Lotoja is a lot of fun, but it's an overrated logistical nightmare. And (relatively speaking) it's not that hard. If it's a long race you want (rather than a chance to ride the in local race), there are other options.
The Everest Challenge is usually 2 weeks after Lotoja. It's a different beast altogether, but it's pretty low-key and you're essentially guaranteed a spot. Of course, you have to travel to Bishop (one of the happiest places on earth, FYI), so it's not at all local.
If there are still spots available, you might also check out the Park City Point to Point, which also takes place in September. That was my first (and so far only) foray into MTB racing, and it pretty much kicked my butt. Great route, though.
The Tour de Park City is another great option, but it's in the middle of the summer and probably interferes with your running.

Sorry about Lotoja, man. I know you had been looking forward to it.

Thanks for the tips F.G. I will have to check out those races and decide what to do now. You have been doing a lot of vert lately. Getting ready to kick my butt again? Whats next for you?
