Running Accomplishments:

Pre-high school: I ran a lot of local 5ks and a few half marathons.  I didn't do a ton of training, but I just had fun, and I got more serious about it as high school got closer.

High school: I enjoyed running a lot, especially cross country.  I originally did track to keep my in shape for cross country.  I ran at Footlocker Nationals, the Adidas Dream mile, Brooks PR Invitational, world xc junior championships, and a few local 5ks.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Make sure I have fun, not get burned out, and get faster.

School records in the 5km and 10km.

Personal:

Served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from July 2015-July 2017.  I gained 30 lbs. during the service and came back out of shape; however I knew that if the Lord wanted me to once again run competitively, he would bless me to return to fitness.

I graduated from Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. I currently run for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Race: Bonneville dual meet (3 Miles) 00:15:22, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
Total Distance
6.00

We walked the course for about a mile, and then did about a mile and a half warm up.   We were all psyched for this race because it was the race to see if we would beat Bonneville, mainly to see if we'd have them at region.  Well, they decided to rest their varsity up for region, so it wasn't much of a big race.  Coach said we still should push it.

We went out and I got a good start, and passed Steve about the 200 mark.  At 400 I was at a 1:06-07. A bit faster than I wanted, but I felt amazing.  800-2:20.  2 mile pace.  Not too bad and I still felt good.  No one was pushing me, so I was just by myself from there.  At mile 1 I was at 4:56.  My usuall race pace.  After this I slowed, mostly becuase it went on to the hard part of the course with some sand and big rocks.  I came at the half-way point at 7:40.  I did math in my head way wrong and thought that I was at a 16min+ pace so I spead up for about a quarter mile, but then realized what I did with the math and went back into my race pace.  After this I just kept running.  Mile 2-10:10, so it was slower, but not by too much.  Slower than I wanted it.  I then just kept running it, and I started hurting(which usually happens during the whole race) at the end of the race.  I came across at 15:22.  Not too bad of a race, especially with trainers instead of flats or spikes.  Most of the team did well too.  We had the first 7 spots, so that was good.  Region here we come.

Conner:

Congratulations on the win!

I looked at your mileage chart and have some thoughts about it. 150 or so miles a month is good enough to be competitive in the mile, and beat other guys with comparable talent that run 150 miles a month or less in 2 miles. But to move to the next level the mileage needs to go up. Nothing super crazy, but there is no reason you could not do at least 200-240 miles a month (about 50-60 a week) consistently. This should give you a sub-9:00 3200 fairly soon, but more important make you an animal in the races 10 K or longer. With your speed it is realistic to expect sub-30:00 10,000 on the track at sea level in the next year or so, but you need the aerobic base.

What often happens in high school running is that you cut the mileage before a race to race well, then you run less the next day. With the full racing schedule this sharply cuts into aerobic development. Then you have speed workouts that make you too tired or simply leave no time for aerobic miles.

Some ideas to remedy this is add a regular second run, or run a little bit extra on the day you work out with the team.

Sasha, I am planning on bumping up my mileage in the future, but Thanks for the advice.
