Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

This is a really nice buildup you have going lately. Don't suppose you're running 3M?

Thanks, Joe.

No, I am not - you? The course isn't as fast as it used to be, but still pretty good. The way you have been running you could have a very good chance of breaking 1:20.

Legs are a bit beat up - 4.5 recovery miles on the trreadmill at lunchtime.

So my 8 year old daughter is doing Marathon kids again this year, but getting a bit competetive when she heard some kids in her class are working on their second marathon. So I had to take her to school tonight to run laps.  I have learned patience is needed when running with an 8 year old, but we managed 3 miles with multiple breaks.  The last mile went by pretty fast though as we were trying to come up with knock knock jokes.

Nice morning for a run - 46 degrees and calm.  I didn't have my watch but did have my runkeeper on my phone.  It only tells me average pace - I have not figured out how to get it to tell me mile splits - so after I ran a warm up I just ran faster and kept it there.  Didn't know my pace but wanted to be running low 7:00's and that's what I did.

8 miles easy around the trail, then took my kids to swimming, all the swim lanes were busy, so did core and weights and a couple more miles on the treadmill.

Well, this is hard but looks like I am moving to Strava -https://www.strava.com/login - seems like all the cool kids are there, at least most of my Austin running buddies.  I like how my Garmin automatcially uploads my workouts and all stats, so I don't have to manually type things in.  I'll miss this blog, but will check in periodically.

Anything epic coming up soon?

From derhammer on Thu, Feb 11, 2016 at 07:37:49 from 64.245.52.2

Flat - looking at http://www.littlemarathon.com/LittleMarathon/TunnelLite/default.asp in September or http://www.finishlinepros.com/P2CM_Info.html in October. I like the small race vibe and want to get under 3 - and both courses are favorable.

Haven't decided on anything yet though.

Trying out this plan as it makes a heck of a lot of sense to me: https://bridgerridgerun.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/how-to-run-a-3-hour-marathon-a-just-enough-training-approach/

I sure wish this blog would auto recognize links!

That's Rattle Trap's race! I've been meaning to get out there for @3 years, but stuff has come up every time. Someday.

Great MGP track workout, BTW!

That plan is interesting, have been thinking a lot about it. Seems to me you are well within range to make it work.

From derhammer on Sat, Feb 13, 2016 at 10:16:12 from 70.113.16.126

@Tom - there are 2 races - one in June and one in September - same course - different names.

@Flat - I'll let you know how it goes, lol. I think I am over achieving a bit with that pace but we will see if my body can handle it. I just need to make sure I keep those recovery days super easy and cross train some even. But I can tell you today when I started my MGP my legs automatically fell into pace without even thinking about it.

From Tom K on Wed, Feb 17, 2016 at 09:36:24 from 66.87.149.215

Who knew that if you want to run a certain pace for a race, you need to train at that pace? I feel like that is an obvious point that is seldom mentioned. And i appreciate the simplicity of it. I hope to someday naturally fall into my goal race pace.

This what I call a workout great work

From Jason D on Wed, Feb 17, 2016 at 18:28:32 from 68.80.27.222

Nothing wrong with a slow warmup. That's a solid marathon HR for sub-3:00 and better pace too.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Feb 17, 2016 at 20:24:54 from 107.77.100.28

Nice! That's about my upper distance limit at the track, well done.

My mile 1 is always that 'fast'. Heck of a track workout for sure.

OK, when I bend down my legs hurt - serious DOMS from the workout plus weight training.

14 mile long run to top Mt. Bonnel (250ft elevation gain over 600m) and back.    Definitely taking tomorrow off to see if my legs will come back to me.  Mile 13 was a 6:40 but couldn't muster any more.

You doing OK David?

From derhammer on Tue, Mar 15, 2016 at 09:09:44 from 70.113.16.126

Yes, all OK and thanks for asking. I thought I would be able to continue the double entry but it's been harder than I thought. My new Garmin syncs with my phone that automatically posts to Strava - so I have been keeping tracking of all my running and workouts on Strava.
