a recovery week.  Still a bit concerned though as I was off 30-40 seconds of my normal long runs and I struggled.  I thought if I went slower it would feel easier.  I  I did not even bother with strides I was so tired. Easy run today - I tried to find the balance of a good aerobic zone without going too fast in advance of tomorrow's workout.  The last mile and a half was a good mild downhill stretch.  I am hopeful that the  Steamtown course is similar - I cruised along with out much effort and when I glanced at my Garmin it showed at one point I was at a 7:13 pace.  Splits:  9:27, 8:15, 7:56, 7:57, 7:49, 7:34, .5 @ 7:54.

Very consistent running, good job. Do you do your long runs slow or do you push it?

From derhammer on Fri, Jul 09, 2010 at 17:19:00 from 65.67.40.73

Long runs - I have been pushing them - most miles at MGP or lower. My coach told me to slow down! Focus instead on the Monday MGP runs (he wants these to get to 10 miles by September and closer to tempo pace) and hard Thursday workouts. For long runs the plan is: 20 mile run: first 10 miles @ 45-60 seconds slower than MGP, next 5 miles drop 30 seconds, next 5 miles drop 15 seconds. 22 mile run the same but last 2 miles try to go anaerobic - fast as I can, 24 mile run - if I go that long - same as above but last 4 hard. There will also be a long run with 12-13 @ MGP. Well, that's the plan! Personally, I don't see how anyone can just run slow long runs and expect to go out and run a marathon at 60 seconds faster per mile. I think one needs to mix it up and do plenty of miles at or below MGP in order to train the body to get used to the pace. Just my 2 cents...

You think the way I do, though I haven't been doing it consistently lately. I dropped from a 4:58 to a 4:13 in 2-1/2 months at the end of last year, by running every day and taking my long runs hard. Lately I have had the injury bug, I think running fast is hard on my old legs. Hard to know exactly how hard to push. Is BQ 3:10 for you? Seems like you are already in that range judging from your recent training times.

From derhammer on Fri, Jul 09, 2010 at 18:04:58 from 65.67.40.73

You are talking to Mr. injury here. So far I have been doing well this spring. The wisdom says to run the hard days hard and the easy days easy. The tricky part is keeping those recovery runs in the right pace - for me its 8:40 - 9:00. Just keep thinking that if you run too fast your hard days will suffer. Also, I like to take a recovery week every 4th week and cut my miles down to 40. Even if your mind thinks you don't need it do it. I think this is important for us older runners to let the body recover. Core work is important as well, and some leg work will also help with injury prevention. I have only been running 6 days a week a little over a year, and I think it has taken that long for my body to adapt as well. I need a 3:20 to qualify, I think I am there - I just have to stay healthy and work on the mental part of it.

From flatlander on Fri, Jul 09, 2010 at 18:09:52 from 198.207.244.102

I think you are there too. I need to start doing recovery weeks more diligently, that would undoubtedly help.

Yep, I am signed up for the Steamtown marathon on 10/10/10. So far injury free and feeling pretty good.

I would rather have that fancy jacket that you are wearing in your pic. :-)

Parked at the springs - tried to be there a bit early as I wanted to get in an extra mile before I ran to runtex to meet the group.  I had about 3 extra minutes so not that much time.  I thought it would be tight but hoped that the group would not take off at 5:45 but a bit later.  I ended up 2.6 or so before I got to Runtex and the group had just walked out the door of the annex.  We did another 4 miles easy followed by 3 @ tempo pace.  I ran a 1.6 cool down back to the pool.  Finished with a couple long strides at 5k pace.  I was disappointed in my tempo pace - I am not sure why I found it so hard - it was difficult to keep my heart rate under control - it must have been the heat and humidity.  I feel that I was running stronger a few weeks ago.  Tempo pace: 7:05, 7:09, 6:51.

What a difference a week makes - last week's 18 mile run was grueling - today was much better.  Last week's course was much harder though.  This week I started at my house and ran to downtown, getting in some nice stretches of downhills in preparation of Steamtown.  I did hit a couple of good climbers too.  I met up with the group's route at mile 10.  The positive part was that I only stopped at one water stop and that was to refill one of my bottles.  I ran the whole way by myself as well. Carried flasks of Cytomax and it worked very well for me. Overall pace was 8:10 so 30 seconds off my BQ pace.  Splits:  9:13, 8:27, 8:12, 8:21, 8:20, 8:09, 8:26, 8:04, 8:08, 8:11, 8:03, 8:03, 8:08, 7:59, 8:02, 7:56, 8:00, 7:43.  Followed by strides.

I'm just curious, why are you working out specifically hip flexors and abductors?

From derhammer on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 09:52:40 from 192.156.110.32

Hi Jason,

Strong hips and core really help with running. If you go to this site (which is a wealth of information)you will see links to specific exercises on the right for running specific muscles. They show treadmill running but it can be applied to running in general. I personally like the cable exercises. You don't have to go crazy with the weight. I feel that these types of exercises has helped me stay injury free as well.

Good luck!

I had this sharp back pain since Thursday - I think I did something while tearing out bamboo roots in our back yard.  I still managed to run Friday and Saturday - but the pain was enough to keep me awake at night.  It even hurt to breathe and expand my lungs.  I took yesterday off and thought about taking today off as well.  But I decided since the strain was not caused by running then running it would aggravate it.  I went out at lunchtime - it was sunny and hot - heat index of 94 degrees.  I managed a pace of 7:40's to 8:10's.  My theory about my back was correct, I did not make it worse, in fact, in some strange way the running helped loosen it up a bit.

Tough workout today.  I ran 4 and a half miles easy followed by hill workout.  4 sets of 1 x 200m hill, 1 x 250m hill, 1 x 320m, I ran the downs pretty fast so I did not have much recovery between sets.  I got through 3 full sets before taking a break for water and letting my HR come down a bit and then finished the last set followed by 3 x backward up the hill and 3 hill sprints (total 4 miles.)  Ran 4 miles easy to finish and a dip in the springs afterward for a nice cool down.  Counting the uphill as threshold miles.  I am walking around work now with pretty sore legs. That's a good thing in my book.

Warm and humid am.  Legs still a bit fried from the Tuesday's hill workout.  I decided to eschew the group workout this morning and do my own thing.  Dan and I were going to meet up and that did not pan out either.  So I stayed up north.  I have been wanting to get at least a couple good MGP miles on a nice long down hill to prepare for Steamtown.  I ended up running an out and back for 2 miles as warm up and then heading out down Jollyville and then 360.  360 allows a nice 2 mile down stretch and it was good getting a feel of pace vs effort.  The only problem with this route is when done with the MGP there is a 1/4 mile hill with a gradient of at least 12% waiting, followed by a lesser hill before it levels out some.  This was tough after a good effort MGP run, but excellent training nonetheless.  Overall MGP pace was 7:28. Splits: 7:30, 7:30, 7:27, 7:40, 7:17, 7:24, 7:27, .5@ 7:30.

20 miles today - warm and slightly humid.  The plan was to make it through and not worry about pace too much.  We hit lots of hills.  I had my garmin stopped between miles 11 and 16 for some reason.  I practiced not stopping at any of the water stops.  I waited briefly at a couple for the runners I ran with, but skipped the last 3 - 4 stops.  I had my fuel belt on so I had my own water/cytomax.  Tried to pick up the pace on the last 4-5 miles - hit a couple 7:50's - 8:00's, the majority of the first miles were 8:20 - 8:30 pace.  Overall pleased as I am feeling pretty good right now and in the past these types of runs would wear me out completely. Recovery miles during lunchtime.  94 degrees and full sun.  I ran around a trail near my work.  It is only a .6 mile loop - very boring - but consists of bark mulch and crushed granite, which makes a great recovery run surface.  Some portions are heavlly shaded by trees and that makes for a nice respite from the searing sun.

Well, this was somewhat disappointing.  I think that running on the trail of crushed granite - even though some is hard packed - takes quite a few seconds off of pace.  Some have said as much as 10 seconds, they could be right.  I say this because my perceived effort at say a 7:10 pace on the trail is much greater than that on pavement.  Today it felt like I was hitting 6:50s and I was not close, while Tuesday I knocked out 8 miles in the same range with no problem what so ever.

I woke up late but arrived early enough to get in a mile and a half and then took off with the group.  We did 3 miles easy followed by what was supposed to be a 6 mile progressive run but basically turned into another steady state run and I had to stop briefly at the end of mile 4 to tie my shoe and let my HR come down a bit, and walked a little bit at the end of mile 5 before finishing it up.  Again, my HR was pretty high and it felt like our pace was much higher that it was.

It could also be that I was not fully recovered from Tuesday's run also.

7:40, 7:31, 7:13 (so far so good) 7:20 (oops, wrong way) 7:12, 7:15.  - Nothing under 7:00 pace.

Long run point to point today.  Nice run until about the 11 mile mark.  We had just crossed the street when we heard a large noise - it sounded like a car hit a board or something.  I turned around and it was a runner from our group that was hit.  I just saw her sprawled out in the street.  I ran to her and got her to sit down on the curb and to stay still.  Another runner that I was running with came up and we both got her to scoot back a bit off the street.  A bicyclist was near and had a phone.  We stayed with her until the ambulance, police and fire truck arrived.  She was in shock but talking.  The side of the car had hit her and the mirror had come completely off.  She was bleeding in a few spots and probably broke a couple ribs - well, I hope I don't have to go through that ever again.

Other than that excitement the run was good. 9:30, 8:51, 8:08, 8:04, 8:04, 7:52, 7:51, 7:53, 7:47, 7:59, 7:59, 7:47, 8:05, 7:52, 7:44, 7:39, 7:38, 7:46, 7:32, 7:14.

In Omaha visiting family.  Warm and humid morning - not the escape from the Texas weather that I had hoped for.  I ran 5 miles to a local lake with a paved path around it.  I ran the full 7 mile loop plus the 3 mile loop and then ran 5 back to the house.  The sun came up over the lake and warmed things up considerably.  The 5 miles to the lake consisted of some long up hills which were a killer.  Overall, though, I got my 20 mile run in.

Staying at a state park for a few days.  I ran 2 miles from our cabin to the park entrance and then took a highway for 5 miles to a small town and then came back.  The road had some killer climbers - not exceptionally steep hills but long.  On the way back I looked at my watch at the bottom and again at the top - exactly 1 mile of uphill.  I ran the 10 miles as close to MGP as I could - overall 7:30 pace for the 10 miles.

It was raining when I woke up but then it stopped.  I got about a 1/4 mile from the cabin and it poured.  I ran under a tree and waited and watched the sky.  The rain stopped and the sky cleared a bit so I took off.  I ran out the park and took the highway in another direction from my MGP run.  On the way back the clouds moved in and there was lightning.  I picked up the pace as one could imagine and made it to the park admin building and hid under an overhang for a few minutes.  The rain stopped and I ran 1.5 miles back to the cabin with a fartlek of 30 seconds fast with 30 seconds slow.

Drove to the lake and ran the lake loop twice.  I decided to try something a bit different this run.  I ran one mile easy followed by one mile at MGP and repeated until I had run 15 miles.  The first MGP mile was too slow to count as I was not warmed up enough.  Around mile 3 I wanted to drive back home and go back to sleep but I plugged away and ended up feeling pretty good.  Overall happy with this type of run. Welcome back. Were you in Texas or did you manage to get out of the heat?

From derhammer on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 14:45:16 from 70.113.115.116

We travled back to my hometown of Omaha NE. I caught a couple cool mornings of 68-70 degrees but that was it. Humidity was high as well. Daytime highs were anywhere from 84 to 95 degrees. How is your ankle and training?

From flatlander on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 15:38:37 from 198.207.244.102

Well, a little cooler anyway. My sister lives in Omaha with her family and I have been there a couple of times, seems like a nice town. Ankle is doing well, thanks for asking. I was pretty much in the zone mileage-wise last week and had a good day today. Actually starting to improve my pace a little bit despite the heat, good feeling not having to wait until October.

4 mile warm-up and met up at the soccer fields entrance.  The main group was not there but the early group was.  So I ran with them for 3 laps.  They were on their 3rd lap.  I finished my other 2 laps with the larger group.  I ended up running 5 x 2k (true 2k's - I noticed the larger group was cutting their 2k's short) followed by 2 miles cool down.  I ran the first 3 slightly slower than 10k pace and picked it up on the last 2.  2k times:  1 - 8:18 (6:40 pace), 2 - 8:22 (6:44 pace), 3 - 8:27 (6:47 pace), 7:45 (6:12 pace), 7:35 (6:05 pace).

Wow - we have not had a cool morning like this morning since April.  Somewhere around 68 degrees and very low humidity.  We ran a point-to-point course today.  I ran 2 miles and then met up with the group.  Total of 23 miles.  It was crazy because I did not struggle at all until maybe the last couple miles.  Felt great afterward.  Dip in the springs to cool down.  Splits:  9:12, 8:16, 8:25, 8:27, 8:13, 8:05, 7:51, 8:08, 8:01, 7:53, 7:53, 7:45, 7:38, 7:37, 7:40, 7:35, 7:37, 7:16, 7:18, 6:55, 7:15, 7:20, 7:12.

Good job, that is an amazing run. You are getting a big payoff for a lot of hard miles in the heat. Are you from PA, or did you pick Steamtown because it is so fast? Looks like a great race.

From derhammer on Sat, Aug 28, 2010 at 18:03:16 from 24.28.82.222

Thanks for the encouragement. I picked Steamtown because the hills of the Austin marathon killed me :-) And it was warm as well. My three marathons have all been in Texas - Dallas was 80 degrees at the start and both Austin marathons hit 70's by the end in full sun. I am fed up with running in Texas and wanted a fairly fast marathon with a good chance of cool weather. I also wanted a point-to-point with a good number of runners but not a huge crowd. Steamtown seemed to fit all of those criteria. When is your marathon again?

The group had a "race" day for a workout.  Basically a 10 mile loop around the town lake trail.  Some ran faster than 1/2 marathon pace, some around 1/2 marathon pace and some at MGP.  I figured I would start a bit slow and pick up the pace but I felt good and fell in with a bit faster group.  I started fading from them around mile 4 but maintained my pace.  That bad part was that I was alone at that point.  I did not stop for water or anything so I felt pretty good about making it through.  The weather was humid and the trail of crushed granite slows the pace a bit as well.  The last couple miles were a bit of a mental struggle.  I ran 2.5 miles warm up - 10 miles hard and then 1.5 miles cool down.  Splits of 10 miles:  7:15, 6:57, 6:55, 7:09, 7:04, 6:53, 7:05, 7:19, 7:20, 6:50.  (Miles 8 and 9 were a good mental test to keep going, managed to pick it up on the last mile)

I plan on running the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on Nov 6th. I would love to BQ, but I have some doubts. There are days where I feel like 'this could happen' and there are days where I feel like... no way. I thought about running Steamtown before it filled up but did not think I could be ready in time.

This morning was not what I had hoped for.  I wanted to run some MGP miles but conditions were unfavorable.  I should have stuck to 7 or so easy since my legs are still not 100% after Monday's hard run.  But I did not know that until about mile 6 when I stopped for a minute to decide whether or not to continue or turn around and head back home.  I was at a point, however, where the distance would be the same, the only difference being that the route I had planned to take has a couple killer hills.  My legs were complaining but I decided to continue on to get some good steady down hill miles and then take on the hills.  I figured I would slow my pace a bit.  It was close to 80 degrees and 90% humidity and my body does not deal well in those conditions either.  I finished up the downhills and turned on the road leading back.  There were flashing lights and signs saying "Do not enter - turnaround."  We had 15" of rain the day before so I figured one of the low water crossings was flooded but was not sure how bad.  I continued on and found that the low bridge was covered in water and the blacktop was about 20 feet away as it had been washed off by the water.  It looked like I could cross along the edge - water was flowing quickly but only 12 inches deep.  Where the road was though it was about 2-3 feet deep and I knew if I went in there it would not be good.  At this point there was no way I was going to turn back - it was mile 9 and going back would add about 5 more miles and there would be some significant climbs.  I took my shoes off, tied them together and hung them around my neck.  I put one foot in to judge the force of the water and thought it was doable.  I slowly made my way across and put my shoes back on and continued on my way.  I would not have done it if I did not think that I could have made it.

This was a pretty tough run and I just was not into it mentally - I wish I would have slept in instead.  Hopefully I can recover enough over the next day and a half to be ready for Saturday's 22 mile run.

Splits:   9:40, 8:12, 7:51, 7:38, 7:43, 7:50, 7:50, 8:01, 8:50(hills), 9:07(tired), 8:27, 7:30.

Last 20+ mile long run.  We ran some good rollers going out and coming back.  The last 2 miles were some of the hardest miles I have run.  After the run my car said it was 87 degrees out.  The last 2 miles were pretty much in full sun and at that temp I can see why it was hard.  The plan was to run the first 10 miles at 60 seconds slower than MGP and drop from there.  I dropped the pace at around mile 4 though and then again at mile 12.  Spilts:  8:46, 8:22, 8:25, 8:04, 8:03, 8:09, 8:09, 8:10, 8:09, 8:04, 8:13, 7:52, 7:51, 7:43, 7:43, 7:35, 7:43, 7:47, 7:36, 7:34, 7:52(really struggled here), 7:40.

Close to 3 mile warm-up and met group.  The advice from the coach was to skip the hard workout because of the long run that we did on Saturday.  We ran the 7 mile loop and threw in 7 x 20 seconds @ 5k speed with 40 seconds recovery during the last 2 miles.  I then ran back to Barton Springs pool and tacked on a little extra mileage to get to 12 for the morning.  Last mile and a half was around 7:30 pace.

Tuning phase of marathon training.  Time to get some leg turnover and speed in over the next couple of weeks.  2.35 miles warm up to the track and met up with the group.  I ran 10 x Yasso 800m with 2 mins active recovery in between.  For active recovery I would just jog down one side of the track and come back - .15 miles each time. I actually felt pretty good through all 10 repeats.  The intent was to complete each 800m at one's projected marathon time - so, a 3:10 marathoner would need to run each 800m @ 3:10 or a bit faster.

800m Splits:

3:08 (6:04 pace), 3:07 (6:01 pace), 3:09 (6:09 pace), 3:09 (6:09 pace), 3:08 (6:06 pace), 3:09 (6:09 pace), 3:10 (6:10 pace), 3:10 (6:10 pace), 3:10 (6:09 pace), 2:54 (5:40 pace)

The plan was to get in 10 @ MGP but ended up doing 8.  It was warm - 70's and humid (90%) of course and I had dead legs around mile 13 but was able to push through. I think Thursday's hard workout had something to do with it.  No water stops during MGP until mile 15.5 for about 30 secs to grab water and let my heart rate come down a bit.  I started out with a group but they were pushing the pace by mile 2 and I wanted to save a bit for the MGP miles so I slowed down a bit and ran with a couple other guys.  Splits:  9:10, 7:42, 8:12, 8:21, 8:08, 8:11, 7:54, 7:58, 8:01, 7:48, 7:12, 7:11, 7:38, 7:25, 7:28, 7:26, 7:38, 7:34.

I have been running through some nerve pain on my left knee and some hamstring issues on my right leg.  I have not mentioned anything on the blog.  I have just been running through them.  Anyway, my PT - who is a miracle worker with runners - has banned me from speed work for the next 2 weeks.  At this point all the training has been put in and the little to be gained over the next couple of weeks is not worth the risk.  So instead of doing tomorrow's scheduled workout I will probably run some MGP or a bit faster.   10 miles tomorrow and 12 on Saturday with an easy 5 in between will get me close to 50 for the week.  35-40 next week and 20 or so the week of the marathon.  Hopefully the reduction will give me a chance to get close to 100% in time for the race.

Endurance/Stamina workout this morning.  Stayed close to home.  Knee and hammy felt fine, too.  90% humidity and mid 70's - got the heart rate going by the last 1000m for sure.. Mile warm-up to the track followed by 3 sets of 3x1000m.  First set at MGP, drop the second set to HGP, and finally the third set to 10k pace.  400m active recovery in between each 1000m - no stopping allowed during workout.  1 mile cool down back home.  This workout was probably harder running alone vs. running with the group.  Probably would have run a bit faster, too.  Oh well, the intent of the workout was to be able to mentally get through, so mission accomplished.

First set:

1000m @ 4:36 (7:24 pace), 1000m @ 4:30 (7:14 pace), 1000m @ 4:30 (7:14 pace)

Second set:

1000m @ 4:18 (6:55 pace), 1000m @ 4:18 (6:55 pace), 100om @ 4:20 (6:58 pace)

Third set:

1000m @ 4:14  (6:48 pace), 1000m @ 4:09 (6:40 pace), 1000m @ 4:09 (6:40 pace)

In other unrelated news my 7 year old son is really into me taking him to school on my motorcycle.  We only live a half mile away and travel on neighborhood streets and never exceed 30 MPH.  He even has his own helmet.  He really gets a kick out of it.

Very good workout, I would call it a speed workout, but that's what I call anything other than long and slow. Sounds like a good thing you have going with your son.

It was on the edge of being a speed workout - to me speed is 5k pace or faster. At least that is how I justified it to myself for doing the workout, even against the advice of my PT. :-)

Completely messed up this morning.  Seems the course and starting spot was changed and I did not hear about it.  My phone alarm did not go off and I woke up at 6:05 having to be downtown at 6:30.  I made it but when I showed up no one was there.  Fortunately Margaret who I run with also did not get the notice.  So we ran the course together.  We missed a turn and our 12 mile run turned into close to 13 miles. The plan was to run the last 6 @ MGP but we dropped the last 1.75 close to half marathon pace.

Good run nonetheless - it was nice getting to 6 miles and only having 6 more to go.  Splits:

8:27, 8:25, 8:25, 8:02, 8:09, 7:55. 7:57, 7:28, 7:35, 7:14, 7:12, 6:50, 6:50.

Very easy miles on the soft trail at lunchtime. I am trying to stay healthy at this point and not take any unnecessary risks.  Target for this week is 35-38 miles.

Cold front last night blew out the humidity.  First time since April that I did not come back from a run soaked.  In fact, my shorts and shoes were dry!

Good call on the running. Steamtown, is what, 13days? Hey do you like your Newtons? I have looked at them, just curious of someone who actually runs in them to see what you thought before I would buy a pair.

From derhammer on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 12:34:33 from 65.67.40.73

Dan, the only Newton's that I like are the Sir Issac's. I have tried the higher end ones and sent one pair back and I think I will send the latest pair back as well. I bought them because I got a 25% discount from roadrunnersports.com and a fellow runner liked his. Honestly, with the Launch and the Kinvara available for $70 a pop, there is no reason the spend twice as much on Newton's. BTW - if you are a VIP member on roadrunnersports.com you get free shipping and you have 60 days to try a pair. You can return them even if you have run in them.

I have a pair of Kinvara's and Launch and like them both so thanks for the thoughts. I will continue down that path, since I always wondered if they were really worth the extra $$

Tomorrow is last substantial workout - 20mins at MGP, 10 mins @ HMGP and 10 x 1 min fast 1 min easy.  Not too stressful and 10 days from marathon.

This morning's workout went by the wayside as the group ran it Monday instead.  One the agenda was 6 x 800m's which I declined.  I don't need to risk an injury or aggravate anything at this point.  We ended up doing 10 miles with 6 easy and last 4 at MGP - nothing too fancy. After a quick question to other runner's in my group I got 2 strong endorsements for Airrosti - http://www.airrosti.com/  I made an appointment and went in yesterday.  I was diagnosed with a minor tissue problem - no strains or tears so that is good.  The Dr. worked on my hammy/glute and lower back.  Afterward I saw the therapist and we did some foam roller exercises and stretches.  Finally they applied KT tape to the affected area.  Instructions were to ice it a few times and run today in order to get the blood flowing.  I was leary about doing so but went out at lunch for a 30 minuter run on the soft trail.  I felt some very minor pain right where the glute and hamstring muscle connect.  The rest of the hamstring was fine.  At mile 2.5 everything felt really good.  Now, if it will feel good on Sunday at a 7:20 pace is another story.  Still, it is a positive sign.

I have pretty much pulled out all the stops in treating this: excellent diet, liquid amino acids to assist in tissue repair, lots of vitamins, lots of ice, 2 days of complete rest, sleeping with compression tights, using the "stick" to roll out the leg muscles, stretching, seeing a PT, KT tape - I think that about does it.  If the above does not get me back to 100% nothing will.

If I feel good I will go out again tomorrow for a 3ish mile run, possibly Thursday, rest Friday and 2 or so easy miles on Saturday.

Race: Steamtown Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:27:10
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
4.0022.200.000.0026.20

As far as the race I am still at a loss at explaining what happened.  I had put in consistent 60 mile weeks since April.  I trained hard but smart for the marathon.  I had run 4 – 5 long runs over 20 miles, etc., etc..  I was pretty sure with all the work that I had put in that I would BQ this time around.  At the very least I would PR.  In the end I ran 2-3 minutes slower that I did at Austin which was in warmer weather and a tougher course.

Steamtown is billed as a PR course with an 800 elevation drop over the first 10 miles and flat until 23 when the first of three hills comes.  I had trained on a lot of hills and did quite a bit of downhill running.  I thought my quads would be fine but in the end they took quite a beating.  The advice from past runners was to go out slow and don’t run down the hills too fast – bank energy not time.  I thought I did a good job of this except for mile 4 but was able to slow back down after that.

I ran for a few miles with a guy that had run 14 Steamtowns and was going for a 3:20.  I said, "Great, I will stick with you."  He retorted that of the 14 he had only run 2 of them correctly.  I was worried.  As it turns out the course is indeed tricky.

The weather at the start was low 30’s – perfect. I remember seeing 38 degrees at a bank that we ran by at about mile 5 or 6.  It could not have been any nicer.  I had disposable gloves, hat and long sleeved shirt that were all tossed by mile 3 or so after I warmed up.  The course itself was beautiful and runs through a few small towns, each with great crowd support.  All of the fall foliage was in full color as well.  There is a great section around mile 15 that goes off on a trail and runs by a river.  This is about 2 miles long and then joins the road again.  Miles 19 – 21 were quite desolate as the course ran by a industrial park.  The last few miles head into the city and ultimately downtown.

I ran the first 3 miles 25 seconds off pace to warm up and to avoid taking off on the decline.  I got into a grove after that and crossed the half way point at about 1:38 ish – right on target.  I was running really good until mile 20 came along.  This was to be expected though - it's a marathon afterall.  By 22 though I walked a couple times and by the hill on mile 23 my legs were pretty much toast.  I kept pushing – walking a bit and then running.  It was not good.  The hills at the end killed me.  I was about 30 feet from the finish when my legs dropped out from under me and I landed on my knees.  Immediately I felt the arm of another runner reach down and grab me, he put my arm around his shoulder and would not let go.  He helped me across the finish line with my noodle legs trying to run.  Recounting this story still brings a tear to my eye – that someone would be selfless enough to reach down and help another runner.  Pretty amazing.  I will never know his name but will always remember what he did for me. (Yeah, I am a softy.)

Here are my splits:

7:48, 7:49, 7:50, 7:19, 7:39, 7:31, 7:36, 7:28, 7:34, 7:29, 7:35, 7:29, 7:24, 7:25, 7:21, 7:35, 7:26, 7:36, 7:31, 7:41, 7:49, 8:04, 8:41, 8:35, 9:32, 9:45, 2:19.

My only reasoning at this point is lack of calories at the end.  I had my fuel belt of Cytomax with me which amounted to 3 GU’s and had a 16 oz disposable bottle that I drank from the first couple miles that was another GU.  I drank water at every stop but ran out of my bottled supply of Cytomax at around 18 - 19 I think. I remember drinking one cup of Gatorade after that but not sure when.  I had GU’s with me as well but forgot about them.  I don’t think I drank any water or Gatorade past 21 or so – I was struggling so much mentally that I just did not think about it.  I am sure this contributed to some of my problems at the very end, but I can’t say it was the complete cause.  Next time I think I will tape a couple GU’s to my forehead so I don’t forget.  Other than that I can't figure out what went wrong.  I am pretty let down but I am sure I will get over it.

I was hoping one of us would get a good race! At least yours wasn't a total meltdown but I certainly feel for you. You can search for reasons but never sure exactly what happened, I guess. My sister has been on my case big time about bad fueling habits, as in none. I train hungry and that is the way I race because I am more afraid of a sick stomach than running out of gas. But I am going to have to re-think that. It is possible you were seeing similar issues. As for the angel at the end, you are no more a softy than any of us. One of the great things about running. Great training, you are a good runner.

From Dan on Tue, Oct 12, 2010 at 20:06:41 from 24.209.83.20

I agree man. You are a great runner and some of your training runs have inspired my training. I think fueling could have held you back or some days we have it better than others. Do not let it keep you down - I know, easier said than done, but look at the volume of training you have done. Impressive.

From jtshad on Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 11:54:07 from 204.134.132.225

Sorry that the race did not go as planned. It does sound like you ran out of fuel at the end. You started off well, but probably didn't get enough fuel in early and once you are past the point of true need, it is too late.

Your training was great, keep it up and the BQ will come. Practice the mental apsect of the race on your long runs and focus on the fueling to avoid the bonk at the end.

The running community is awesome, the people are one of the best reasons to run and race in my book!

Cool morning.  Aerobic miles - low 8:00 - 8:20's. I ran early so it was dark.  At mile 5 a truck turned the corner towards me so I moved off into the grass and kept running. I do this often.  I was at a pretty good pace at this point as well.  All of a sudden I smacked right into the end of dead tree branch that was sticking down and pointed right at me.  I have about 6 lacerations.  I bled profusely.  Fortuntaely I found a crunched up paper towel about 5 feet away.  What luck.  I was able to use it to stop some of the bleeding.  After about 5 minutes I got going again.  I passed up the short cut to my house and finished my run like any commited runner would do. :-)

I got home and put ice water on the cuts and looked in the mirror - not good.  I woke my wife up and then I drove myself to the ER.  They cleaned everything up and glued the 3 major cuts back together.  It still hurst a little.

Note to self:  wear the running headlight that I have!

Wonderful, cool morning.  High 40's to start.  I parked away from the race so I did not have to deal with parking.  I ran 2 miles from my car to the start for a warm up.  I started out pretty well - 5:58 for the first mile - I don't think I am going to wear my garmin anymore - too much inaccurate information - it said I was running faster than I was so I slowed a bit.  Mile 2 was 6:10 and Mile 3 has a nice hill during the last part and I slowed even more.  I remember last year almost dying on this hill but this year I powered up it.  Still, I had slowed again, 6:20 or so - not good.  At the crest of the hill we turned a corner and had the last sprint to the end.  My garmin says I ran .17 at a 4:54 pace, not sure, but I know I was running as hard as I could.  I have not run a 5k since 6 months ago or so.  I am pretty sure if would run more often and get my strategy down I could break 19 no problem.  Since I sprinted at the end I know I had enough in me to get through miles 2 and 3 at a faster pace.

Last year I ran this at a 19:38 pace so I PR'd this course by 19 seconds and I just ran my marathon 4 weeks ago.  I wasn't sure what to expect today but I am pretty happy with the results.  And I finished first in my age group to boot!  Total number of runners - 1,739.

First race in my new Saucony Kinvaras and I loved them.

Ran 2 easy miles back to the car and stopped by Starbucks on my way home!  Nice way to start a morning. :-)

Good race, I'm pretty sure you can readily break 19 on your current training with more experienced tactics (I'm in the same boat tactics-wise). Was the start crowded? My 5K was crowded a few weeks ago and it was the same sponsor. Gotta love those age group wins!

From derhammer on Mon, Nov 08, 2010 at 14:07:40 from 192.156.110.34

Yes, it was crowded - there were over 1,700 runners. I was up front though so I was not affected. They had the walkers start 30 mins later.

Yes, that is the plan. I pretty much decided on running it a couple weeks after Steamtown. The course is reasonable, a few good rollers in the beginning but the last 8-9 are pretty fast. The goal is to get to 18-19 mile mark in good shape having survived the hills.

I decided to stay in the neighborhood and run some hills in the second half of the run.  My legs are tired lately - definitely going to cross train tomorrow.  At mile 6 I had a decision to turn around to go the hard way, aka hills, home.  I decided to tough it out and tackle the hills.

Looks like I am back.  Woke up early this morning and looked at the thermometer that receives its info from satellite - it said 55 degrees.  It lied.  I had put on shorts and a shirt and found that it was really cold and windy - probably in the 40's.  I am glad I didn't wear a singlet.  Once I am on the road I don't like to go back home so I just toughed it out  a bit.  Once I warmed up it was OK.

9 miles around 8:30's - legs felt pretty good - no real pain in the glute so that  is good.  Still, I don't plan on running any intervals this week just to be on the safe side.

Thanks. My plan this time around is less miles and one hard workout a week with MGP at the end of my long runs. High mileage just wears me out and I want to try to get to the starting line as strong and as fresh as possible. I am not sure what the magical combination is for me - still trying to figure that out! :-)

Wonderful and cool morning for a race.  Temps were low 40's but there was a pretty good wind so temps felt like 30's.  This is a very hilly course with quite a few long climbers and some short but steep hills as well.  I actually showed up without any big expectations given the course and some - albeit very little - soreness in the glutes and IT bands.  I ran with a good friend and the plan was to hit 7:00's the first half and try and pick it up in the later half.  I still race a bit conservatively in that I am always afraid that I will run out of juice at the end.  I pretty much held back until mile 10 which came at the end of what seemed like a never ending hill.  The wind was a factor in the first 4 miles and the last 2 miles.  From 11 - 13 it seemed like we ran straight into it.  It was not gale force by any means but enough to know it was there.  I tried to push the last couple miles.  I am pretty happy with my overall time given the course and wind.  I wish I could have run 10 seconds faster so I would get under 1:32.  I didn't do a cool down run after and I will probably pay the price in some soreness.  I did stretch so that should help. I ended up with a negative split. It is pretty easy from my splits to tell where the hills were and the wind at the end.

Splits: 7:00, 7:07, 7:08, 7:01, 7:03, 7:06, 7:00, 6:47, 6:58, 7:00, 7:07, 7:10, 6:55, 6:04. Overall pace 7:02.

As a side note I ran this 3 years ago when it was a 20k and my overall pace was 9:45.

Great job DH, those are even splits, obviously you were in total control even dealing with the ups and downs and the wind. That is a dramatic difference in the average pace as well.

Nice cold morning - 30's - still ended up running in my singlet from mile 5 on.  I kept my gloves on though. :-)

I misjudged the out and back distance because I added a loop on to the beginning.  I wanted to get in 12 miles but ended up over 13.  I know what they mean by running on tired legs but felt  good by mile 9-10 when I picked up the pace a bit.

Overall pace in  the 8:40's.

I am in love with my Kinvaras - I don't think I can go back to big clunky shoes again. My two nagging injuries have all but disappeared since I switched to these shoes exclusively.

(40 minutes spinning at lunch to get the blood flowing in the legs.)

I have liked the Kinvara's as well, though I have used them mostly for racing.

Great run this morning, keep it up.

Have a very merry Christmas!

Thanks, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family as well.

I am not sure of the wisdom in running in the Kinvara's exclusively, but I do plan to at least try them out on a long run.

Great news about your shoes, I am getting to the point where my legs feel much better after a run in light shoes, no matter the distance. Good run today.

Great, cool morning.  I was on the fence as to run 15-16 or 18.  I decided that since I did not run a long run last week, albeit a quality run at the 1/2 marathon, that I would shoot for 18.  I left the group around mile 7 and continued on alone.  I only had on GU but drank some gatorade at the water stops every 4 miles.  At mile 9 I decided to pick it up and try to finish at MGP.  The last 2 miles were pretty difficult.  I ran Exposition @ miles 14-16 which consists of some significant climbers.  At times I thought I had a 7:20 or so pace but in the end my spits were not that fast.  I ran the first 9 around an 8:00 average and the back 9 at 7:34 average.  I am giving myself some slack due to the 1/2 marathon 6 days ago plus as pretty hard track workout on Thursday.  This week's mileage looks high due to the race last Sunday - normally I would not have run on Sunday.  Heading down to South Pardre Island for the next 6 days.  I should be able to keep up the running while down there.  I do not plan on running on Christmas day but a few of us are meeting up on Sunday for an 18 mile run.

The Kinvaras held up nicely on the long run today.   I am still not sure that I will run a marathon in them, though.

On the beach at South Padre Island.  The sand is hard packed enough to run on.  I ran 1 mile to the jetty and turned around - 4 miles up the coast and back for a total of 8 miles.  Threw in 100m strides at the end at 5k pace.  Great to be running along the water with the sun coming up.

Warm and humid - still dark out - a bit strange running on the beach in the dark.  After 3 miles it was dawn so I had some light.  7 miles on the beach - turning back into a strong wind - I got back on the main road at this point hoping there would be some cover from the buildings.  It was a bit of a help but the wind was still pretty stiff.  Easy miles around 8:00-8:10. Dropped the last 2.5 miles to 7:10, 7:05 and 6:47.  Cooled down .5 miles back to the condo.

I used the GPS to find a local High School to use the track.  6 am - dark and humid - mid 60's.  Ran 2.5 miles warm up followed by 4 "super sets" of 5 x 400m.  1 minute rest between 400's and 1 recovery lap between super sets.  This was a pretty grueling workout but satisfying.  It took a few laps to find the right pace - I did not use my GPS function - I used the stopwatch instead - so I had to pace of of 100m marks.

Set #1: 1:37 (6:30 pace) 1:35 (6:22 pace), 1:33 (6:14 pace), 1:32 (6:10 pace), 1:33 (6:14 pace)

Yes, good run and good year. I joined the blog in June so my total mileage is higher than whats on here, but I wont hit 2500 either. What training plan are using? What is your next race or do you not have that planned?

From derhammer on Wed, Dec 29, 2010 at 12:14:04 from 65.67.40.73

Dan - the current plan is to run the Austin Marathon on Feb 20th. I have a hybrid plan that I am following - 1 speed session a week, 1 medium LR of 11-13 miles, and LR with increasing MGP miles on the end. For example, my last LR will be 20 miles with the last 14 at MGP. It will be my only 20 mile LR - the rest are between 15 and 18. I train with a local running group - they have 2 workouts a week plus an organized LR on Saturday. I run my medium LR in lieu of one group workout and go to the other workout. It depends what is on the schedule for the week. Interval workouts are 400m, 800m, 1000m, 2000m or mile repeats. Sometimes it will be a combo of distances and paces - a "ladder." I am also throwing in a lactate threshold run every 3 weeks or so instead of the medium LR. Something like 4 easy and 4-6 @ 1/2 Marathon pace. The other days are base or recovery runs. I am trying to run a "recovery" week every 3rd week - down to 45 miles or so. At this point I am experimenting to see what works best for my body. We'll see how it all works out in the end. :-)

Only 7 miles today on the trail.  Ran with the group but ended up running alone in the middle of two groups - not fast enough for the group ahead and too fast for the group behind.  We ran 2 miles warm-up followed by fartleks with 3 sets of  3min hard, 1 min easy, 2 min hard, 1 min easy, 1 min hard, 1 min easy.  I then added a couple more fast minutes during the last mile.  Fast parts run @ 6:10 to 6:38 pace.  Long run tomorrow instead of Saturday.

The plan today was to run 15-16 miles with the last 2.5 hard.  Well, that plan fell apart when the small group I was running with decided to push the pace a bit.  We hit some good hills from mile 2-5.  The other members turned around at 7 and my partner and me continued on to 8 and turned around.  We picked it up and ran the last few at a pretty good clip.  The last mile was hard for me - I was really dizzy at the end and had to sit down for a couple minutes.  Not good.  Only 4 hours of sleep last night and maybe bad nutrition?  Also ended up with a pretty good mileage week so that could have done something.  I was feeling strong up to that point.  Splits: 9:09, 8:53, 7:55, 8:07, 7:44, 8:00, 7:34, 7:42, 7:33, 7:23, 7:23, 7:24, 7:17, 7:18, 7:35, 7:35.
