2 mile warmup with 0.5 hard.  3.24 miles in 19:16-ish, 5:55/mi, HR 169.  2+ mile cooldown & stretching.

Not an auspicious start to the new year.  ~45 seconds slower than last year.  Conditions were colder this year (~ 18F at the start) but I wasn't fighting a stomach bug.  Didn't taper or take the day prior off though and the course seemed a tad longer this year.  Garmin recorded 3.24 versus 3.15, so perhaps?  Anyway, the first mile felt pretty comfortable (too comfortable), the middle mile was eh, the final hard but manageable and the final .24 on the watch was near a 5/min pace, so a good kick.

The results?  Good question.  No times posted...evidently the cold weather caused a sticking malfunction on their tracking board.  The announcers called me as 3rd in my AG from their list, but mid-way through their announcements, another list was posted that had me 2nd AG (8th OA).  When I asked about it, I was told theirs was the official list.  When I pointed out that the other list was posted after they'd begun handing out awards, I was told their list of official, for now.  For now?  Really?  Whatever.

So there it is.  Turning 40 really does slow you down.

Nice job Dale. Don't sweat the slower time this year, still decent considering the no taper and colder temps and possible too long course. Always nice to get under 20 I think. And from what I've seen and experienced I don't think age factors start fully kicking in until you hit 45. I'll bet you've got a few PR and many nearly PR races left in you.

Good job! I was not far behind you. I might have even tried a little harder if I had known that your turning 40 would bump me out of 3rd place :)

Are you running the whole series this year?

LM warmup, 5.03 miles in 38:07, 7:35/mi, HR 157, 6 x Strides, 2 x Drills, core workout & stretching.

Aborted an attempt at 6x4 min on/2 min off Fartleks mid-way through the first 4 minutes.  Warmup felt okay, drills meh, and strides fine.  But by minute #2 of repeat #1 my legs were completely dead, lungs out of air, I was spent.  Stopped to collect myself for a few seconds, mentally tried to get back into the game, started back into the repeat and realized it was futile.  Punted on the hard workout, opting instead to finish 8 easy miles but started struggling with those another mile in.  Finally just settled for 5 with a couple of walk breaks.  Guess taking one day off after the race wasn't enough of a recovery, or I'm getting sick, or something is going on.  Hope it doesn't last.

A bit warmer out today....rains to arrive soon and wash the snow away.  Legs still feeling tired and running was an effort....felt uncoordinated and clumsy, especially in the left leg.  Got a bit better towards the end of the run and the hill sprints felt okay.

Mid-30s and clear.  Decent run up into Elbe hills.  Intended to go 10 miles over the top via the Ashford route, but after 1 mile of slow skating on the ice near the top, turned around and took a side route to extend the mileage past 20.  Plenty of good steep climbs that I took easy for the most part, so my legs felt surprisingly good by 18 and I decided to push the effort up to marathon pace for the last stretch.

30s & cloudy.  Roads a bit of a mess in spots after snow yesterday, but better than expected.  Only really affected the overall pace in a few spots.  Plan was for 6 repeats but I felt so good (well, okay, not really good, but not nearly as crappy as one normally feels after 5 repeats) that I decided to add a 7th and to push the mileage past 10.   Uphill ones were in the mid-to-upper 6 min range, up and down one at 6:05 and the downhill (last) at 5:35/mi, so I cannot complain.  In fact, the paces were pretty close or better than those I ran two weeks ago on 3 minute repeats.  The last couple of cooldown miles were a bit of a slog though and the legs were definitely tired.

Warm (53F) with some intermittent drizzle.  Nearly aborted this workout after the warmup.  Started the Strides/Drills and the legs were just beat.  Mentally, wasn't there.  Made it all the way back inside before I managed to berate myself enough to go for at least a couple of SS miles.  Took it 2 miles at a time and took a brief (15-20 sec) break between every 2 miles.  Boy, did I need it.  HR was up over last week and body just didn't want to cooperate.  The uphill was the worst, but the final 2 SS miles were still really hard to complete....legs felt like lead.  Pit stop before the cooldown miles.  Now I'm really wiped.

Rainy and cool (38F).   Warmup was slow, strides & drills felt good, but motivation was nearly non-existent.  Mile repeats in 6:38, 6:51, 7:13, and 6:20, with the first three uphill and the last a mix of up and downhill.  3 x 1 min on/off felt good.....short enough that breathing didn't become an issue and fast because they were either on the flats or downhill (5:25/mi, 4:59/mi, and 4:57/mi paces).  Cooldown was necessarily slow.

Late run again today.  Feeling tired and worn down.  Wanted to quit after the warmup, punted on the Strides/Drills and went straight into the Steady State.  Aside from tired legs/body, not bad.  A slower first mile but the rest were as fast if not faster and did not require the stops every 2 miles.  Legs were getting fried by miles 7 & 8 of the SS portion; otherwise I probably could've pushed through and done 10 SS miles.  But better to leave a bit in the tank.

Spent 7 hours yesterday pruning trees, hauling limbs away, raking and doing other yardwork.  We'll call that crosstraining the core and upper body.  Back a bit tweaked but okay.  Warmup slow but decent, drills pretty good, fast strides.  Repeats hurt plenty, more the heavy breathing than the legs getting tired (aside from the last downhill repeat....legs got pretty smoked on that one).  A smidgen faster than the same workout 2 weeks ago.

A good nights sleep.  Decent (shorts & long sleeve tech tee) weather.  Feeling pretty good aside from a small tummy-ache.  Good miles today.  Left hamstring/glute a bit tight for the first couple but things shook out well.  Uphill miles about average but the HR on those was low (mostly in the 140s) so when it came time to push the downhill return I kept the pace in the 6s.  Mostly the low 6s, aside from mile 9 where my concentration obviously drifted (plus, it was flatter than most).  A good medium workout.

A summer's day in January....sunny and 60s.  Nice easy run.  A bit tired so slow going but not too bad.  Hill Sprints not spectacular.  Two stops mid-run, one to chat with a neighbor out cutting up firewood and another so a neighbor could show me a bigger hill to run up.  Added some mileage to the run, but the breaks made up for it.  A bit more concerning is the pain on the underside/outside of my right foot when pressure is applied.  Need to break the ice out tonight.

Hurts to put weight on my foot today.  Managed to talk myself down from what probably would've been an ill-advised and short-lived run.  So here I sit pretty cranky, upset that I'm missing a run on our second unheard of 60 degree sunny day here in WA, hoping that whatever this is heals quickly.

Sorry to hear about the foot. Sure seems like it's harder than it should be for us 40+ guys to get into any good kind running rhthym for more than a few months. I hope it's just a 2 or 3 day issue for you. Do you think this is plantar fascia related? Having gone through my nasty PF rupture last year I hope it's not anything similar.

From Dale on Fri, Jan 28, 2011 at 11:09:53 from 69.10.215.11

Thanks. Yup, it gets easier and easier to hurt ourselves. I don't think its PF....had a fairly mild case last year and managed to run through it. This seems to be more to the outside bottom of the foot. But I've read that many of these types of injuries are typically because of tight calves, so I'm back to doing everything I can to stretch mine out.

Bummer about your foot. Have you seen a doc about it? I have a similar pain in my left foot caused by a morton's neuroma. A cortisone shot brought me a few months of relief, but now it's flaring up again.

From Dale on Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 18:52:58 from 69.10.215.11

No doc yet.....Frankly, haven't found them to be particular helpful if its a minor injury, which i'm still hoping for at this point. Definitely not a neuroma as its too far back and on the outside of the foot. It might be PF but its in a strange spot for that. It could also just be the pounding the outside of my feet take, because of my gait. Whatever it is, hopefully the rest and some additional stretching/strengthening will help.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 20:10:37 from 72.102.119.86

Ah, the wonders of the interweb.  Today, I diagnosed my foot pain as Cuboid syndrome.  Fortunately, when you get a "subluxation" of your cuboid bone, the treatment is highly successful and relatively easy....manual manipulation.  Fortunately for me, I've got a pretty sharp Chiropractor a short 5 minute drive away from my house who's very good at fitting in patients.  After a short phone consult and a quick drive into town, several "ahs" and "hmmms", there was a loud pop (my cuboid subluxation being "reduced") followed by a yelp (me hearing a loud pop coming from my foot) and immediate pain relief.  Unfortunately, the immediate relief was followed by some pretty substantial soreness about 30 minutes later, but definitely better.

Today's run was done at the direction of my chiropractor.  Well, okay, he said to go try it out and probably didn't mean 8 miles w/ hill sprints, but hey, who's counting?  Decent run, slow turnover on the hill sprints, and very little pain until the end of the run.  Will treat with ice and see if it recedes or if I need another trip in perhaps after a run tomorrow.

LM warmup, 1.5 miles total.

Foot felt okay before the run but 1/4 mile in was killing me.  Stopped and started the walk of shame back to the house.  About a dozen steps later and it felt fine.  Turned around and got another 1/4 mile before walking back to the house with some lingering pain this time.  Headed down to the chiro, who examined it, did a minor manipulation, then tried a tape job to support the cuboid.  This worked to an extent.....the pain on essentially resolved on that spot and I got about 1/2 mile into a run before the PF started hurting in the center of the foot towards the heel.  A tad over 1 mile total with bearable but not great pain levels.

A work trip over the next couple of days was going to curtail my running anyway, so taking the next 2 days off isn't a stretch.  I seriously hope I don't need more because Boston is looming and I'm not anywhere close to race shape.  Unfortunately, I have a sinking feeling that its going to take more than a few days to get this fixed.

After 4 days of complete rest, the right foot has now been pain free for 2 days, so an easy run was in order.  Wound up being 2 x 4 mile runs when I stopped to introduce myself to a neighbor I'd not met before at the 4 mile mark.  Foot felt good the entire way, although the typical high HR and felt-like-I've-never-run-before legs were present.

Sunny, crisp and dry.  Started off as an 8 mile run where I was planning on throwing in some random fartleks, but I evidently crave structure and after feeling okay on the first surge, decided on an ascending ladder with a fast short one at the end.  Felt good enough to extend the run by 2 miles, so all in all a really good run and perhaps a sign that not all is lost.

First long run in a couple of weeks.  Managed a good run in decent weather, although I could've done without the sustained wind gusts of 20-30 MPH.  Decent on the climb outbound, felt tired by the turnaround so the last half was mentally getting myself to maintain a decent clip without dropping into a walk.

At 8am this morning, I pulled over the car (on the way to puppy kindergarden, week 5) to sign up for the Cascade Crest 100, when registration opened.  Good thing I did because *after* kindergarden, I checked and registration had already closed.  So its a good thing that I was able to spend nearly $200 so I can run 100 miles in August.  Yeah.

LM warmup, 10.01 miles in 1:16:35, 7:39/mi, HR 162, w/ 2 mile warmup, 4 x 1 mile repeats (6:28, 6:01, 6:11, 6:14) w/ 3 min rest, 3 x 1 min on/1 min off (5:11, 5:21, 5:22/mi pace), 2 mile cooldown, core workout & stretching.

Spent yesterday traveling from WA to VA, 1 canceled flight, 1 delayed flight, re-routed to a different airport and a long car drive turned a fairly routine flight into an 18+ hour odyssey.  Today, stiff winds blowing off the river made running in certain directions tough.  The first mile repeat was slower because of the winds but because also because I skipped the strides/drills.  #2 was fast with the wind at my back for about 40%.  #3 was mostly neutral, but #4 had about 60% into the wind (average pace for that part was 6:51/mi), 10% wind neutral and 30% with a pusher wind.  All the 1 min repeats were fast and strong and into the headwinds.  All in all given the 2-day sleep debt, the winds, and travel stresses, very happy with this workout.

More snow outside so the treadmill was the only option to get a quality workout in.  Plus, I wasn't keen on slipping and sliding in the snow. Turns out the treadmill was actually fairly pleasant......for a treadmill.  Interval 1 was at a 6:32/mi pace, adjusted to 5:48/mi for the incline.  That seems awful fast.  Interval 2 was a 6:27/mi pace, adjusted to 5:45/mi.  That seems awful fast.  Interval 3 was a 6:25/mi pace, adjusted to 5:46/mi.  That seems awful fast.  Notice a trend.  So either the equivalent pace chart I downloaded ages ago from hillrunner.com is skewed, my treadmill speeds/inclines are suspect, gravity isn't directly downwards, or I'm in much better shape today than I was yesterday.  I'm guessing it isn't #4.  But I'll take a good solid workout.

Not bad for treadmill miles. At the 90 minute mark, the nausea started again.  Ate a cliff bar, which helped some.  Left foot started hurting around mile 13 and I decided to finish on the treadmill since the goal was to get the mileage in and save the body for more running next week.  Pushed the pace over the treadmill miles but really felt like crap.  Not sure what gives, but these long runs are still the ones that give me the most problems this training cycle.

The treadmill is helping me run the higher mileage by keeping my muscles, tendons and ligaments healthy, but my legs and feet aren't getting adjusted as well to the beating they'll take on the road.  I suppose being able to run the mileage is better than being hurt, but at some point I'll need to get some more road mileage or I'll fall apart in Boston.

Wasn't feeling too into this workout, but I needed to get one in on the roads badly.  The strides and drills helped to perk up the legs, but the mile repeats were still brutal.  4 uphill (6:34, 6:57, 7:14, 6:43), 1 downhill (5:51), all hard.  Even the 1 minute repeats were hard...the last 20 seconds or so of each felt like I was drowning and couldn't breathe while my legs just wanted to fall off.  I have the feeling I'll sleep like a baby tonight.

One of those brutally honest workouts where you wish you were in better shape but you're just not.  Hopped on the treadmill for the 2 mile warmup, then noticed the skies had cleared and it was no longer hailing, so jumped onto the roads for the remainder.  First interval has a small overall climb, but I was lagging even on the first downhill part.  Really felt like calling it quits then, but pressed on.  Second interval was almost all uphill and I just tried to survive it in as much discomfort as I could handle.  Next.  Third was better, probably because it had a net downhill after the initial 3/4 mile uphill section, but legs were pretty shot towards the end.  Stumbled home during the cooldown.

Dealing with some persistent gastro issues the past few weeks and they seem to be getting worse.  I may need to go get my gut checked out.  Dunno if that's factoring into my on-off energy levels or my fitness levels which seem to bounce around from day to day.

Finally, a decent long run.  Felt more like taking a nap at the start, but was actually a bit better rested than the last couple of weeks.  Made it to the halfway mark without feeling too terrible, so I started having some thoughts of going 24 instead of the planned 22.  Even at the end, I was tired and hungry but could've kept going for another couple of miles.  None the worse for wear afterwards.  About the only issue was GI related and two pit stops took care of that problem.  Now to get a couple more good ones in....

Tired today.  Quantity of sleep was good but quality sucked and the time change and the mileage last week and......ok, so I'm whining but the body was tired.  Since this is a travel week, I figured this would be a cut-back week so I'd try to get at least 3 mile repeats in if 5 wasn't in the cards.  The warmup miles were around an 8:30 pace and the hr was low but the effort higher than it should've been.  An unscheduled pit stop, then into the mile repeats.  First in 6:08....plenty of turns and plenty hard.  Second in 6:07, still plenty of turns and was really feeling fried towards the end.  Third was in 6:19, barely hanging on, knowing this was going to be the last one.  Punted on 4 and 5 and dove into the 3 x 1 min on/off repeats, which went okay (5:17/mi, 4:59/mi, 4:52/mi paces), then onto the cooldown which was slow and I was done.

Feeling the mild nausea that's been plaguing me lately again today.  Decided to push thru to get a shorter but decent workout in.  First 2 MP/effort miles tough and just wasn't clicking.  Then the pace dropped at the same effort level into the low 40s....nice.  Then, unexpectedly, the pace dropped for the last 2+ miles into the high 20s.  Very nice.  Finished up and the nausea returned and settled in for the evening.  after having put up with it for this long, I think maybe it's time to go see the doc.

Hi neighbor! I've been searching the blog for people in my local area, didn't realize there were this many! Nice long run. I see "LM warmup" in your workout, something that is in mine a lot, too. Do you also do LLs and Myrtles and Cannonballs?

I guess you weren't at the Resolution series race yesteday.

No, but I know what the Myrtles and Cannonballs are. Don't really remember what the LLs are though.....I may lump those in with what I'm calling the LM. Obviously I took some bits and pieces of that warmup/cooldown regime and integrated it into my own.

I was planning on running the complete Resolution series, but we adopted 2 dogs over christmas and the obedience classes are Saturday mornings, so....

Not my day.  My doctor told me he suspects Celiac Sprue is causing my GI distress, so while I wait on blood test results, I get to start a no-gluten diet.  No way to know if all this GI distress I'm dealing with right now will even subside by Boston.  Then, I made it 6.21 miles on my treadmill when it started making awful noises and the belt started bunching up.  Okay, so I shouldn't have expected this ~ $150 treadmill that I bought at Kmart over 10 years ago to have lasted as long or as well as it did, but now?  Really?

Just wasn't feeling it today.  Body felt wornout, legs beat, and my right knee had a niggle that I didn't like, so it was really easy to push back today's long run to tomorrow.  Plus, Boston's on a Monday, so shifting everything a day to the right this close to the event is probably a good thing anyway.  Finally, tomorrow is a 20 miler with 18 miles at 10% off MP....in other words, a long hard run (to quote the Brad Hudson book).  Need to get my game face on.

Sounds like a good job, and a fun run. Isn't it interesting how a little harder effort will often feel better than an easy effort. I think our bodies were designed to work, and when things are too easy they get confused.

How not to sound disappointed?  Of course I would've loved to keep my one PR streak alive....always running a PR at each marathon I race, but it was not to be, despite the fantastic weather and a great support team.  Not the race I wanted but definitely the race I had in me that day.  As I expected, the GI problems I've been dealing with prevented me from arriving at the starting line as well trained as I've been for my last couple of marathons and forced me to make some adjustments during the race.  Having said all of that, this was one of the most enjoyable races I've ever run and I'm already reconsidering my "run one and done" attitude towards running Boston.  What an event.

Okay, I could do without the expo (not a big crowd fan), the early wakeup for a mid-morning start, the long bus ride, the cold winds in athlete's village and the multi-hour wait to move to the start corral for another long wait.  But...knowing I was racing with the likes of Ryan Hall, Joan Benoit Samuelson.....later finding that the fastest marathon ever run by a human (two really) was run that day....hearing the cheers from the crowds all the way from Hopkinton to Boyleston....it was an indescribable experience.

My game plan was to run what I could....of course given the epic weather I was hoping for some race day magic and some 6:40s.  But after visiting multiple port-o-lets in athlete's village I knew my GI issues would be a factor.  At the start, I ran what felt comfortable.....and got passed left and right despite hitting 6:40s for 4 of the first 6 miles.  Unfortunately, that was pushing my HR up about 15 notches higher than it should've been at that speed.  Shortly after 8 miles, I made my first bathroom stop and lost a minute without much relief.  I continued from there knowing a PR wasn't in the cards and I tried to nail what I'll call GImax.....similar to the pace just before lactic acid accumulates but in this case GI distress.  A second longer pit-stop at 11+ miles wasted over 3 minutes but was the last I needed for the race, but by that time I was content just to enjoy the race and put in a good solid effort.

So from there I got to enjoy the crowds and the day.  My parents and Dianna were there to cheer me right around mile 17 and their presence was a boost.  The Newton hills actually weren't that terrible...certainly not when compared to some of the local hills in washington...and a 7:38 was my slowest mile at mile 21.  Coming into downtown Boston for the last 10k was really something......the thick crowds thickened and got louder.  I actually fed from their energy and picked up the pace a bit for the end, ticking off the last 5+ miles at a sub-7 pace and picking off several runner every quarter mile.  I was tired but almost didn't want it to be over at the finish.

Got to celebrate afterwards with my family and took the next several days completely off, touring coastal Maine and vacationing before returning home to WA a week later.  I plan to return to running at the pace my body accepts and focus on getting my GI house in order so I can get serious about racing again.  At least I have a few months to decide whether or not a return to Boston next year is in the cards...

Sorry that the race didn't go the way you wanted. I think it is normal to be disappointed when you have train so hard and things outside of your control keeps you from running the way you have trained. Good luck with the GI issues.

Cardio is feeling good.  Leg strength and endurance needs a bit of time to catch up.  The leap back into 70-80 mile week(s) is putting a load on that's slowing my easy run paces down a bit (and probably my hard workout days too for that matter), but despite a twinge here or there, everything feels good and tired and I know they'll come around stronger for it.  All I need to do is hang in there.

I know just how you feel. I've been going through the same thing the last couple weeks bumping back up to 60 mile weeks. I had to take a forced day off yesterday, just because of such bad muscle fatigue in my legs. Good to know the reason for the slower paces, eh? Sounds like you have enough experience to know what will happen after an easy week lets you recover and get caught back up!

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
29.001.250.000.0030.25

Decided a few days ago to jump into this trail 50K in Portland, OR.  Figured with Cascade Crest 100 a mere 13 weeks away, I really need to get my climbing and trail legs quickly.  Heck, I needed a race to give my training a swift kick in the pants.  I also wanted to try out some of the new gear and food I'd received the other day....the TPL-028 vest, some shot blocs and honey stinger gels....everything you're not supposed to do (i.e. try for the first time on race day).

So up at 4:45 so I could drive down to Portland for an 8:30 start.   Took a couple of "preventative" immodium on the drive down hoping to prevent one of "those" runs (and it worked).  Laced up my one and only pair of trail shoes (which are in dire need of replacement as the outsole nubs are nearly worn away, which I would pay for later) and was off with a large group.

The course was an out and back on mostly single-track trails, with a 10K loop at the far end.  What wasn't advertised was the level of mud on the trails.  The first/last 10K were okay, but the middle 30K were fields of mud in many places.  Glad I didn't decided to just wear some road shoes or I'd still be out there.

First 10K passed reasonably quickly......about 900' of climbing if the race materials were to be believed.  I settled into a decent gear and ran the whole stretch to the first aid station, passing a few folks but content not to exert too much effort.  I wasn't feeling great and was worried about the amount of yard-work I'd put in yesterday.  Downed some of the one handheld bottle I was carrying but not the entire thing, took a gel (mmmm, I like the honey gels!), and chewed on the shot bloc thingies.  The hardest part was getting the package open.

The second 10K was much nicer people-wise.....not nearly as crowded as many were running the 20K and made the turn.  More (mostly) gradual climbing but very muddy and slick in spots.  The trail was a bit more overgrown in areas and I've got the stinging nettles itches to prove it.  Put away the entire bottle, took an S cap, and more shot blocs.  Arrived at the 2nd aid station at the 20K mark, refueled and headed out on the "loop".

Up to now I'd been feeling pretty bleh.  Felt really crappy for the first few minutes out of the aid station due to over-salting a boiled potato.  After I got enough water in my stomach so it was happy again, my legs started feeling better.  This loop was pretty tough.  The downs were pretty steep and the ups likewise.  And they had a mud-slide for us to navigate.  Probably a 40-60 deg slope down that was all mud.  Needless to say I went down 3 times on the descent, and I wasn't alone.  Glenn Tachiyama was at the bottom taking pictures....I sure they were good ones while the mud was still fresh.  Fortunately for me, despite the difficulty of this leg, this is where I started really picking people off.  Leaving the 20K aid station, someone announced I was in 19th place.  I think by the time I made it back to that aid station (now the 30K aid station), I was in 14th or 15th, and I took down 3 more people in the next mile.

The last 20K was mostly downhill....hadn't realized how much climbing we'd done in the 10-20K section, but it was nice not to climb, because by this time my climbing gears were pretty well shot.  The mud wasn't so bad on the way down, aside from the steep stretches, but my hips were really tiring and my feet started really twisting in the mud.  Somewhere in here, my left knee started singing occasionally.....nothing too bad but it was letting he know I'd done something.  More blocs and stingers and water....I was really going thru the water now, as well as popping S-caps every hour.

At the last (40K aid station), I marked the next 2 runners to pick off.  One was pretty easy...he was close and I nabbed him just as we made the turn from the brief section of fire-road back onto the single-track, but the other had a sizable (4-5 minute) lead.  I spent the last 8.5K or so just keeping up the turnover and trying to hold a decent pace in hopes of catching him.  As I hit the mile-to-go mark, I was just about to concede that I wasn't going to catch him when I looked down a switchback below me and spotted him (finally).  So the last mile was a 6:47 mile on some really rocky downhill stretches where if I'd wiped out it would've done me in good.  I pass him with about 1/2 mile to go but didn't dare let off the accelerator since when I passed I could tell he tried to hang on.  I kept my foot on the floor thru the last 1/4 mile at the end too, and as it turns out wound up a minute or so ahead of him (but it felt like he was on my heels).  4:40:18, good enough for 6th place.

Automatic PR, since this was my first 50K.  Race info said the elevation gain was around 3100'.  Sure felt like more than that.  Garmin said 6438' (I know, unrealistic) but Garmin Connect said 5129', which sure felt more accurate.  In any event, I definitely got some climbing, descending, rollers, and single track running in.  Even got to bomb down about a mile of fire road.  I'm happy with the effort and the result.  A fun race, even if it was a bit muddy at times.  I'm sure I'll be feeling the effects for the next few days.  Since their computer went down sometime during the day, I didn't find out about age group placings before I left, so maybe I'll win or place in my age group.  In any event, a nice training run for my summer buildup.

More yardwork cross-training, this time cutting grass and planting 2 trees.  Tree #2 was a royal pain, since it was over what was originally gravel driveway.  Whoever laid the driveway base is to be commended....it took about 4 hours to break thru 8" of a 2' x 2' square with a breaker bar.  Yes, I was literally breaking rocks.

Sunny and warm (76F in the shade and the finish).  Ran up into Elbe hills, Memorial Trail East to Upper Elkspur, west to mysterious Diamond trail, turned around and back to Memorial Trail West back home.  Stopped to refill bottles twice at Little Mashell river headwaters....hope they're clean but no choice in the matter because of the heat.  The trails were pretty gnarly....older clearcuts and older forests were okay to rough, but newer clearcuts had logs and residue all over the place.  Trails are in desperate need of some TLC in many spots, so when I return I really need to contact the organization that maintains them to get my trail hours in on them.  Death march return, barely managing 8 minute miles downhill.  Overall about 9 paved miles, 8.5 trail miles, and 8 fire road miles.  I think this might be good prep for the "Trail for Hell" portion of the Cascade Crest 100.  Too bad I'm so beat up after only 25 miles.

25.01 trail miles in 3:42:06, 8:53/mi, HR 142 & stretching.

Mostly sunny, hot and humid.  Started run at ~87F and it was 95F at the finish.  Ran mostly on a mix of dirt bike path and single track trails, with a smidgen of pavement in Newport News park.  Fortunately, most of the run had some shade and there was an occasional breeze.  More fortunately, I ran 3 loops total and was able to stop by the car to refill water bottles and rehydrate.  After the first loop, I stopped in the camp store to buy some bug spray so I wouldn't be eaten alive again.....forgot how nasty the bugs and mosquitoes could be around water in VA.  Was feeling pretty tired for today's run and was really ready to pack it in by about the 10 mile mark so I'm very pleased that I persevered for 25 total, pushing my 2 day total to 40 and my weekly total over 90.  I did go down once, tripping on a root....a nice tuck and roll recovery.

I'm pretty certain this is the biggest standard mileage week ever, and while the elevation was negligible the heat and humidity was not.  Going to try to get some mid-range mileage tomorrow too, so I can go into the work week with some miles in the bank.

Sunny and blazing hot.  Started at 87F and crawled back inside at 93F (105F heat index), out of water and completely zapped.  Finished the last 4 miles on the treadmill in blissful 70F air conditioned comfort.  Much worse today as there was little shade and I was running on asphalt or concrete for most of the 12 outdoor miles.  That makes 57+ (slow) miles in 3 days.  I think tomorrow will be at easy day.  Fortunately, the weather is supposed to cool a bit and I only have to survive 4 more runs before I get back home.

65F.  A real butt kicker today.  Tackling my perceived neuromuscular deficiency and hip tightness with some additional stretching throughout the day and the reintroduction of drills, more strides, and shorter, faster speedwork that focuses on full strides instead of turnover (which I seem to have plenty of).  Legs were already tired after the warmup, the drills/strides helped loosen them up some, then the 1 min repeats really worked them hard.  Its been quite a while since I worked my legs this hard on a workout.  The 1 min repeats didn't really tax me cardiovascularly.....I was breathing hard but in control.....but my legs got tired and I didn't let them slack off any.  I'm sure I'll feel this one in the morning.

Sounds like your body is over trained to the point that it can't get caught back up with just a day off, or an easy run. Perhaps you're paying a toll for all those miles you logged when you were out east in the hot and humid.

Cooler  & cloudy (61F).  The rest day helped some but still 1/2 mile into the run the left leg/hip uncoordination returned.  The hip flex muscles felt weak and seemed to be straining at a 8:45/mi pace.  The adductor muscle was tight....feet kept hitting the opposite (planted) leg on its way back to take a stride.  And my left leg strides didn't seem to have any power.  Muddled through that for a couple of miles, stopping to stretch a couple of times.  It got a bit better around the 4 mile mark and by about 5 miles felt pretty good, so I started pushing a bit.  Last 2 miles downhill were in the mid-upper six minute range so I have some good turnover and strides going.  Seems like once I finally warmed up and shook everything loose, things were decent.

So, focus on stretching, hip and core work, especially the left, and see what happens.

Sunny and warm (68F).  Late day run today after spending the morning cleaning carpets.  First 3 miles was out and back to the bathroom, then up Scott Turner into the Elbe Hills for some trails.  The forest road got regraded and some quarry spalls spread......so instead of fairly compact roadway, I was dealing with large loose rocks.  Not so much fun.  Discovered a new trail today....Looking to intersect Memorial East instead I found Snoey.  Snoey to John R. (?) to Anvil Loop to Upper Elkspur to Memorial East and back home.  Ran into the guy who spends all his weekends maintaining the trails, so I stopped and chatted with him for quite a while getting the scoop on the trails, got a map, and got a phone number so I can report trees blocking the trails.  He likes maintaining them, but often has difficulty finding the blowdowns......sounds like the perfect job is for me to report the ones I find while out running.  Almost like its not work at all....

Cool (68F) and humid.  Stretching and rolling helped last night.....still got tight around the 1/2 mile mark but managed to keep the warmup (uphill) miles under a 9 min/mi pace.  Stopped to stretch a few times and things were definitely better but also definitely not fixed.  Actually, it seemed like my hip flexors and adductors were quickly tired, which seemed to cause the other muscles to start contracting when they shouldn't normally, so maybe this is also muscle weakness and others are compensating.  Likely a mix of both.

Hill sprints went pretty well.  The first 3 were slower....1:38-1:40.  Next was 1:33, but the last 6 were all 1:29-1:31, so I managed to knock some rust off and get some good work in.  The wheels really felt like they came off for the last 2, but the numbers showed consistent times.  The cooldown was a bit of a death march.  On one hand, my legs were shot.  On the other hand, I wanted to get my overall pace beneath the 8 min/mi mark, so the closing miles were all in the low 7s, which was really tough.  No left hip/leg tightness during that stretch, so evidently its just a warmup thing.

Rainy (61F).  Left leg/hip got tight and tired again at 1/2 mile mark, more tired than tight.  Labored through that for the next few miles and it got marginally better, but the tired hip flexor/adductor persisted and the pace showed.

Time to add hill sprints back into the mix.  Boy, were they miserably slow.  Okay, I definitely have a muscular fitness issue I need to fix.

Sunny and hot (78F).  Left hip/leg still tight and weak.  Combined with a 3 day no-running break and the sun, today was a run-walk day. Ran a few shorter fartleks during the warmup to try to get the hip loosened up, which worked a tiny bit.  Punted after 3 hill repeats when the left hip really started getting tired and my left hammy started whining.  Threw in a few more 1-1.5 min fartleks on the cooldown headed home just to compensate for the walking/stretching periods and to get it over with faster.

The 3 day break was a check to make sure I wasn't overtraining, causing the hip issues.  Nope.  Actually, not much actual rest, as we spent the 3 day holiday weekend working out butts off spreading about 35 tons of gravel, stretching no-climb wire for fencing, excavating some areas, and all kinds of other work around the house.  Exhausting.

Rest never works for me, either, to get over injuries.

Are you familiar with Jay Johnson's Myrtl routine, designed to increase strength and flexibility in the hip girdle?

LM warmup, 14.13 miles in 1:57:15, 8:18/mi, HR 163 & stretching.

Sunny and hot (78F).  Felt much warmer than 78.  Did some extra hip strengthening and stretching this morning, then took some extra time to do a longer warmup with some more hip work before the run.  Marginally better, meaning still tight but mostly just weak, so I spent the early miles concentrating on running relaxed and steadily without stopping to walk/stretch as I've been doing lately.  By the 3.5 mile mark, the legs started gradually loosening up, and while the speed didn't increase much, I did manage the entire 7 mile climb and return without a walk break (aside from a quick 2-step to down some water without choking).  Legs eventually got tired all around and the body followed (especially the shoulders).  Tried to speed up to something resembling a sprint for the final .13.  More stretching and strengthening afterwards.

LM warmup, 8.08 miles in 1:04:06, 7:56/mi, HR 153, 10 x 12 sec Hill Sprints & stretching.

Mostly cloudy (62F).  Substantial improvement over yesterday.  The left hip tightness was significantly reduced, as was the muscular fatigue and improper muscular contractions.  By about 3 miles, the residual was nearly gone completely.  Even managed to keep the pace under 9 minute miles.  My turnover is still high (188 steps/min) so I focused on reducing that a tad and taking longer strides.  I even managed to get back to a semi-normal pace on the return and snuck below an 8 min/mi average.

Gotta give DLTheo a shout out.  Dunno if it was his suggestion of incorporating the Myrtl routine, or the addition of Hill Sprints, or the increased stretching, or the hip exercises with weights I've added, but whatever it is seems to have me on the path to recovery.  Finally.

Myrtl/LM warmup, 6.21 miles in 52:39, 8:29/mi, HR 148 & stretching.

Sunny and warm (64F).  Well, 64 felt warm in the sun.

Two steps forward, one step back.  Left hip was tight again and the gluteus medius muscle was almost immediately fatigued.  Not too worried.....instead of doing the Myrtl routine earlier in the day, I did it right before running and may have over-worked that muscle.  Or perhaps it was moving more gravel early this morning to get the barn stall leveled.  Whatever the case, not too worried about one day.  I did look back through my logs and found references to this tightness as far back as May, and recall my heels knocking the back of the opposite leg as far back as March, so this has obviously been going on for a while and won't get fixed overnight.

Call me crazy, but I'm going to get up at ~ 2am tomorrow and drive 4 hours to go run a 50K, billed as the toughest in WA state.  At worse, it'll be a good, supported training run on nice single-track with plenty of climbing and descending.  At best, I'll have a good race and it'll jump my fitness up a notch or two.  We shall see....

Decided a couple of days ago to run this race as prep for White River 50 and Cascade Crest 100, since it has a ton of climbing and descending (6800'), is mostly technical single track, and my legs needed to get beat up a bit.  It definitely lived up to its billing as the toughest 50K in the state.

Up at 2am, out the door by 2:30 to drive across the mountains to the Ahtanum State Forest near Tampico, WA.  Made good time (very little traffic, imagine that).  A bit tired since I didn't really taper much, wound up moving gravel yesterday, and only got about 4.5 hours of sleep.  Oh well.

The course follows the Grey Rock trail up and over 2 ridges.  It starts off at about 4600', climbs to 6200' then descends down to 4200' to hit the first aid station at mile 8.  Then it climbs to about 6400', rolls up and down for a bit to the turnaround aid station, then the climbs/descends occur in reverse as we retrace our steps.

Race started a few minutes late as the briefing ran a tad over and some people showed up late.  New race director this year and evidently one call he made was to move the start line a few hundred meters from the trailhead to give the pack a chance to thin a bit.  He also split the 50K, 25K, and 12K starts.  I whole-heartedly applaud both moves as it made the start fairly reasonable.

First climb was pretty brutal.  Calves were screaming pretty quickly and I don't think my heels touched the ground much.   I was pushing a bit early, pretty much like everyone else, but I actually had a purpose.  My time in this race wasn't so important, but I wanted to push things early a bit to get the legs beat up a bit and to suffer.  I know, sounds crazy, but with a difficult 50 miler and then a still unfathomable difficult 100 milers on the schedule, I really need to get used to suffering.  And if my legs bounce back stronger, it'll all be worth it.  After cresting the first ridge, I let loose a bit on the descent and managed to pass some folks and was doing well until the GI issues hit and I had to make a pit stop.  Discovered later I lost about 4 places there.  Hit aid station #1 at the bottom of the next valley over in 1:22.

The second climb was seriously brutal.  First, it was longer, since the initial descent was longer than the climb.  Second, the rocks were everywhere.  They really should've named this grey rocks 50k because rocks were everywhere.  At times, it was difficult if not impossible to run.  My legs were already feeling pretty beat-up and I was tiring quickly.  I wasn't thinking this at the time, but really, that's what I was aiming for.  Dropped into the run all flats and downhills and reasonable uphills and power-hike the rest mode pretty quickly.  Hit some mud and then snow towards the top, but got rewarded with some nice views.  Finally broke out and hit the short dirt-road section out-and-back to the aid station and here's where I got a chance to size up the competition.  I was 7th when I hit the aid station and 6th when I left at 2:54.

The descent was definitely easier than the climb but the rocks really made things treacherous.  Took a couple of stumbles which made me really cautious since I didn't want to get seriously hurt.  Unfortunately, I had #7 & 8 hot on my heels and I really didn't want to give up a placing, so I pushed pretty hard.  It was warming up and I was putting away the water, but the stinger gels were starting to give me a nauseous feeling.  The boiled potatoes at aid #2 helped, but the feeling really returned on this stretch.  Very glad to hit aid 1/3 again so I could tackle the last climb and descent, but I was surprised (and skeptical) to hear that I was in 5th.  4:06.

As I left aid 1/3, #7 (now #6) came in so I knew lollygagging wasn't an option, but my climbing gear was shot.  I was basically running the rare flats and then running short stretches...a dozen paces here, 1/10th mile there, any time my HR dropped to about 145, even though I was really sucking down the O2.  This climb really hurt, but at least the really bad rocks were gone.  I caught and passed another runner and moved into 4th towards the top, then spotted and nearly caught #3 as we crested the hill.  Unfortunately, he still had a descending gear and mine was slipping badly.  I managed 8 minute miles on the last 2 miles down but I was really risking a wreck as my legs were just shot.  Fortunately, it was enough to hold off the pursuit, so I crossed in 4th place (3rd had me by at least a few minutes....said when he heard me come up from behind at the top of the ridge, he woke up and got busy holding me off, so at least I'm good for something).

So a successful (and pretty painful day).  My feet really got beat up by the rocks, and I was wishing I had a pair of those Hoka One One Bondi B shoes one of the guys was wearing for about 25 miles of the race.  A 10 minute stint in the 40F stream nearby helped, but the 3+ hour drive back home did not.  Time to rest up, heal, and get ready for WR50.

Legs uncoordinated again today.  Stopped every mile for the first 3 to stretch.  Stopping allows the legs to recover the "normal" feeling briefly but the uncoordination returns quickly.  Ran strides/drills at the 3 mile mark, which went well.  Jogged another 1/2 mile to begin hill repeats, but the first one was a clear indicator that my legs probably aren't recovered from Saturday's race and the strides took what was available out of them.  Halfway thru repeat 2 I stopped and jogged to get 8 total miles in.  The return miles were slow and sprinkled with walk breaks.  The legs just didn't have it in them...

Tightness came on again at about 1/2 mile.  Left leg felt like it had no power, couldn't stride out, body tried pulling to the left.  Tried to do some repeats and they went okay, but form still didn't feel right, and about 1.5 miles in, I decided to hurry back home and see if I couldn't get down to see the chiro.  Short version is that my left hip was rotated forward pretty significantly, so I couldn't really stride correctly, tensing muscles that should've been relaxing, etc, etc.  Back home and attempted to finish the workout.  Much, much better, stride was back, virtually no muscle tension issues, and my left leg had power again.  The left hip felt a bit more tired as the workout progressed, but since I've been suffering with this for a while now, I'd suspect the muscles need time to readjust and strengthen, and another trip or two to the chiro will be needed.  But the good news is that I believe I found the problem and can now fix it.  Thank heavens for chiropractors that know what they're doing!

Humid.  Left hip wasn't quite as good as the post-chiro visit yesterday but still much improved.  Felt like the hip got a bit tight for about a mile or so and the uphill got a bit tougher after the first mile.  Occasionally the adductor would tense at the wrong time in a stride.  All things considered, still much better, but I need to hit the chiro again a couple of times next week to make sure the hip stays in the right place.  The hill sprints weren't too bad and its evident that the last couple of sets that I've got were really impacted by the hip.

37.01 miles in 6:38:12, 10:46/mi, HR 141.

Today's run got away from me a bit.  Was thinking this run would be in the 25-30 mile range.  I decided to run a loop to hit some sections of trail I hadn't before.  The plan was to start with the Anvil connector to Memorial East, Upper Elkspur, Buck's Crossing, Lower Elkspur, Upper Elkspur, Memorial East, Anvil connector and back home.

Everything went according to plan for the first few hours.  The last section of Upper Elkspur before Buck's Crossing was pretty overgrown, but the section wasn't more than 1.5 miles so not too bad.  The trail crew had been out weed-eating Buck's Crossing recently, so it was nice and wide, although that trail is actually a fairly narrow gully so footing can be tricky.  Passed a couple of horsewomen, exchanged some trail condition info, and jumped onto the Lower Elkspur, headed onto a section I hadn't run before.  Conditions were pretty rough....muddy, some sections overgrown, and not the best trail.  The farther I went, the more conditions deteriorated overall.  Some sections weren't bad, others I couldn't see the trail, and still others took me through 6' seedlings that completely obscured the trail.  Then there was the fun stinging nettles and pricker weeds, so my legs felt like they were getting pretty torn up.  I passed the Diamond Trail intersection, which I had run most of a few weeks back, and was truly in uncharted territory.  The map I had wasn't to scale and I spent the next few hours running on trails that were barely marked and completely overgrown.  I wound up getting lost on a few occasions, came upon unmarked trail intersections, and eventually got to the western trailhead and couldn't find the link between the two Elkspur trails.  It was late and I knew I was going to be back after I'd told my wife, so I jumped onto what I guessed was the 5 road and headed back up the hill.  Something didn't seem right, so I turned around, re-ran some trail only to have it disappear, encountered some closed gates with fresh warnings about spraying some chemical, and had all kinds of other fun before finally committing to the road.  Fortunately, it was the 5 road.  Unfortunately, I was out of water and out of legs, so the remaining 13 miles or so was a real slog.  I eventually found another stream, jumped onto the 6 road, found the Memorial East trail, which was also now terribly overgrown, fought my way back to the Anvil connector, and headed down the hill for home.  Instead of a 5-6pm arrival I got back at 8pm.  My wife was not pleased.  I seriously didn't intend to run this many miles today, so this is definitely the last long run before White River, but the ups and downs of this run was good training for the 100 miler.  I still can't quite figure out how I'm going to survive that since these measley 37 miles kicked my tail.  At least my water purifier seemed to function properly.

LM warmup, 14.04 miles in 1:43:08, 7:21/mi , HR 159, w/ last 10 miles Moderate effort (3 uphill, 7 downhill) & stretching.

Today I discovered that when I stand and raise one knee up as high as possible while keeping my body straight, my right knee goes about 3 inches higher than my left.  Makes sense that the range of motion in my left hip isn't anywhere near my right.  So I went to my chiro and demonstrated.  He did some tests and remarked that even though I display fine mobility in both hips, its obvious from my test that something isn't right, so he made some adjustments and got my knees to the same height, told me to go for my run and if it reverted, to come back today.

So the run started out with the same hip tightness problems in the hamstring and adductor, so I wound up stopping to stretch periodically (1/4 mile increments to start, 1 mile increment at the 4 mi mark).  It did feel different, more like it was just muscles contracting when they shouldn't instead of a range of motion issue.  Finally, I did some lateral dynamic hip stretching at mile 4, something in my back went pop, and off I went without any issues for the rest of the run.  From that point on, I pushed the pace.  By the end, I was worn out but happy.  After stretching out, I retested the knee height and the discrepancy is back.  So back to the chiro.

Hip tightened after about 3/4 mile at a very easy pace.  Stopped periodically to stretch.  Began some bounding strides which were fine, but as soon as I dropped back down to a normal easy pace, the tightness returned.  Did some strides to try to loosen things up and that made things somewhat better, but it wasn't until mile 6 on the return that the hip really loosened up, and never fully. The trigger point today seemed to be at the top of the hamstring where it attaches to the pelvis.....sciatic nerve territory.  Makes some sense, since it's extra muscle activations I'm dealing with.  Probably doesn't help that I sit for work most of the day.

LM warmup, 8 treadmill miles in 1:27:51, 10:59/mi, w/ 2 mile warmup (1% incline), 4 miles hill climber (15% incline) w/ 2 x 0.1 run, 6 x 0.15 run, remainder hiking, & 2 mile cooldown (1% incline), 3150+' ascent equivalent.

To give the hip a different stimulus, cranked the incline today and did some "power hiking" with some brief run intervals.  15% incline kicked my butt.  I think I sweated several gallons and my legs were jello by the time the cooldown arrived.  Good workout.

My very first DNF.  Oh boy.  Despite the travel and sleep deficit, plus the left hip issues lately and feeling crappy at the start, it was really shaping up to be a good race.  Hit the first aid station in 33:32, over a 2 minute improvement from last year, and feeling at least as good.  Unfortunately, about 1/2 mile out of that aid station, I rolled my left ankle pretty severely.  Of course, I didn't quit there.  Oh no, I proceeded to shake it off and ran another 5 or 6 miles at a good clip on a stretch where there's quite a bit of climbing (2900' total) and was keeping a pretty good pace.  Unfortunately, on cresting the climbs, the flats made my ankle pain spike from not great to bad and short decents were even worse.  Backing off the pace didn't help much and before too long I knew I was DNF'ing at Ranger Creek.  Unfortunately, that was 2 more miles, which were slow.  I finished that section in 1:39 versus 1:31 from last year, but that was with a couple of miles of run/walk, so I was definitely on a good pace before the drop.

At Ranger Creek, the only options were to hike back the way I'd come (7.8 miles) or hike down another trail hit later in the race (5.1 miles).  I took option 2 and made my way down the mountain one painful step at a time.  Uli Steidl passed me about a mile from the road, 26 miles into his race.

Medics put some ice on it until it started turning an ugly red, at which point they said go to the ER.  I did, and some Xray's later, diagnosed as a bad sprain.  Which probably nukes my plans to run Cascade Crest 100 in 4 weeks.  Yeah, a pretty crappy day.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to get past the "feeling sorry for myself" phase and into the "recovery as quickly as possible and come back stronger" phase. I just hope I really don't have to enter the "cannot run the 100 miler" phase...

Although the swelling and discoloration is still pretty bad, I'm actually pretty encouraged.  Pain is minimal and I'm walking pretty normally.  I'm also doing some aggressive rehab and maintaining most of the strength in my ankle and am working to loosen it up to restore range of motion.  Hope to be running on level ground soon (wish I hadn't broken my treadmill a couple of months ago).  I may just be able to run Cascade Crest after all...

LM warmup, 6.08 miles in 58:47, 9:40/mi, HR 148, foam roller, stretching.

Foot still swollen but regained a bunch of range of motion, especially laterally (inversion/eversion) today after getting it adjusted by the chiro yesterday.  That was quite the experience....he was tugging and pushing on my clown foot and I kept holding on waiting for the excruciating pain, but it was all good.  Evidently its a good idea to visit a chiro after a sprain, because when you roll your ankle, your calcaneous (heel) stays in place while the rest of the bones roll.  In any event, after the adjustment yesterday, the foot was definitely stiff and a bit on the sore side, but after getting it warmed up this am with the alternating hot/cold treatment and some massage, the range of motion was much improved.

Which led me to try a slow run today.  Since it was upper 70s and sunny, the slow part wasn't a problem.  The 3 day layoff helped keep things slow too.  Some pain, probably better classified as discomfort.  Back to the hot/cold treatment after the rolling and stretching.  Good thing I like shoes on the big side, otherwise my swollen foot wouldn't have fit.

60 minutes on the recumbent exercise bike, level 3, interval program, 19.6 miles.  The bike is really working the glutes and quads, but not so much the hamstrings and especially not the calves.

Foot swelling has subsided from balloon level but is still substantial.  Good planarflexion, dorsiflexion merely okay, and inversion/eversion poor.  Pain in the perioneal tendons along the leg, around the ankle and into the foot.  No looseness in the ankle ligaments but the ankle overall is tight.  Went to the doctor today and despite my aversion to pain meds, he convinced me to try 10 days ibuprofin regime to knock down the inflammation and to help "speed healing".  Activities to pain tolerance, which becomes problematic once the ibuprofin kicks in and the foot feels "better".  One day at a time....

Foot ached something fierce last night when I laid down to try to sleep.....took some time to ignore it enough to fall asleep.  Felt fine this morning and decent enough on the run.  The ache is mostly the achilles attachment point on the heel, but I figure its weakness leaving the body, right?  Stride is still not quite right, but today's issue was more from tired (out-of-shape) legs.  I hope a few sessions will wake them up to the fact that they couldn't possibly have lost as much fitness as they're claiming right now.  The strides were okay but tiring.  Overall, about as happy as I have any right to be.

1/4 mile into the run the left hip issues began again (loss of coordination, leg 'seizing').  Made it 1/2 mile then turned around, jumped in the car, and headed for the chiro.  Adjusted neck, jog (worse, hamstring & adductor kept tensing at the wrong time), adjusted sacrum (better, but now the quad felt a bit weak), then adjusted hip.  He theorized that I might have a deep groin pull and recommended some isometric exercises and waiting to run until tomorrow.  Still very frustrating.

Discovered a thread on letsrun.com "Loss of coordination in leg" that actually (finally) describes my symptoms.  There's a bunch of different stories there and I haven't read thru all of them (40+ pages) but at least I'm not completely alone.  I also see I'm not the only one who experiences symptom differences on different surfaces (asphalt/concrete bad, trails good).  I'm still holding out hope I can get to a runnable state for Saturday.

Left hip locking up again.  This time the left hamstring and adductor were contracting during swing phase, shortening stride until it was really wreaking havoc on my stride.  Reverted to run/walk to get thru 4 miles.  Ran a few short fast strides afterwards, which were fine.  Also did some high knee and heel-to-butt drills without any issues.  Ankle flexibility is still lacking somewhat but improving.  Pain was tolerable.  Still holding out hope for Saturday.

One last quick shakeout jog in the morning.  Actually not too bad.  Yes, the left hip tightness and uncoordination came during the run BUT I managed to muddle through without walking and it seemed to be starting to work itself out and loosen up.  At its worst, I noticed my left hip muscles "tensing" for impact.  I think part of the problem might be the anticipatory pain that remains in the ankle, exacerbated by the pavement.  Maybe its anticipatory jarring of pavement alone.....looking back on the bouts, things are definitely better when I'm off-road.  I can only hope that is the case tomorrow, as I take comfort in being in the company of guys like Jeff Browning, who won last year in course record time despite banging his shin the day prior and being in pain the entire way; Scott Jurek, who won the Hardrock 100 in 2007 4 days after spraining his ankle, and our own Jon Allen, who overcame hip problem that largely sidelined him for 6 weeks prior to his first 100 miler and went on to go under 20 hours on his first try.  Thanks guys.

Now, onto the story.....LONG READ WARNING!!!!!

First, this is now officially the hardest thing I've ever done.  For about 70 miles I was swearing I'd never do anything like this ever again.  As a matter of fact, I spent much of the race willing myself to not drop only so that I wouldn't feel like I had unfinished business and kept going merely to get the belt buckle so I'd never have to come back.  Pretty sad, huh?  But I know some perspective will dull the bad and sharpen the good memories, so we'll see how I feel in a week.

The day started well enough.  Got up at 5am, Dianna and I drove to drop the two puppies off at the kennel, then proceeded over the pass to Easton to arrive shortly after 8am.  Nerves were really an issue....I was a mess and tried to used the drive to distract me from the looming effort.  I'd been having trouble wrapping my brain around propelling myself for 100 miles.  My injuries of late haven't helped my confidence, and neither has my mileage.  But there we were, so I dropped my drop bags and started prepping.  Problem #1....left my body glide at home, sitting on the edge of the bathtub where I'd been applying it to critical areas while getting dressed that morning.  Problem #2, putting on my compression socks, the right one ripped at the ankle, a big hole, and I'd left my other pair at home.  This was a bigger problem, since I was really counting on them to support my left ankle during the race, so I decided to apply some duct tape over the hole to attempt to keep the dirt out.  Lessons learned?  Bring extra stuff.

Got some breakfast, race brief @ 9am, US & Canadian national anthems at 9:55, and we were (finally) off at 10.  The morning was already warm and the sun was unobstructed overhead, so it would warm quickly.  The left hip started affecting my stride early, but fortunately the start was on softer gravel/dirt and relative flat roads so I just held the pace I could and hoped that it'd loosen up when the climbing started and I downshifted.  It did and those first couple of miles were the only time it bothered me at all.

I'd written up splits based on 24 hour finish.  Basically, I was just hoping for some race day magic.  The initial climb to the Goat Peak trailhead was fairly benign and I hit the first aid-station ahead of schedule.  The next climb to Goat Peak and beyond was much tougher and by the time I hit the Cole Butte aid station I was 16 minutes behind schedule.  Fortunately, I quickly recognized that a sub-24 finish was a clearly overambitious goal, so I just kept plugging along at a pace that seemed to straddle the border between reasonable and crazy.

Hydration was already difficult.  The heat really takes it out of me and while mid 80s might not seem hot to some, I was boiling over.  The weeks before the race here in WA had not climbed into the 80s.  The week *of* the race had been in the 80s all week.  As I write this a couple of days later, we're back in clouds and the 60-70s.  Needless to say, the heat would be an issue for me.  I was running with 2 handhelds and was regularly emptying them between aid stations.  I was also pushing S! Caps every hour, which seemed to help keep my stomach on an even keel.

Anyway, Cole Butte to Blowout Mt moved from single track to dirt roads, a long 1500' descent followed by a long 1500' climb.  I ran with another runner here for a while, Gavin, who was also a former Army officer and who had last year biked from Seattle to Mount Rainier, climbed Mount Rainier, then ran unsupported on the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier, in sequence.  Wow.  Made me feel a little less crazy but a whole lot impressed.  Gavin left me behind on the climb as I downshifted once again to a power hike.  Rolled into Blowout Mountain aid station at 3:17, now over 20 minutes behind my original schedule.

Don't really remember much about the stretch to Tacoma Pass, but I think this was the section where I ran across Davy Crockett.  Had a chance to introduce myself briefly and make some likely inane passing comments, but I was anxious to make progress and to cover as much distance in the daylight as possible.  I think this was the section where I had to make a fairly quick potty stop, but it was brief.  Tacoma Pass arrived at the 4:57 mark, now 31 minutes behind.

Instead of spending some time there to rehydrate and refuel better, I left fairly quickly, anxious to cover the mile or so remaining before hopping onto the Pacific Coast Trail for 30+ miles.  The trails and roads so far were nice, but I'd really been looking forward to the PCT section since signing up for the race.  It didn't disappoint.  The trails provided some nice shade, scenery, and diversity, covering exposed hillsides with views, cool shady forests, and much in-between.  If my back hadn't really started acting up at this point, I'd probably really have enjoyed it more, but it did.  Friday I'd made a last visit to the chiro for an adjustment and I think he went a bit overboard...by late friday afternoon my back was stiffening up.  Foam roller treatment worked those kinks out, but it was tightening again and no foam rollers were in sight for at least another 75 miles.  An aching back would follow me for the rest of the race.

Got a brief pickup from the cross-country team manning the Snowshoe Butte aid station (6:53, 55 minutes back), considered stopping to address a blister on my right foot that I'd been feeling for several miles but decided to wait until the first set of drop bags at Stampede Pass and pushed on.  Coming thru the aid stations was a real highlight, as mentally I was struggling trying to deal with the distance, both behind and ahead of me.  In fact, I probably spent miles 15 to about 70 or so with serious thoughts of quitting, which I managed to stave off by convincing myself that I'd regret it later, wind up signing up for another 100 again, and then would have to cover the entire distance, whereas if I just kept on going, there was only X miles left.  Makes sense, right?  It did at the time.

Stampede Pass came at the 7:42 mark, 59 minutes behind schedule.  Here I did take some extra time to get my lights, pack my arm sleeves and gloves, and grab some additional honey stingers, as well as to grab some additional liquids and food.  I definitely got behind on liquids during the day, but foods I was still doing okay and was managing to keep at least one GU down per segment in addition to grazing at the aid stations.

The trip to Meadow Mountain (9:30, 1:15 behind) and on to Olallie Meadows (11:18, 1:28 behind) was long.  Darkness started descending after Meadow Mountain and I got passed by several runners in this section.  The nice thing was that the heat of the day was passing but I was feeling pretty wiped, hurt pretty badly, had little energy, and still had well over 50 miles to go.  The pierogi's at Olallie Meadows were a good pickup....actually, the food at each aid station was a real boost each time I got there.....watermelon, pierogi, ravoli, potato and chicken noodle soup, and quesedillas all took their turns during the race giving me a boost.  Olallie Meadows was the first aid station where I allowed myself to sit down for a couple of minutes and it was heavenly, but I made myself get going quickly lest I never want to depart.  After Olallie meadows, it was off the PCT, down a steep aggregate gravel road to the ropes and then the tunnel.

The ropes were absolutely required.  If I'd had a harness and carabiner I could've just repelled straight down, but instead it was a combination walk/slide/dangle event until I finally lowered myself onto the John Wayne trail, a blessedly smooth gravel (former rail) trail with a slight uphill climb thru a 2+ mile tunnel.  I seemed to catch a bit of a second wind here and made some good time in this section, passed a couple of runners, and emerged from the other side looking for all the turns to the Hyak aid station.  Got a bit disoriented twice trying to find the arrows and markings but didn't get far off course and stumbled into Hyak, the notional half-way mark, at 12:44 (1:16 behind).  A good section where I even managed to make up some time.

Dianna and Blue were waiting for me at Hyak, big boost #1.  Half-way, big boost #2.  Easy place to drop, big minus #1.  2-1 for continuing but a surprise bonus pushed me onwards.....a runner named Nick came up and asked if I'd like a pacer to Lake Kachess.  That was like asking me if I'd like to win the lottery.  So after some soup, another dip into the drop bag to grab my cobbled together garmin recharge device (USB charger and the charging cable), change my shirt and some more stinger gels, we were off.

Nick was a godsend.  He got me chatting and took my mind off the fact that I'd been at this over 12 hours now and face yet another climb, although this one was on gravel roads.  Nick's uncle is running the Ultrarunning Grand Slam this year (uh, wow) and thought it'd be a good idea for Nick to experience an 100 mile ultra, so he and his buddy should offer to pace runners from Hyak to Lake Kachess, where his uncle was volunteering at the aid station.  During our time together, I discovered that while Nick was a outdoors kind of guy, he was really just getting into endurance running and this would officially be the longest run he'd done.  I might've been more concerned had I been more conscious, but I was glad for the company.  When I planned to run this, I figured I'm used to running alone and could handle no pacer easily.  Well, I might've made it, but having Nick along really helped.  The long climb to Keechelus Ridge (15:05, 1:40 behind) went faster than it would've otherwise, especially since the climbing gear in my transmission was gone.  The descent to Lake Kachess (16:21, 1:55 behind) was a bit brutal as by this time my quads were shot and every downhill step hurt.  We passed some people and got passed by others, but Nick got me there and gave me a mental break that I really needed before the last section of the race.  Sorry about all the whining and talk about quitting, Nick!

Lake Kachess was a great aid station.  I spent some time in a chair there getting tended to by the Grey Rock 50K race director, putting back some soup, and steeling myself for what came next.  This aid station is listed as the place to quit if you're not up for the remaining 30+ miles.....the next section, the Trail From Hell, is described as nothing less than brutal and leads further into the backcountry where places to catch a ride back are extremely limited.  But, after 5 minutes, Nick chased me out of the chair, helped me stash my watch recharger (worked great, got the whole 26+ hours course recorded on my garmin) and raid my last drop bag and got me to the TFH trailhead, where I bid him farewell.

The race manual says not to worry about pace in this section.  I might've taken that a bit too literally, but the initial bush-whack just to *get* to the TFH was....hellish.  Climbing over, under, and around blowdowns was really tough, especially this late in the race where just bending and moving select joints was not easy.  Then I got to a section where I almost made a big mistake....I lost the trail, couldn't see the next trail markers, and was trying to decide between 2 fairly well established and wide trails.  It just didn't seem right.....and after wandering between them for a few minutes, I finally decided to go back to the last marker and slowly turn 360 degrees.  Then I spied the distant marker in the other direction away from the nice trails and straight down towards the creek/river.  Oh boy, a couple of logs across a pretty wide stream/river crossing where balance would be an issue.  I gave myself a 50/50 chance....and actually made it.

So now I'm on the TFH and it doesn't initially seem as bad as advertised, but it really was.  Plenty of steep rollers, unkempt trails, washouts, blowdowns, and just generally slow going.  I had my handheld light out since it was brighter, but carrying it with 2 bottles really made for slow going.  About the only thing that pushed me periodically was the sound of others behind me....I was sick and tired of getting passed.  I was maintaining a *blistering* 26:xx/mi pace thorough this section.  A few small stream crossing throughout and another wider and deeper one at the end where I felt sure I was going in since the crossing log was tiny.  Threw my handhelds across, managed to dive to a stump that was 1/3 across to resteady myself and somehow managed to take the 3 or 4 steps to arrive mostly safe and dry at the other side.  By the time I hit the Mineral Creek aid station at 19:00 (1:59 behind) I was *so* ready for some nice gravel roads.  I lingered a bit long here until another runner who'd been lingering even longer than I finally departed, so I left shortly thereafter to give chase.

The 3000' 7 mile climb up to No Name Ridge was a long slow grind, but the sun was coming up and I was starting to feel a bit better (or less worse).  I caught and put some distance between myself and the runner ahead and caught and passed another later.  During the climb, I saw some behind me that were maintaining a decent hike pace so I kept pushing as much as I could so they wouldn't overtake me.  Ditched the light about 1/2 way up.  Rolled into No Name Ridge at 21:08, 1:57 behind).  Only a few minutes spent here and I was off to give chase to some runners that had left when I'd arrived.

Back to single-track for the remainder of the race until getting back into Easton and the finish area.  This section contained the first of the "Cardiac Needles", meant to reflect their extremely steep climb/descend nature.  Supposedly 5 in total, 3 between No Name and Thorp Mountain (1 itself), with one after.  Well, there may be 3 official ones, but there were plenty of other steep climbs and descents.   Nonetheless, I managed to find both a climbing and descending gear again for a while.  I'd stopped taking S! Caps overnight once it cooled off and that may have been a mistake, because my quads felt sore but better after taking them and on the gentler downhills I managed to make up some time.  Not particularly speedy, but better.  Got to Mt. Thorp and trudged to the top for my "proof of summit" ticket, got barked at by the ranger's dog that lives at the cabin on the peak (great view), and got my Glenn Tachyiama happy-snaps.  The descent was the worst....my quads were done again and every step was agony.  Finally got to the Thorp Mt aid station at 22:51 (2:20 behind), grabbed some more water and some snacks, and left.

One more needle and a short trip to the next aid station.  Unfortunately, quite a bit was downhill that I could not longer walk, much less run, and I shuffled as fast as I could.  It was getting warm again quickly and I was going thru water just as fast.  Got to French Cabin in under an hour (23:58, 2:07 behind), took a brief seat, grabbed some more quesadillas and headed out for the final climb and the descent back to the final aid station.

This section was a slow blur.  A blur because I was tired and getting hot again and just wanted to be done.  Slow because I was tired and just couldn't run for very long on the descents.  About the only reason I ran it as fast as I did was that I had some runners on my tail the entire time.  They nearly caught me once (the pacer did, the runner was still a ways back), which spurred me on to just accept the pain and run as much as I could.  I'd run anywhere from 10' sections to 1/2 mile, depending on the terrain, but was reduced to shuffling down steeper portions.  Numerous stream crossing were in the stretch, which soaked my feet and reminded me about the blister on my right foot I'd been nursing since early in the race, but I was too far in to worry about much aside from getting done as quick as I could.  Arrived at the Silver Creek aid station at 25:48 (2:35 behind), refilled my empty water bottles and got moving quickly, hearing the volunteers start cheering for another runner coming in.

The final 4-5 miles was just hard.  Mostly flat or rolling, which was nice.  Dirt road (okay) and pavement (ouch).  Definitely hot and definitely smelling the barn.  I tried to run as much as I could until my breathing got out of control or I just ran out of juice, regroup and repeat.  I was really afraid I'd get passed here if I wasn't pushing, and I thought I had the 3rd place female bearing down on me (as it turned out, she was the 4th place woman).  Took what seemed like forever, but I finally hit the outskirts of Easton, made it into town, then across the gravel lot to the Firestation and the finish.  26:30:42, 2:30:42 behind my 24 hr target, enough for 38th place overall. Charlie Crissman, the RD, met me at the finish with my brand new Belt Buckle....way cool.  Gave Dianna a big smelly sweaty hug and stumbled into the shade of the firehouse to sit, soak my feet, get some food and drink, and attempt to recover.

As it turns out, the blister on my foot had long ago popped and was about silver dollar sized.  Amazing it didn't hurt worse on the course, although it made up for that error later.  I crashed pretty quickly and Dianna managed to get me packed off into the car for the trip back to pick up the puppies and for home.  I even managed to sleep in the car for a bit (quite rare for me).

So quite the adventure.  There was a good 70+ miles in the race where I swore I was miserable and would never do something this idiotic ever again.  Of course, I knew at the time that was probably a big lie...I'm already thinking about next year.  It was definitely a new experience for me and quite rewarding (now that its over!)

Congrats Dale! This is an amazing accomplishment, especially considering all you've been through this summer. You are quite the runner. Looking forward to hearing the details. A friend of mine ran in the race, but dropped out after 72 miles because he was falling asleep on his feet. I can't imagine even going a full day without sleep, let alone running the entire time.

Legs are still pretty sore.  Blister is healing nicely.  Ankles have been the worst so far....they intermittently ache, so badly at times that it's woken me up at night for the last couple of nights and prevented solid sleep.  But I feel like I'm finally starting to recover and might feel human again this weekend.

Really enjoyed your report. Makes me wonder about you (yes you are now in the club) crazy 100 mile guys....A part of me is also jealous. Nicely done! Not a bad debut (especially for an injured guy). Get well soon and go break 24 hours!

Come out and run Cascade Crest as practice the month prior and I'll head out and run the Bear with you the next month...

From Cody on Thu, Sep 01, 2011 at 14:39:21 from 67.137.240.196

Sounds completely reasonable.. (rolling my eyes)

How about you just come out and do the bear. Much easier...

From Dale on Thu, Sep 01, 2011 at 14:49:48 from 69.10.215.11

Actually, splitting the difference and running 50 at CCC and 50 at Bear sounds the most reasonable...

Sanity run.  Drove up into the Elbe hills so I could hit the trails without the intervening pavement and gravel roads.  Discovered a new (closer) connector that obviously was just built.  New connector to Snoey to John R to Anvil Loop (East) to Upper Elkspur to new Cougar/Husky to Lower Elkspur, back up Cougar/Husky to Upper Elkspur to Memorial East to the Snoey back to connector and done.  Many of the trails are now in pristine condition.....the back country horsemen obviously did some maintenance in prep for their 100 mile ride a couple of weeks ago.  The Anvil loop I ran on used to be pretty gnarly but they smoothed it out and its pretty sweet now.  The new Cougar/Husky isn't really finished yet, so some of it was not really a trail but some flagging.  Most of the elevation change was on that one.  Came up on a huge elk, about 20' away, rubbing its rack on an old stump.  Got behind a couple of big trees before I made my presence known, but he took off anyway.  May want to consider getting and carrying some pepper spray for the cougars and bears....not sure if they'll run.  Left hip started bugging me towards the end, and the left ankle was bugging me most of the run, but even with those hassles I thoroughly enjoyed this run and the time in the woods.

Addendum:  Unfortunately, my left ankle didn't.  It has decided to swell up to the size of a softball.  Amazing that I could run 100 miles on it without any significant swelling, but a measley 10 miles sends it to the moon.  Guess those compression socks worked.

Got the MRI results today from the doctor....labral tear in my left hip.  Got a steroid shot in the hip capsule (as much fun as it sounds) so that we're sure this is the *real* problem and a follow up with the surgeon for the end of the month.  Despite the findings, I'm estatic that we know what it is and its fixable.  Does that make me crazy?

Hip arthroscopic surgery today.  Labral debridement and synovectomy.  Surgeon told my wife the tissue was so frayed that it wasn't repairable.  Good news is so far I haven't felt any of the pain I was feeling prior to the surgery.  Even better news is that I'm actually able to walk without crutches and the pain isn't too terribly bad.  Best news is that I can finally start doing something again instead of waiting.....PT over the next 6-7 week......hope to come back soon.
