I had a busy morning and wasn't able to get out until after noon with temps approaching 90.  I went for 32 miles on the mountain bike about half on pavement and half on dirt. I took an extra water bottle and pushed the pace pretty good. The heat doesn't get you as bad on a bike because you're creating your own wind. I had one three mile climb though where there was just enough wind at my back to make no breeze at all. I had so much sweat dripping from my helmet and forehead that in seemed like it was raining on my quads as I pedaled. felt good to go back down into the breeze.

PM    Ran 6 miles late. Finished at 11:30. Ran fairly easy pace first 3 miles then did 4 x 35-45 second pickups then 1/4 mile at 5:40 pace on the way back. Overall pace was 8:05. Very dark night with no moon.

Before I read the last sentence, I was thinking it is probably pretty dang dark out there at night. Do you run with a head light or do you have street lights? I would be afraid of what might be waiting for me in the night.

Other than a couple of dairies that have lights and our church, there really is just whatever light come from the houses and there is only about 10 of them I go by. If there is a moon I don't take a light but when it's real dark like last night I carry a little flashlight about the size of your thumb [I've got a headlamp but prefer the small flashlight]. I mainly use it on the dirt road portions of my run where there may be rocks or pot holes. I usually just run without any light on the paved parts which may not always be smart in case a rock or something was laying in the road.

You run in the dark all winter what do you use?

I live in an area where there are street lights the whole way. I pretty much run right in my neighborhood anyway and there is plenty of light there. If we do venture out of the neighborhood in the dark there is one section we run in that has no lights and I don't like it at all. We used to go run at a state park near Vegas called Red Rock and that was always a bit scary, even with the headlamps.

We went out to Red Rock 3 years ago in February when the weather was nice and did some hiking. It was beautiful and looked like a nice place to run especially if you wanted to do some downhill/uphill and it was light.
