Deseret News 10K -

Goal for the race - PR (sub 34:48)

That is about all I cared about since placing well in this race is pretty tough.  This is by far the biggest 10K of the year in Utah.

The morning was warm (mid to upper 70's at 6 am) especially for a Logan boy.  I sure felt sorry for the marathoners as they were in for a sweat-fest.  I did 2 miles of warmup with a few striders to try and get the body to wake up.  I am not used to getting the leg turnover going and with all the downhill, I sure needed it.

The race started off fine with the big downhill mile flying by.  5:06

The second mile was still downhill. 5:12

By this point, Jon and Adam were still within sight but pulling away.  I focused on working past one runner at a time.  Mile 3 was rolling down, but much harder than 1 or 2 for sure.  5:43

I figure I was roughly 16:20 or so at the 5K (10 seconds ahead of my PR pace of 2007).  Time to buckle down and get to work.

Well, how about maintaining then, since I can't speed up at all.  Blogger Craig passed me in here and I let him get too far away.  Mile 4 was 5:36

Mile 5 was more of the same pain.  What else can you say?  5:45

Mile 6 was on the parade route which was nice to get the cheering section going.  It helped running sandwiched between two female runners.  They sure get lots of cheers.  I felt strong during this mile and made up lots of time on Craig and two female runners I was working off of.  I think I passed 4-5 people this mile.  5:53

The final stretch is long.  In fact, I was so delirious that I was getting mad at the race for putting the 6 mile mark over .2 from the finish.  I was convinced during the race and directly after that it should have been 6.1 miles not 6.2.  Come on, since when is a 10K 6.2?  Those race directors are sure mean to add .1 to my race.  Quite the thought process over the last bit of the race.

I had been working up to Craig the whole last mile and finally caught him with 30 meters left.  He saw me and took off.  I mean, took off.  It wasn't fair.  He rested that whole last mile.  Good race Craig.  1:08

Final Official Time: 34:25 (34:27 clock)  PR by 23 seconds.

Adam ran really well nearly matching his time from last year off of less training.  Jon ran well considering he hasn't been home for 3 weeks.  Sure is tough to train while traveling.  He ran 34:07 I believe.  Scott (redrooster) came in just a few mins back.  I was still panting when he came in.  He ran great considering his injury recovery and ramping back up his miles.

Jon, Adam and I ran back up to the start nice and slow.

Post Edit:  Official results have my chip time as 34:25 and my placing as 51st. (not the 44th as originally stated at finish line (12th in 25-29)

Evidently running won't kill you, but it will make you paranoid and convinced that people are out to get you. Especially nefarious race directors. Or maybe it's the course measurers. Can't be sure...

Nice PR.

Congrats on the PR! Wow, that is a fast race to get that time and still finish 44th!

Great job on the PR. It was nice to meet you today also. So, if you were 44th overall, what was the first place guys time? Sheesh! So, just looked at Desnews and the winner was a woman! Wow EVERYONE got chicked!

NICE RACE!!! We all hear ya on the last .2 (or .1) of the race, that is always the hardest! You did great and I am glad you enjoyed your time sandwiched between to obviously awesome female runners!

From Craig on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 15:28:14 from 63.167.171.20

Good race. I don't think I would have kicked it if you didn't pass me at the end, but I thought I would give it a shot.

From jeffc on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 16:05:55 from 167.207.128.101

Dude, you were a bit delerious at the end with those thoughts, LOL! Great race and time and congratulations on the PR.

From paul on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 17:46:56 from 76.27.122.123

Great job. Were temps similar to 2007?

From Cody on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 18:57:24 from 71.219.81.42

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I feel much better now after a nap. Mmmm Nap...

Paul - I would say it was just as warm. Less humid though. I was a sweat ball the whole way. Overall, very similar.

From paul on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 19:00:37 from 76.27.122.123

Cool. Are you in SLC all weekend? I'll be doing some sort of run tomorrow morning if you are interested. I can promise to stay off of the downhills...

From Superfly on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 23:01:23 from 208.117.127.110

Nice splits and way to kick your goal's butt.

From Dustin on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 11:48:10 from 76.23.28.137

Great job, way to battle until the end. I used to think 5K were hard because you had to run fast the entire time, now 10K's are starting to feel that way.

From Jon on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 15:02:09 from 75.169.150.167

Nice job, Cody. Glad you fessed up to your 6.1 vs 6.2 gaffe... it was sure funny yesterday, though it confused me a bit cause I didn't think you were serious at first.

Oh, for future references, the TOU 1/2 will have .1 mile after the last mile marker, and TOU will have .2 miles. FYI.

From Adam RW on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 16:44:22 from 155.101.152.103

Cody, Great race and congrats on the PR. Also, thanks for dragging me out this morning. Looking forward to seeing you continue this awesome running streak.

From Dave S on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 21:12:44 from 4.254.226.50

Cody, Nice job getting a pr! If it makes you feel any better I put down 6.1 on my race report. See you at the biathlon.
