Long run.

10:24 am, 38-46°F, 84-66% humidity, winds 7 NNW, very overcast with mist to begin, light rain for a few minutes around mile 8, and then partly cloudy with some sun by the end.

Thus ends week 1 of mesocycle 3. I really wanted to do 13 miles yesterday so that I would have 70 for the week with my scheduled 18 today, but I didn't manage it. I thought about going out yesterday afternoon for the 3.36 that I missed, but I took a nap instead. So I added the 3.36 to today's run. I was supposed to have 70 miles last week and didn't make it, so I wanted to get 70 miles this week. Also, I missed a scheduled 20 miler back in March on the day that I ran the Canyonlands Half Marathon, so I thought it would be nice to get another 20+ miler done.

However, I bailed on Michelle this morning. I was supposed to meet her at her house at 7:30 as long as it wasn't raining or snowing. I got up at 6:30 and it was cold, in the low 30s, and it didn't look like it was raining too much, but I did see a person out walking a dog carrying an umbrella (the person was carrying the umbrella, not the dog). I really didn't want to be cold and wet for 3 1/2 hours, so I went back to bed and figured I'd run later when the weather was a little better. I didn't call Michelle because I thought she would still be asleep. I was going to call her at about 7:15, but I fell asleep. She called me at 7:40 wondering where I was. So I wasn't a very good friend this morning. I didn't really have great weather when I started out, but it got better by the end of my run.

I decided to circumnavigate Highlands Ranch today instead of running a shortly loop repeatedly. I passed 3 different high schools and 4 Walgreen's one of them twice, on this run. I kind of combined three different routes that I normally do, which meant that in addition to have the hills at the beginning that I often have, I had the hills going up Highlands Ranch parkway in the 2nd half, not quite at the end. I'm glad to finally be done.

Whew! Nice miles! What do you carry with you?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 17:36:35 from 24.8.167.243

I always carry my cell phone with me. I also carried my fuel belt today. It has 4 separate small bottles - 3 had water, 1 had Powerade. It also has a little pouch in which I had sport beans. I had 3 sport beans on two different occasions during this run. I also had my mp3 player today. That's it for what I carried with me.

Nice miles and pace for a long run to hit 70! Your dedication (and sleep) will pay off :) Sounds like a good, nearly uneventful run - which you being 'on-call-mom' is a good thing!

From CookieLegs on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 19:26:49 from 71.36.87.104

Wow - what a nice long run to cap off a super high mileage week for you!! How big are "sports beans"? Are they the same size as jelly beans? Do you get enough energy and nutrition from having just 3 beans? Or do they also help replace electrolytes? (Sorry for all the questions!! After that long run you probably feel like relaxing and nothing else, but I bet you have lots of things left to do today!

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 20:11:33 from 71.219.75.178

Nice job on the 70 miles!!!! How are you feeling with the high miles?

From JD on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 20:12:48 from 166.128.122.12

Great long run! I'm curious about the beans too. I just carried water today, I haven't found a good fuel source to run with. I used GU last year, but it didn't seem to help much.

You're looking super strong for whatever races come your way!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 20:23:47 from 24.8.167.243

The sport beans are about the same size as jelly beans. In fact, I think they're made by Jelly Belly. I'm not sure whether they help, but maybe they do. They are supposed to give you carbs (probably just sugar), electrolytes, and vitamins B & C (that's what it says on the package).

I feel like I've been hit by a truck and I'd like to crawl into bed, but my family doesn't feel sorry for me because I bring this upon myself. I've been running errands and dealing with needy people all afternoon and now I've got to go to the musical at the high school.

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 20:43:24 from 71.219.75.178

SOme of them have caffeine in them and they do help, but I eat the bag not just 3!!! You have good self control.

They are made by Jelly Belly, same size. And very good!!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 20:54:46 from 24.8.167.243

I don't use the caffeine ones. I think I would have a hard time getting a whole bag down at one time. I struggle to chew and swallow 3 at a time.

From JD on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 21:00:09 from 166.128.122.12

What about s-caps. What is the purpose of those. Have you ever tried them?

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 21:12:31 from 71.219.75.178

True, I have only ever eaten the beans when I am in a stopped position---before a run or smack dab in the middle.

My husband takes S-caps because they are supposed to help with cramping. They are juts another of many electrolyte supplements out there.

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 21:13:01 from 71.219.75.178

GEESH----I sound like little miss know it all. SORRY!!! I know nothing, I just TRY everything!!!

From JD on Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 21:17:44 from 166.128.122.12

You know more than I do. I'll just have to do some experimentation the next couple of weeks. I cramp up a bit too on longer runs and I'm wondering if it's just something I have to live with or if a simple jelly bean, or s-cap or whatever will do the trick.

From april27 on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 01:07:47 from 99.188.251.180

wow that is some great mileage!

From Bonnie on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 16:45:36 from 64.119.33.134

Congrats on your 70 miles!

That is a lot of stuff to carry, I carry a watch ;-) - sometimes a gel - of course, that is why I get dehydrated and sick sometimes during my summer runs until I get used to the heat. I would likely choke on a jelly bean ... I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time! You are quite the juggler!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 16:49:33 from 24.8.167.243

I usually chew the jelly beans while I run, but yesterday I was tired, and so I stopped and stood still the two times that I ate jelly beans. I'm not loving the jelly beans. I think I might switch to gels. The chewing is kind of tough.

From Burt on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 20:03:44 from 98.177.220.145

Nice miles, mile high lady.

From Smooth on Sun, Apr 25, 2010 at 22:26:22 from 174.23.172.155

AWESOME long run! Congrats on 70 miles week. You're entering the race preparation cycle. So smart to incorporate hills in your long run and practice fuel and fluids. Are there hills in your upcoming marathon? I wish I had run more hills this last training cycle.

I have a hard time chewing too. I like powerbar gel with its thin consistency, can almost drink it. Gu is so thick especially during cold weather.

GREAT training week!

From Kelli on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 00:54:36 from 71.219.75.178

JD, I would try the S-caps. I know several people who say they work wonders.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 07:18:34 from 24.8.167.243

Smooth, actually the race I am preparing for is flat and at sea level. I just really don't have any choice but to run hills around here. I'm a little nervous about a flat course. I wish I had more flat to run on to prepare for it.

From Michelle on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 10:01:35 from 174.29.71.105

Great job with your miles this week! I am impressed with 70 miles. I hope your tough run today goes well!

From auntieem on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 10:55:38 from 24.18.77.246

Carolyn, I don't think you have to worry about training on hills to run flat; the other way 'round, then you should worry. You are doing so well! I am not running Newport because of the long layoff that I had, but I'm tempted to drive on down anyway to see you and sno run!

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 12:09:21 from 207.225.192.66

Wow! Great run! Congrats on the big milage week!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 at 12:55:53 from 24.8.167.243

Auntieem,

I'm just worried about the monotony and the repetitive use of the same muscles without variation of a flat run.

I'd really love to meet you, so if it's not too much trouble, please come to the Newport marathon to meet up with me and Sno.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Apr 27, 2010 at 09:37:21 from 24.199.205.252

Wow! Congratulations on a nice run, with hills, at good paces. And congratulations on making your 70 mile mark.

I find the gu/hammer gel stuff is more effective than the beans. If it's thick, squish it around in your hand for a while and it won't be so bad.

You're so awesome! Great job.

From Mark on Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 23:42:43 from 173.168.88.68

What an awesome long run at the end of some pretty big miles.

I usually like to make my dog carry the umbrella, but he's not very good at it.
