This morning I attacked the TM with a vengence. Ok, not really. I wanted to see if by laying off running for a few days, my leg would magically get better. It was looking good (between 8:30 to 7:30 pace) through 2 miles (a 0 on my pain scale) when by 2.5 my hammy had tightened up enough to pull on my knee. The pain creeped up to a 5 and I started to walk. It immediately felt better walking so after 1/4 mile walking, I tried again. In a 1/4 mile of running, it hurt again so I walked some more. I attempted it one final time but at 6mph to see if that helped. It did, as the pain stayed low (2-3). I feel I can run though the pain as it isn't that bad, but I am worried that I am making it worse by running through it.

Well, round two with the TM and I was KO'd.  I did an experiment and messed around with the speeds.  Everywhere from 5 to 11mph.  The 11mph actually felt the best, but it was probably because at that speed, I am barely touching the ground.  All the effort goes into forward motion.  Unfortunately, after 1.5 miles (averaging 8 min pace overall), the pain was about a 5.  I continued to see what would happen and lo and behold, it got worse.  Imagine that.  By the time 2 miles came around I was grimacing (8-9 on the pain).

Yep, I'm done.  No running now until I can get this resolved.  Either a doctor, or major time off.  Not sure if the doc is worth it.  Pay a bunch of money for tests and have him tell me, yep you have ITBS, stop running for X amount of time then come back and see me.  Stupid leg.....  The only silver lining is that walking gives me no pain.  Looks like I will be walking until Christmas.

How frustrating! So sorry you have to deal with this injury.

From Dustin on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 12:40:12

Sorry to hear you are dealing with an injury. I've been dealing with the same hip pain that was hurting before and during the marathon. I've been to the chiropractor a few times and I think things are getting back to normal. The pain is finally starting to go away and hopefully I can get back to training. It is frustrating when you can't train like you want to.

Thanks for the support guys!

No offense to ortho and sports doctors, but IMO a good massage therapist is worth more for the money than a doc. Most docs in this situation will tell you what you already know, give you exercises you can find on the internet or this blog, and then bill your insurance a billion dollars. PT might be worth it, since they can usually diagnose EXACTLY the source of the problem. But I got frustrated with the PT's at IHC, when they started charging my insurance $40 for a hot pack and were more interested in watching Sports Center than paying attention to my time there. I ended up quiting there and just doing the exercises on my own, in the gym and at home. As runners, we usually have the discipline and training habits of doing all the PT exercises on our own.

You are probably right, at least for my case where it is pretty obvious what is the problem. I am sure specialty docs are useful in figuring out difficult cases. Time to buckle down and spend extra time doing additional stretches and exercises.

Cody --

When I had ITBS a year ago I shut it down for about six weeks, got a few massages and spent most of my time stretching and doing a few other exercises, what Paul mentions above. I tried to rush into a run a few times and felt exactly like what you're describing. After I finally gave myself enough rest I came back, and it hasn't been a problem since.

That is good to see some encouraging comments! I am so sorry you are struggling with this. But I would love for you to help me focus on improving and pace me at the turkey trot. Silver lining for selfish me...

I hope things get better soon Cody. Just don't give up. This may be a blessing in disguise. You may come back even stronger next season. Just don't push things.

Although Im not in the same category of runner as you, I have similiar problems. I thought I resolved it, but it seems to be coming back so I guess I need to rest more too and concentrate on the treatments more such as the ones mentioned in your ITB discussion forum

Cody, sorry to hear you can't run. I totally forgot that that was something you liked to do in addition to playing racquetball with me everyday at 5 in the morning. The only running I get in is when the elevator door at school is closing and I'm late to class

Haven't played racquetball since I tagged a friend in the back when he was really upset about losing
