VO2 max - 8 mi w/ 3 x 1,600 m @ 5K race pace; jog 50 to 90% interval time between.

6:35 am, 48°, 92% humidity, winds calm, overcast most of the time - perfect weather for a track workout.

Slept in and then went to the high school track for the workout. There was some guy walking on the track when I got there and he was still there when I left. I talked to him a bit some of the times that I lapped him. He made some comment about my lapping him and that's why I look good and he doesn't. But it wasn't very hard to lap him since he was walking the whole time.

It was overcast while I was running on the track and just as I left the track, the sun came out from behind the clouds.

I didn't do any caulking or caulk removal last night. Maybe tonight.

AP: 8:49. Splits on the way to the track: 10:22, 9:48, 0.39 @ 9:39.
Time on the 1600 m intervals (with pace on rest interval in parentheses): 7:31 (9:53), 7:19 (9:51), 7:19.

It's on June 5. A week and a half away.

Nice pace on those miles!

Great running, Carolyn!

Nice workout on those intervals - 1600M is a hard interval to push for a vO2 max!

That'll loosen up those hammies!

Good work Carolyn! A week and a half to go!! awesome. The main thing now is focusing on staying healthy and not going stir-crazy from the taper!

I am curious, are your splits from your garmin or the using the track?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:21:54 from 24.8.167.243

Bonnie, the splits on the 1600s are from the track, but I used the Garmin for timing. I turned off auto lap and hit the lap button whenever I crossed my starting point after 4 laps. So the time I've given is what the Garmin said because it was my stop watch, but the distance that the Garmin said was actually 1.03 miles (so the Garmin gives me a faster pace than what I've reported), but I'm calling it 1600 meters. The other paces (splits before and after and pace on the rest intervals) are from the Garmin.

Funny new blog title!

From Bonnie on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:34:51 from 64.119.33.134

interesting about the garmin reading ... it is probably because of the turns on the track ... that your garmin can't read the distance accurately (interesting to a statistician - my whole life is about measurement error ;-)).

From KP on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:43:51 from 65.208.22.26

oh bonnie, i love your nerdiness. i was just thinking that the track was a smidge long. you've got to be all scientific about it!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:48:06 from 24.8.167.243

I think the Garmin likes to measure long. It says that almost every race I run is longer than it is supposed to be. That means I'm probably actually running less than I think I am, since I go by the Garmin. Oh well.

From Bonnie on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 14:59:50 from 64.119.33.134

ha ha ha KP -- I am definitely a nerd, and the track is the one true gold standard when it comes to distances. There are many many calculations that can induce error in Garmin measurement (including averaging pace over several very short distances).

C in C - I wouldn't say the Garmin always measures long -- I am pretty sure that on average (over the course of a week or month of training) your measured distances are pretty close to reality. Much closer than mine are for sure. That said, I just don't think it makes one lick of difference how many "exact" miles or "exact" pace was. You train what you train and you race what you race. You have a solid phase of training under you and have a good race to test your metal!! Most importantly, over the next 1.5 weeks, you have to take it extra careful to sleep, eat healthy and think positive!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 15:26:24 from 24.8.167.243

Thanks, Bonnie.

I am getting more sleep. And my thoughts aren't too negative, at least not yet. I resolved this morning during my run to do better on the eating.

From Michelle on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 10:04:38 from 97.118.36.161

Great run, it has been perfect running weather in the morning lately. If the wind would just die down we could have some nice days also. I am excited you are getting more sleep and tapering a bit. You are going to do awesome in your race!
