I have become the queen of lazy these days. I am having a hard time getting myself up and out the door in the morning. It's hard to be motivated when I don't have to get kids of to school and I only have 5 miles to run.

Yesterday my 18-year-old son came to me and said that he had decided to start running because he wants to get in shape. He wanted me to buy him some cheap running shoes and tell him a 2-mile route. So I took him to Target and got him some cheap running shoes and some shorts. I told him that I'll buy him better gear after he has proven that he's going to stick with it. I sent him out on the 2-mile route and told him to walk if he needed to. I didn't keep track of how long he was gone. When he came back he said that he had walked about 1/3 of it and he also said that he had new-found respect for me. I don't think it's just my example that has convinced him to start running. His new girlfriend is a runner. I think I won't say anything to him about it today. He's got a gig today with his band and has to work this evening anyway. But I think tomorrow I'll encourage him to go out and run again.

That's pretty cool...hopefully he sticks with it (or something else) to maintain his health! I also think you're doing the right thing by not making a big deal of it. If he takes to it, great. If not, you really can't force him.

that is wonderful news about your son! hopefully he'll stick with it. maybe this new girl will be a good influence on him.

Cool about the kid. You're smart to get him started with less expensive stuff until you see if he's serious or not.

I've never pushed SnoFlake because I figured the motivation must come from within. She's so busy with her equestrian stuff now that she has dropped running, but I believe she'll come back to it someday. I think you're taking the right direction with your son.

Cool about your son. Good call on the no pressure approach. Its getting pretty hot in the mornings, eh?

Good news that he is trying out running. I think I run because my dad has always ran. My whole life he has ran to stay in shape and be fit. He has never ran a marathon or a half but I remember going to lots of 10Ks and I did my first 5K with my dad by my side. Just being the example will help your kids want to be fit and active. An added bonus is that they see how hard running a long distance really can be!

Leading by example...it's always best.

Teens will do more for a girlfriend/boyfriend than they'll do for a parent. But if he catches the "bug" it should always be with him.

Your tapering is coming along nicely. Are you missing long runs yet?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, May 27, 2010 at 14:30:13 from 198.241.217.15

I'm actually happy to have shorter runs, QP. The long weekday runs were kind of daunting. I've got 13 this Saturday, and that's plenty long for me right now.

Cool! Both that he has a new respect for what you do and that he has a sweetie who is a runner. Enjoy the Queen of Lazy situation!
